"A stunning looking platformer that puts a twist on the golf genre"
–As We Play
"Joon Shining has some of that [Nights Into Dreams] texture in it: the echo of kids who cry out for a softer world and green-velvet grass with nostalgic checkerboards. Crayon paintings of trees and flowers and the strange abstract creatures that call them home. The silence and sound of the wind passing through, never the same as before, a gentle stranger making an invisible path through all of it"

"It looks pretty majestic...It’s hard to imagine a golf game looking this beautiful but Joon Shining is going to challenge everything I thought was true"

“If you're up for a challenging new spin on a classic game, Joon Shining is the physics-based 2D-platforming golf-like game for you!”
–NerdLovesGeek
“It really shines through, the idea of taking a very simple mechanic and getting as much fun out of that mechanic as possible…It’s essentially like a golf game…then they add to that brilliant effects and magic…it’s easy to play difficult to master”
–Raccoon Media Cafe
“You’re now trying to navigate a weird magical obstacle course. Even the way you control the ball is different…you can stop or accelerate your ball mid-air, and you can magically control some of the obstacles, making the environment interactive. Joon Shining feels like a golf game, just not like any other golf game I’ve ever played.”
“Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad.” – AA Milne
Mage Drops combines elements of traditional golf and minigolf with puzzle platforming and a twist of fantasy and enchantment! Putting a fun twist on the basic premise of golf with an interactive game environment, magical abilities and a variety of worlds to explore. It uses its simple styling and serene audio to give an almost relaxing feel to a pretty tough game. It is an interesting mix of golf and platformer mechanics with a magical mix of obstacles that are ultimately satisfying to overcome. It provides players with a number of ways to challenge themselves but its difficulty is understated and speed and precision will be required to progress in the game and reach the final courses. Whilst I personally struggled to get very far, this could be a winner for skilful fans of precision-platformers or anyone who likes to really test themself!
I got this game to try it out after hearing about it from a stream that I often watch. I can say that this game is really really fun, I love all the mechanics of the game and how you can control the golf ball that has been produced by the wizard and manipulate the environment around you. The game is really well done overall and the platforming aspect of the game is challenging for anyone who loves platforming, however I want to put some of my own feedback down below. - So, this is my first bit of feedback because I think it may be potentially important to the growth of the game, when I started the game on controller I ran into a bit of a graphical glitch. I am a controller player, so I am pleased that the game does fully support controller, but the new game option completely covered any of the other options that I was able to choose from. This could be due to me having OBS open at the time since I was getting ready to stream this game at the time, but I do think it is something worth looking into. I currently have not seen the issue since, so I don't know if this was caused by OBS. - I believe the start menu in the game could be expanded on, right now there's only the option of new game and continue if you already have a save made from playing it before. It would be nice if players had the option to go through an options menu for the game or even close the client of the game from the start menu. I would like to note that the game does have an options menu and quit game option, but this is only accessible when you are already in the game. I think these menus should be accessible straight from the start screen and not only when the player is already in the game. - The camera could work a little better when the golf ball is being obscured by a tree, one of the first levels in stage one had a tree and I couldn't really make out where I was positioned too well. I don't know if that is intentional to add a challenge for the player, but I think maybe an option to tilt the camera a little so the player can 'peek' at their position would be nice. - The last comment I would like to make is that I wish there was more bgm (background music) in the game. There is a music option, but it really just lowers a soft sounds that are suppose to represent music in the game. It's not something that was a deal breaker for me, since I lowered the music volume after a little and just played a nice selection of lo-fi from the twitch music application as I played. But I think it could be something that would bring appeal to the stages as players go through the levels. Overall, this game is really really fun which is why I still recommend it even with my above comments. It could use a bit of work, but it's very challenging and rewarding when a player finally manages to get through all of the obstacles placed in their way. I have not ran into any major bugs that kept me from enjoying the game or any errors, just small quality of life updates that could bring more convenience to the player or draw them in more.

