I generally prefer to focus on the positives, especially in indie games with discount price tags, but Jack Axe has at least one game breaking bug. In the last level, right before the boss, I got stuck in a scene after going through a door. I quit to the title and restarted, and... now loading my save boots me back to the title screen! Even creating a new save file is stuck in the same way. Aside from that, here was my impression of the first 99% of the game: Pros: + Satisfying axe locomotion. You can combine wall jump, arc jump (down+attack), air axe, dash-to-axe, and extra jump after axe catch. You can sequence break a few things in a really satisfying way! + Great color palette, very legible platform graphics, very fun to look at despite simplicity. + Fast loads, so there's very little downtime, like Super Meat Boy or Celeste. Very easy to guzzle in one sitting. Cons: - My save file is broken, and I am extremely discouraged from ever playing it again - The swimming is unacceptable. Jack doesn't swim like Mario or other well-known platformers. She pivots 360 degrees around a point above her head, so changing direction can swivel her into obstacles in directions other than where you're pointing. - Some of the graphics are not up to the same level as the others. Different water textures overlapping are just sprites on top of each other and don't tile together cleanly. The lava monster is scaled way up and way more pixelated than everything else. Etc. It's just not coherent. - Some of the mechanics are fighting against each other. There's no health, 1-hit kills, which is fine on its own, but that makes it a chore to get killed while traversing the large main areas and get sent back pretty far. - The level design can feel a little aimless. Some games have really great landmarks and sense of place, but I often forgot where I was in the larger areas.
basically just mario odyssey minus the captures if it was 2d and made by an indie studio. movement feels great once you get the hang of it. world 4 is a weak point imo but it picks back up afterward. it's not too long, I definitely recommend it.
The game isn't so hard as its controls are a pain, but it's just sloppy enough to be frustrating. Whatever early dialogue told you what your goals were was completely skipped somehow, sometimes landing on moving platforms will cause the platform to move without you, making you slide to your death, and going through the wrong door twice apparently glitches you into a wall, saves you into an unwinnable state, and makes your save data unplayable on the last stage. Probably more fun with friends but I wouldn't force it upon them.
This is a fun and challenging little platformer, with solid mechanics but a bit of jank here and there. You explore 5 worlds with collectibles scattered around, plus a final world with the last boss, and need to work your way around with your limited moveset. Most of the difficulty comes from reaching places at the edge of the screen that may have a hazard out of sight, or your own misinputs (namely, doing walljumps and accidentaly pressing down while in the air, which drops you at terminal velocity, and happened more times than I can keep track of). Also, the underwater sections, where you can be facing a direction, toss your axe, and it goes the opposite direction for some unknown reason. And finally, the audio mixing is odd, with the music and sound effects changing volume randomly (for example, at moments the music is slightly louder than usual, yet you barely hear the sound of a rune that you just grabbed). Those things don't break the game, but do cause a bit of anger each time they come up. Overall a 6/10 platfmormer, just make sure to hold your urge to toss your controller when you die due to something you had no control of.
I've tried multiple difficulties to try and enjoy myself more, but I think this game is just tedious. The controls aren't fun to use, clunky and dysfunctional, plus, the boss fight at the end was honestly the most unexciting fight in the game, maybe just because I was expecting a more climactic finish? The art style was cute though, and I actually really enjoyed the first 2-3 levels, before it lost steam.
I want to recommend this game to other people, because it's genuinely fun. But I can't do so in good faith due to certain bugs that seem to crop up near the end. Certain levels in the 5th world don't seem to have a proper background, consisting instead of light and dark blue squares. While I was happy for the music change, it still felt like the game was in beta or something. World 6 also had visual affects that have to do with the water orbs, like they were placed in the wrong area or something. Finally, the game just straight up crashed while I was fighting what I presume was the final boss. Until this point, I was willing to forgive the repetitive music and the, I'll admit few out of the many I had, deaths that were not really my fault (my biggest example being when I ground pounded breakable blocks and dived head first into a fish I had no hope of seeing) since death isn't really that big of a deal, but these problems soured what was otherwise a good game I could enjoy in one sitting without much issue. If you read these reviews, please let me know when/if these issues get fixed and I'll happily recommend the game.
