Had the game in my library for a week when I finally got around to playing it, and there was a nice patch waiting that seemingly fixed up a lot of issues people have been having as I have had very few. One time I got stuck in that mall area where you consecutively fight the Cinnabon, Orange Julius, and Icee stands (of course minus the brands) and had to restart the level, but that was about it. So yeah, I think this is a good one. Not the biggest Kevin Smith fan but I do like the first few movies, and that's where 95% of this game's references come from. It's actually a little risqué with the cursing, constant weed references, sex jokes, fat jokes, gay jokes, and other stuff that should be in a game largely based on Clerks and Mallrats. Love the animation, too. Everything is a rubbery, overstuffed, overexaggerated parody where the bellies and the boobs and the balls slump and jiggle as they should. Also a fun Gen Z parody as every kid enemy slowly lumbers forward like a zombie with faces in phones at all times. It's also a good game just as a pure beat 'em up beyond the theme and humor. Jay and Silent Bob work as a tag team where you should not only tag each other in as the lead character when your health is getting low, but also to build up each character's special powers and have them ready to go for boss or mini-boss fights. You can also revive the other if they lose all health, further making it imperative you swap characters often. As you'd expect, Jay is the quicker character with the lighter attack damage and Bob the opposite, but the difference between the two isn't huge. Jay's combo power is the tornado/hurricane spinning kick ala Street Fighter series (among several other Street Fighter references) and Bob's is similar to Mayor Mike Haggar's spinning fists. Great call on that one. Too bad this game started out shakily as it has everything needed for a good beat 'em up: quality combat, nice art and animation, and a sense of style all its own. Bland music is the only disappointment. Any Snackpack or Lunchbox who likes early Kevin Smith or beat 'em ups should find plenty to like here.
They fixed it! The latest patch has made the game way more fun. No more stun locking and the hit box adjustments have made combat feel much better. It's now the Jay and Silent Bob beat'em up we deserve! There are still some things hope they fix like adding more checkpoints and making cut scenes skippable especially if you're restarting a level. But overall I'd say it's now well worth your time.
So. I'm a backer. Cheapest tier so that means I bought this game for $15. Aside from development hell I'd say this is worth at MOST $15. The art style is the best thing this game has going for it. Hit boxes are at times very weird. Some enemies can stun lock you to death which doesn't make for a good time. Certain mechanics that we assume exist in beat-em ups are just not there. 0 i-frames. Some enemies just do not get stunned. And for whatever reason if the game enters a "cut scene" moment during a level, if you happen to be holding a direction before or during that scene, once gameplay resumes you have to press the direction again in order to register you were trying to move. There's just a lot of weird developer choices that went into this preventing it from being a decent beat-em up. 6/10. Ok if you're a fan of the Viewaskewiverse but couldn't really recommend past that one and only point.
Played it day 1 and after the first patch which fixed most of the issues. The game originally felt horrible but now feels alright though even after coming back I dont wish to play it anymore its just not fun. Everything feels like low effort low quality crap from the movement and combat to the music. As a fan of Jay and Silent Bob I am disappointed.
Original backer here. I played the game about 5 hours on the PS5 until the end boss and just now the first level on Steam Deck. Let me start by saying, all the negative comments are very true and legit. Without repeating them, let me focus on the positiv aspects: - After over 10 years they finished the game! (I totally gave up on ever seeing it.) Mad respect for sticking to it and pulling it through. - It is a pure labour of love, made on very little time and a narrow budget. - Artstyle - Jay & Silent Bob feeling (but what a pitty, there isn't more spoken dialog) And more on the technical side: - 10/10 for the level design. Every level has a quirk, making it special. It never get's repetative or boring. Quality over quantity - no filler. - The difficulty is well balanced. There is a constant learning curve, that forces you to learn at least the most important combos. For the last levels, you need to master them. - Sadly, it doesn't guide the player well through the combos or the differences in Jay and Bobs playstyle. Without reading some online resources, I would still be stuck in the 4th level. - It's also nice, that depending on the enemy, some combos work better or not at all. There is no best combo for everything. However, having a lot of shortcomings and not reaching it's potential a side, it accomplishes the only metric that matters: IT'S FUN! Therefore, with a good portion of goodwill, I recommend the game to Brawler and Jay and Silent Bob fans. PS to the devs: Please create an easy mode, with save points directly before the bosses. Don't adjust any health or other difficulty settings - they are just the right amount of challenging. Just more save points and much more information on how to use combos.
This game has the quickest time to beating up children and babies of any game I’ve ever played! What else can you ask for
A solid, goofy beat ’em up with a ton of personality. If you’re into Jay and Silent Bob, this game pretty much knows exactly what it’s doing and commits to the bit 100%. The combat is simple but fun, the humor lands more often than not, and it has that old-school arcade vibe that makes it easy to jump in for a few rounds and just smash things. It’s not trying to be super deep or reinvent the genre, and that’s fine. It’s the kind of game where the charm, the jokes, and the co-op chaos carry the whole thing. For fans of the duo or anyone looking for a funny brawler, this one’s a good time.
Ran like trash on the deck. Deal breaker
Frame skips so badly on deck that it's unplayable. Failing to optimize for the deck is a terrible mistake. I can't even speak to the gameplay, but other reviews have covered that well enough.
brings me back to the good old days