Joon Shining is a golf-inspired puzzle game with emphasis on precision and platforming to reach the goal. This review is written after having completed the qualifier (tutorial) level and some of the main levels.
Gameplay
The titular Joon takes the role of the player character, who must use his magical powers to direct dodo eggs into their nests to avoid their extinction. The player has access to various objects in the world to help or hinder their progress, and can also apply magic to slow/stop the balls progress or continue rolling to achieve a better shooting position Off the bat I’ll say the tutorial is pretty bare bones at this point, introducing you to the tools/concepts but not really providing any idea how they will come into play. Self explanatory ones like camera movement and adjusting shooting angle are fine, but when dealing with manipulating objects it can be a little hard to decipher. I can definitely see an argument for this being part of the puzzle, however for an introduction to the game I feel there’s no harm in laying things out for the player. It’s also worth noting that once past the tutorial and into the levels proper, certain things you have already come to learn about now take on whole new functions with no warning (the bubbles you used to bounce around now suddenly act like donkey kong cannons shooting you in a pointed direction) or obstacles and enemies that will now harm you. Again this can be viewed as part of the puzzle, but explanations don’t hurt. The gameplay itself does feel good once you get into the rhythm and understand how the ball moves through the level, however as noted by some others it can tend to not follow the arc line which means for highly precise shots like threading the ball into a pipe become much harder and not in a fun way. The inclusion of spells to allow you to get the perfect tee off spot or land on smaller platforms does work quite well and adds much needed player control into the gameplay, so definitely a big plus for that.
Art/Music
The art is again a bit bare bones unfortunately. While level design definitely fits the function it needs to in order to provide challenging shots and tricky puzzles, it feels like the levels were made and then decorated to look filled up. Some shapes and areas look like generic shapes that have been coloured to blend but don’t appear to serve any form or function, which I feel could be removed to give a cleaner look or make way for more unique assets In terms of colour and lighting, A+ all round. It’s easy to see what you’re looking at and things don’t look monotone and boring. I’m personally not a fan of the checker pattern on grass seen in these sorts of games, but that’s more a personal gripe than anything. Art style and textures blend well together, at no point was there ever an asset that made me say “wait why is that there” which is a hard thing to do so kudos for that. Music and sound meshes well but can be a little bit overbearing, such as the wave sound whenever you drop the ball in the drink, but it doesn’t kill the experience in my opinion.
Issues
No game is without these and for a game this early in production it should not be taken as anything other than feedback: Menu’s need work: The main menu only has two options, both of which start the game and nothing else. I would recommend adding in access to the options menu and a quit to desktop button in future builds as it can be annoying having to start the game to exit the game. The pause menu faces issues in which the mouse doesn’t seem to show correctly, and when clicking restart level the game will be stuck until the menu is opened and closed again. I’m aware holding R restarts the level but I didn’t find this out until the very end of the tutorial meaning I faced this issue up until that point. Camera is restrictive: Being locked to one view and having to move the camera away to see the shot then go back and try and line it up is challenging for the wrong reasons. I would suggest have the camera set dynamically so that depending on the range of your shot, the camera moves in and out to capture the intended path (zoom for tight chip shots, pan out for long shots) Ball arc: as mentioned in other reviews, the ball does not follow the arc meaning precision is compromised as a result. A review of this is very much needed, but i imagine already on the list so I won’t harp too much
Result
In its current state it is exactly what is advertised. A golf-inspired puzzle game with emphasis on precision and platforming to reach the goal that is in early access. I personally don’t think it is worth its current price point at this stage of development, however I can definitely see there is a solid game on the way that will emerge as it is built upon. I’m definitely looking forward to future updates and seeing how things progress.
