everybody dead, whodunnit? not only is this a question regarding the story of inexplicable deaths in damipolis, but it also applies to the game itself. everything is pretty much broken, and I guess people mentioned in the credits dunnit. they had one whole tester, which explains a lot, and I'm sure kickstarter backers are ecstatic about the result. the gist is, 12 guests die at a mansion, you're one of them and somehow come back to life(ish) to figure out what happened and why, made all the more difficult by the fact that you can't remember anything. and the game being broken, but that shouldn't be part of the deal. guests are all represented by dummies (or maybe in this world dummies are people), and they're annoyingly referred to as dumans. the only way to escape is by finding four totems, one of your own self, plus a bunch of tarot cards, then decide which cards to assign to which totem, followed by placing the totems where you think they should be placed and opening a chest for some reason. there are 6 chapters to go through and reach one of multiple endings based on decisions. there have been 4 patches since release in mid-december, supposedly fixing all sorts of issues, including a major language mix-up, but the first thing the game asks you is to choose a language and even that is buggy, it's partly what you chose, partly spanish. text in general falls into 3 categories when choosing english: actual english text, spanish text, or 'placeholder', which is an english word at least. controls are a mess as well. in true 1st-person puzzler fashion you can walk around with wasd, look around with the mouse and interact with left click, and that's about all the properly working things in the game. no mouse cursor anywhere (except a crosshair while walking around), only mouse wheel to move the selection, which is incredibly uncomfortable, plus left click to select and right click to cancel. keyboard is even worse. no prompts anywhere, and if they do make a rare appearance, they're only for controllers, so I had to try every key to find out the non-rebindable and incredibly unintuitive control scheme. in the main menu only arrows work, wasd doesn't, enter or esc don't do anything anywhere, you can press 'e' or 'f' to select something in the main menu itself, but once settings are brought up, only 'e' works, plus the very convenient and logical 'b' to close the settings screen, and nothing but left click works for starting the game proper. while in the game, 'i' is inventory, only closable with right click, 'm' brings up a few icons that can only be navigated by the arrows and selected with 'f'. inventory is one of them, tarot for the cards is another, plus notes (collectible pieces of lore), and settings can be brought up from here as well, which is good news, except now only 'f' works if you want to change something. the game is nothing if not consistent. all these should have hotkeys and proper mouse controls. and not only do you need multiple keypresses to bring up a simple pause menu, the control scheme is only shown for controllers, either in spanish or with 'placeholder' everywhere (funnily enough, the same thing is fine when it appears as a loading screen), and if you go back to the main menu, the entire opening monolog has to be skipped again, sentence by sentence. going back there doesn't save progress, but there's a save and exit option, leading back to the desktop instead of the more reasonable main menu. so while saving anytime is technically possible, it's done in an unacceptable way, nicely matching the rest of the game. settings would be mostly fine otherwise, if only they worked without issues: separate volumes, brightness, contrast, languages and graphics detail, but no resolutions or windowed mode, nor axis flips for the mouse or field of view settings. same goes for the game, it could've ended up being something cool if at least a few half-competent people were on the development team, but it remains to be seen if this is as good (i.e. catastrophic) as it gets or we'll get to see the game's real potential, which very well might be just that, a relatively good idea executed badly even with the kinks ironed out. needless to say, until then stay very far away from this steaming pile and the people behind it. I've seen some messy launches, but this is definitely up there with the worst of them. oh, and while messing around, I managed to get the same achievement about 5 times. definitely unlocked that one.
