like the game so far, playing for my youtube channel, going to leave a full review when i beat it, but can someone tell me how to make this full screen on steam? i cant even figure it out with borderless gaming. its showing up basically as a 1080p screen size, when i have a 1440p monitor
Solid retro platformer for the price. Movement feels good and responsive. A few cheap deaths at times. And the music kinda slaps ngl XD
Yeah this game is way too clunky for me to play. Alex Kidd was clunky too but they manage to make it work by balancing the boss fights. This one also has some sort of difficulty spike, which I dont mind but I dont think its casual friendly either. I hate how the bosses are able to move perfectly well when your own character can barely move properly. I would suggest just skipping this, I gave up on the 2nd boss fight and never really like how I have to be lucky to get what I need in order to damage the boss, along with attacks thats really difficult to dodge due to clunky controls. Not worth it imo.
JACK ’N’ HAT is a retro-inspired 2D platformer developed by Cross Game Studio and published by 2Awesome Studio, designed as a modern tribute to the colorful side-scrolling adventures that defined the 16-bit era. With bright pixel art, straightforward mechanics, and an emphasis on exploration and collectibles, the game captures the spirit of classic platformers while adapting the formula for contemporary players. Rather than focusing on complex systems or narrative depth, the experience centers on tight level design, playful environments, and the simple joy of jumping through vibrant worlds while collecting hidden treasures. The story follows Jack, an unlikely hero whose quiet life is interrupted when the peaceful kingdom of Ririland falls into chaos. The villainous scientist Dr. Voo Doom has kidnapped Princess Riri and sparked conflict across the land, threatening the stability of the entire kingdom. Jack, originally just a repairman, becomes the unlikely savior of the realm after receiving a powerful tool from the brilliant scientist Dr. Expo Zicion. This invention, a magical hat that functions like a boomerang, becomes Jack’s signature weapon and the key to overcoming the many dangers that await him. Determined to rescue the princess and restore peace, Jack begins a journey across multiple regions of the kingdom in search of magical energy crystals needed to stop the villain’s plan. Although the narrative remains relatively simple, it serves its purpose by giving players a clear objective while maintaining a lighthearted tone. The story unfolds primarily through brief scenes and level progression rather than lengthy dialogue sequences. Like many classic platformers that inspired it, JACK ’N’ HAT focuses more on the adventure itself than on complicated storytelling. The emphasis remains on the player’s journey through diverse landscapes and increasingly challenging stages rather than deep character development. The core gameplay revolves around traditional platforming mechanics such as jumping across platforms, avoiding environmental hazards, and defeating enemies that block the player’s path. Jack’s most distinctive ability is his throwable hat, which acts as both a ranged weapon and a versatile tool for interacting with the environment. The hat can be launched forward to defeat enemies, break obstacles, or activate certain objects within the level. After being thrown, it returns to Jack like a boomerang, allowing players to attack enemies from a safe distance while maintaining momentum through the stage. In addition to using the hat, Jack can defeat certain enemies by jumping on them, a classic mechanic borrowed from earlier platforming games. The combination of ranged attacks and traditional enemy stomping creates a balanced combat system that feels familiar while still offering some variety in how players approach encounters. Enemy designs vary throughout the adventure, introducing new behaviors that force players to adapt their timing and movement strategies. The levels themselves are filled with hazards designed to challenge the player’s reflexes and precision. Spikes, moving platforms, bottomless pits, and enemy patrols require careful timing and awareness to navigate successfully. As players progress through the game, these elements become more complex, often appearing in combinations that require quick decision-making and well-timed jumps. While the early stages serve as a gentle introduction to the mechanics, later levels demand greater mastery of Jack’s movement and abilities. Exploration plays a significant role in the game’s design. Each level contains multiple collectibles that encourage players to thoroughly search their surroundings. The most important objective is locating an energy crystal, which is required to unlock additional stages and advance the story. However, other collectibles add extra layers of challenge. Hidden letters scattered throughout the stages spell out Jack’s name, and players can also earn rewards by destroying crates and uncovering secret areas tucked away in less obvious parts of the map. These optional goals add replay value by motivating players to revisit stages in order to achieve full completion. Some collectibles are placed in difficult-to-reach locations that require precise platforming or clever use of Jack’s hat ability. For players who enjoy completionist challenges, searching for every hidden item becomes an engaging part of the gameplay loop. The adventure is structured around a series of large levels connected through a hub-like progression system. As players collect energy crystals, new stages become accessible, gradually expanding the scope of the world. In total, the game includes more than twenty levels spread across several distinct regions. Each area introduces new environmental themes and gameplay variations, ensuring that the adventure maintains visual and mechanical variety as Jack travels deeper into the kingdom. Boss battles serve as major milestones in the journey. These encounters appear at key points in the game and require players to observe attack patterns while carefully timing their own actions. Bosses are typically larger and more dangerous than regular enemies, presenting unique mechanics that test the skills players have developed throughout the previous levels. Defeating these powerful foes provides a satisfying sense of accomplishment and marks important progress in Jack’s quest to rescue the princess. Visually, JACK ’N’ HAT embraces a vibrant pixel-art style that pays homage to the golden age of console platformers. The environments are richly colored and filled with playful details that bring the world of Ririland to life. Each region features its own visual identity, ranging from lush forests to desert landscapes and fiery volcanic areas. The sprite work is detailed and expressive, giving characters and enemies personality through fluid animations and exaggerated movements. The audio design complements the visual presentation with energetic music that matches the adventurous tone of the game. Each environment features its own musical theme, helping to establish a unique atmosphere for different stages. Sound effects accompany actions such as jumping, throwing the hat, and defeating enemies, providing satisfying feedback that reinforces the game’s fast-paced platforming rhythm. One of the strengths of the game is its accessibility. The mechanics are easy to learn, making it approachable for players who may be new to platformers while still offering enough challenge to keep experienced players engaged. The gradual increase in difficulty allows players to become comfortable with the controls before facing more demanding obstacles later in the adventure. However, the game’s commitment to classic design also means that it does not attempt to significantly reinvent the platforming genre. Many of its mechanics and level structures follow familiar patterns established by earlier titles. For players who enjoy nostalgic gameplay, this familiarity is part of the appeal, but those looking for highly innovative systems may find the experience somewhat traditional. Overall, JACK ’N’ HAT offers a fun and energetic journey through a vibrant fantasy world filled with platforming challenges and hidden treasures. It may not drastically change the formula established by earlier games, but it executes that formula with enthusiasm and attention to detail. For players who appreciate retro-inspired platformers and lighthearted adventures, Jack’s quest to save the kingdom provides an entertaining and nostalgic experience. Rating: 6/10