This is a very unique platformer! Somewhere in between golf and chill tricky platforming, I found the accessibility options super helpful as some days I just want to vibe with some puzzles and not focus on points. The courses are fun to discover, especially because they don't reveal the entire course to you at once so you are able to take it one jump at a time. There are neat ways this game plays with physics, like sticky walls or bouncy platforms controlled by you, to make your way to the end. Once you make it through a challenge and get to see the next one, the rush of excitement and also confusion is real. Like many puzzle platformers the reward is in the overcoming of the challenge but you do need some patience as missing a checkpoint (which also aren't that easy to get to) sends you all the way to the beginning of the course! I'm also pleased to report that the game didn't make me ill (I unfortunately experience motion sickness with some games, but not this one).
I believe that this game used to be named "Mage Drops" earlier in its development but as of now it's named "Joon Shining". Joon Shining is a precision-based platformer that uses golf in its gameplay. Since this game is in early access at this time, I'll be lenient in giving it a positive review because it's fun. However, you should consider this review to be more mixed than positive and I'll be describing some issues that made me feel frustrated at times.
Gameplay
I mentioned that this game is a precision platformer that uses golf mechanics to play. An example that I can think of would be the Golfing Over It game that parodied the infamous Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. Joon Shining plays similarly to that game except more fair and reliant on gold rules. The game is very challenging since golf and precision platformer are two worlds of pain brought into one. So if you don't like either then the gameplay isn't for you. Onto the gameplay itself, it plays from a 2D perspective like the old Super Mario games. You can aim the ball up, down, left, and right in an arc because gravity exists. A great mechanic that I found interesting is the ability to brake or make the ball roll slowly forward mid-stroke. This makes the game more of a platformer and leads to amazing plays. The goal is to obviously score in the hole at the end of each level. I think the level design is pretty fun, albeit frustrating to try to play under par at first. You could bounce on bubbles, cling onto sticky slime, travel across the air, etc. There are obstacles and tools in each level to make the game interesting. For obstacles, it comes in the form of enemies that litter the area or spiky hazards. You have three hearts and coming into a deadly hazard will take away one heart at a time. Losing all three hearts will cause you to spawn all the way at the start of the level while keeping your strokes.
Art & Sound
I'll be honest, the art style just reminds me of Playdough, or rather clay art in general. It has that extremely colorful and smooth while being a bit bland. I think the mage looks great and cool. I love seeing the trail that they make when in the level select. The sound is decent. Ambient sounds are great and the music is okay in its serenity. I'll say that the sound effects do get annoying fast but to each their own.
Issues
Since the game is in Early Access, I'll give some feedback that could be taken into consideration. 1) Game-breaking bugs: I know that not all games can come bug-free. Hell, even some bugs can make the game more fun but players really don't like bugs that can ruin the game. I experienced a bug in the forest area that requires you to set your ball on fire to pass through a wall of shrubs. The ball just wouldn't get set on fire and I know you're supposed to do it because I saw a guy named Batprince play through the level. This meant that I could not progress through the game anymore. UPDATE: I don't know what caused it but I fixed it by closing and reopening the game. 2) Arc seems to not be accurate: I've been noticing that some times, the ball arches down a bit under than what was projected. It's not as bad as the first issue but it's bad if you're going for precision. UPDATE: So the ball does go way under than what the arc actually shows which means that it will be annoying to adjust to. 3) Camera makes it hard to aim: It's hard to tell whether or not an object in the background will affect your stroke or not. I was wondering why my ball kept going up so short until I realized that the shrubs were slowing it down. It's also annoying to have to keep holding the camera while adjusting your shot, so why can't it be a toggle like with the free camera.
Verdict
I'll say that if you enjoy golf and platforming together then you should consider this game. As far as gameplay goes, it's pretty fun though I'm not an avid player of golf. However, you should be mindful that the game is still in Early Access and you might experience bugs.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Joon Shining full release is finally out! If you played it as Mage Drops, you need to go back and give it another go - all 8 worlds available, better graphics, tons more polish, new soundtrack, even has a story now! Really cool golf / puzzle platform hybrid. Joon Shining might have a golf theme but it's more of a puzzle platformer. Lovely art & matching soundtrack, 8 huge worlds (tons of levels!) and dynamic controls and obstacles make for a fun game.
