Difficulty : 4.5/5 (Extremely Hard) Global : 3.5/5 (Very Good) Curator page : Anokturnus Inner Tao is a minimalist puzzle game in which you control both a yin and a yang ball that need to help each other. An Inner Tao level consists of four elements: a yin and a yang ball you can control, yin and yang zones that make the floor of the level, orbs you can push, and marks on which the orbs need to be placed. Once every mark has an orb on it, the level is complete. The complexity of Inner Tao comes from the movement restrictions affecting every element of the puzzles. Yin can only move through yang and vice versa. The type of the orbs is determined by the zone they are in; if an orb is in a yin zone (meaning it's yang) and pushed in a yang zone, it switches from yang to yin. The controllable balls can never switch type. Thus, orbs are more than your typical sokoban dead weights, they need to be cleverly used to navigate through the puzzles. The balls can enter an orb of the opposite type, allowing you to use orbs as bridges. A ball coming into contact with an orb of the same type will push it, but you can also push an orb that has a ball in it. Confused? That's nothing compared to actually playing the game. The thinking in Inner Tao is very counterintuitive, it takes quite some time to get used to it. This is an extremely difficult game. There are only 36 small levels, but they are all designed to crush you (especially from level 20 onwards). It's one of those games in which you clench your fists after each success, as if you just did something miraculous. I'm forced to recognize the very good puzzle design, it's absolutely undeniable a lot of care went into it. Lots of levels can be solved by pure thinking, deducing the critical step and how it needs to be set up often leads to victory. However, the premise of the game is perhaps too convoluted. Some levels end up being a bit tedious and hardly solvable without trial and error, taking out a bit of the fun. The name "Inner Tao" is absolutely perfect. The meditative part of this game comes from all the long sighs you're letting out in front of these perplexing challenges. Your inner tao is truly unconsciously awakening. Jokes aside, Inner Tao is a very good unique puzzle game that will seriously challenge anyone. Highly recommended. Simple, unique, beautiful little sokoban-like. I say "little", but I am only halfway through the game, and my progress has slowed to a crawl, so I imagine this will take me tens of hours to beat. There are only 36 puzzles, but the developer has given us the cream of the crop; there is no bloat, only worthwhile puzzles. This is easily worth more than $3. There are a lot of sokoban-like games out there. To me, the hallmark of a good sokoban-like is whether the solutions feel like there is a method to the madness. For a bad puzzle game, you find yourself simply trying all possible moves until you stumble upon the solution. Inner Tao is a good puzzle game, because you can logically reason about what a solution must look like. While playing, I would think things like, "OK, I need to push this block to this square, but the colors change, so I need another block next to it..." This is exactly what puzzle solving should be like.
For some reason, this is using a ton of resources on both Steam Deck and PC. Ramping up GPU and CPU, +20c on Deck. There's no reason for that on such a simplistic game. Wonder what's going on in the background
This is a great minimalistic sokoban puzzler. It is simple and has one mechanic that made it very hard for me to beat this one. The only negative I could find is non re-bindable keys. Great puzzler, so simple and at times very challenging and it is without doubt a must buy for the fans of the genre.
This is an amazing game with very elegant puzzles that is just way too hard for me, even though I've beaten tough puzzle games like Baba Is You, SSR, Syzygy, Recursed etc. Despite being so very simple, the complexity of the sokoban puzzles here are insanely high, even though they start off easily enough and became impossible to me shortly after level 20. You'll always need to think ahead many steps and you'll need a very high capacity for abstraction. Despite this being too difficult to be fun for me, I can acknowledge how great this game is. Not sure I'll ever beat it, though. If you're a hardcore puzzle lover, don't miss this one! But be warned of how tough this is, don't be deceived by its looks.
《Inner Tao》(英语课上说Tao应该指的是我们的“道”,所以标题可以译为“内在之道”?)
Unique sokoban puzzler that has fun with positive and negative space. Won't talk much about it for spoilers but if you like unique push block puzzles this one has since nice mechanics. There is a quick undo and reset feature and I like that you can even undo your resets.
Like all Le Slo's work, brilliant, beautiful, and extremely difficult.