You know, I always like to make my reviews professional-looking, writing a whole paragraph as the introduction to the rest of the review. But for this game, I will get straight to the point, as I have no idea how to do that for this particular game. The game shows it's clearly not up to a PC game's standards right at the beginning. The first menu you see after firing the game up, is the language selection. Now at first, it seems simple: Just choose a language you're comfortable with and play, right? WRONG. The game actually refused to show me keyboard controls and asked me to press the X button to proceed. I tried every button that's usually used for confirming things: enter, space bar, shift, the X button itself, left mouse button, right mouse button... but none worked. Therefore, I had to force quit the game through Steam Overlay, plug my controller in and start the game again. I chose English as my preferred language and... then I wondered why the hell everything is suddenly in Spanish. This leads us to the next standard thing the game does wrong: There is no main menu. The moment you start the game from the title screen, you will get thrown into the gameplay. So you cannot choose to start a whole new game (to reset progress) or even change the settings. Now you might think that "Well, I could change settings from in-game" right? Well I have bad news: There is no pause screen either. You cannot change the resolution, you cannot change audio levels, you cannot rebind controls, you cannot change camera sensitivity, you cannot change graphical quality and if you're game's language is wrong like me, you can't change that either. So the only way to change stuff or reset the settings, is to use the Registry Editor (on Windows that is) and delete the game's registry keys, which many inexperienced users won't be able to do it safely. Weirdly enough, the game appears to support KB+M inputs at this point onwards; which begs the question why the layout doesn't get explained. UPDATE: Thanks to a wonderful person in the comments, I found out there IS a main menu with changeable settings. However the game never tells you that you can press the "M" key to access it. Even then, this bit of information won't help you as most of its texts are in Spanish. And the gameplay... oh boy. Aside from the controls which the game shows you in a brief loading screen, it tells you nothing. So it's up to you to navigate through the level, investigate stuff and find items. Now this would not have been a massive problem if the game did not feature elements of puzzle solving and a boatload of severe issues. You can pick up items in this game, but you won't be able to use them as the inventory always appears to be empty. The game has not been properly translated to English and you will find placeholder text for a bunch of stuff (for example, the "Press X to start" message on title screen is always in Spanish, regardless of what language you chose). The font size is not consistent and will shrink to an unreadable size at times. Hell, I even got frustrated at one point and started to push every button on my controller, which led me to a cutscene stating my character was dead. Not to mention the constant barrage of "Achievement Unlocked" pop-ups in the corner of my screen, stating I have unlocked the "Custodio" achievement while in fact I have not. So overall, I cannot and will not recommend this game. The game sure looks interesting, but it's way too problematic, flawed and lackluster to even be called an early access title.
Should not have been released in its current state, or at the very least it should be marked Early Access. I'm not sure if it's playable on Windows - my items don't show up in the inventory, but that might be because I use Linux with Proton. In any case, the English translation is incomplete, item descriptions are missing, "placeholder" texts appear... See the screenshots I shared. It looks like it has potential, but right now it's a mess.
This game is in an unplayable, buggy state. It is my opinion that this game should not have been released in the state that it's in. Some bugs that you'll encounter: -Does not appear to recognize controllers -Both English and Espanol language options are labeled "Espanol." -"Notes" menu completely non-functional. -Many inventory items are labeled "Placeholder" when trying to view. -Getting trapped in menus is a common occurrence, causing user to have to force-shutdown game. -Inventory items randomly disappear. -Shaders (reflections of rainfall) appear in places where the effects wouldn't be visible (rooms without windows) -Objects that are interacted with but not picked up (there is a "discard" option) disappear from the screen, can only be picked up again by remembering where they used to be and clicking on that spot. -Some hotspots appear to be interactable (the reticle responds to them) but clicking them yields no results. The UI and menu system is also non-standard, under-explained, and very abstruse. To access the menu, you press "M" on the keyboard, then navigate with the arrow keys and select options by clicking the mouse buttons. Once you get into the menu, the instructions at the bottom of the screen refer to options that don't have functionality or are found on input devices you aren't using (i.e. using a mouse and keyboard, it tells you to scroll with the "Right and Left Bumpers".) The game is unplayable in it's current state and I wouldn't spend any money on it until these issues are addressed and fixed. I feel badly for those who funded this through it's kickstarter and hope that the developers are working hard to make the game playable. It's a real shame because it looks beautiful and unique.
The game looks absolutely beautiful and has lots of potential but, at the time this review is being written, is so bugged that is unplayable. Every few weeks I try to play it again, and every time the game either crashes or the inputs stop working. There are tons of placeholders and missing texts and everything just feels half done. I will gladly change this review once I´m able to go a single playthrough without encountering a game crippling bug, but I feel right now it´s just too broken to recommend it to anyone.
