I'm sure the story is very cool and they worked hard on it but... I don't want to read it right now. I opened the game because I want to play a rhythm game. I'll read the story later when I'm in the mood for it. Don't make me sit through hours of fast forwarded dialogue to unlock stuff. That's not fun. In most games, when you play the game, you get rewarded with more game to play. In Arcaea, you play songs to unlock more songs. You read story chapters and get rewarded with more story chapters. In In Falsus, you play songs and then get punished with chores. As is, it is unfortunately difficult to recommend. The actual rhythm game is great, but the VN progression aspect is a tough sell. Clarification: I like that it has a story! The issue is that I want to play the game to progress the story. I don't want to read the story to progress the game. The gameplay loop is backwards. Imagine if you opened a racing game and were greeted with one menu where you could play the actual game, and another where you had to watch 15 minute non-interactive cutscenes to unlock new cars. That's what this game does. You've taken an interesting and challenging game and made the primary method of progression repeatedly hitting the space bar. That's just not an enjoyable to me.

Good game, there should be a mixed review option. - Delisting demo when the mechanics aren't easy to learn is a bit scummy, what's the reason to delist it anyway? You don't want people to try your game? - Let us remap side lane notes to mouse buttons. - And it's most likeley a skill issue, but side lanes are hard to read, darker background or some way to make those notes more visible would make this game better. Especially since as many said, jumping between two middle difficulties is brutal.
Is In Falsus worth the buy? Yes, absolutely. You are getting an incredibly high-quality, one-of-a-kind rhythm game with 80 tracks, a 10-hour-long visual novel with full voicework, and a... mildly amusing puzzle game. This is probably the best content-to-dollar ratio I've seen out of a PC rhythm game, and that's with DJMax Respect included. Does it have problems? Yeah! Quite a number! Please look at my playtime - I'm writing this review right after finishing the campaign - and you can see the first one! The damn card system. The. Damn. Card. System. You can turn it off, the game tells you. This is a warning you should heed. See, I like puzzle games, so I figure, why not? No. No, not when I have to play it. I can be going about the story just fine, before my hand gets rudely slapped mid-song; "NO! You aren't doing it right! Spend 15 minutes fitting hexagons together!" This is the first rhythm game I've ever seen that feels the need to have the equivalent of a mandatory hacking minigame in it. This would be a fun diversion if it were off to the side, and not a prerequisite to keep reading a visual novel. The absolute peak of my frustration with this system is at the LITERAL ACTUAL CLIMAX TO THE STORY, which suddenly STOPS YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INCREDIBLY DRAMATIC MOMENT to MAKE you place down hexagon bridges. Guess what that accomplishes? It takes the tension behind the shed, and puts a bullet in its skull! How is this the way you're recommended to play?? Turn on Assist Mode. Don't be like me. Okay, that's out of the way, let's talk rhythm game. This is the latest attempt at translating the appeal of SEGA's non-export arcade game ONGEKI, and to a control scheme that doesn't require specialized hardware. (I played ONGEKI while I was over in Japan, so trust me when I say the influence is clear. Fun game! Wish the girls weren't dressed like that!) I have been playing rhythm games for over 7 years now, and I'm somewhere in the upper-intermediate skill level; with my accolades on the table, I make no reservations to tell you this game is HARD. In Falsus seriously gives Beatmania a run for its money in terms of sheer skill ceiling, and you don't even need a 200$ controller for this one. As you can imagine, working 6 keys with your human, 5-fingered hand is a bit demanding, doubly so when both of your hands are having to work polyrhythms. If you're the kind of masochist I am that loves it when a game rightfully calls you trash, you've got your work cut out for grinding your skill level up. Probably for the next year or so. I'd also like to stop and appreciate the track select for the sheer breadth of original music. If you're a genre connoisseur, there are a lot of names in this game that will make you stop and point at the screen like an excited child. Doubly so, if you've played Arcaea prior to this. I am choosing not to name any names for spoiler-y reasons. Just know that if you have any knowledge of East Asian dance producers, this will be a very exciting playthrough for one reason or another. The story... hm. It's alright? It feels WAY too back-loaded. All of the really interesting stuff happens very late, and you've got to get through a lot of Cute Girls Doing Cute Things to get there... and also its counterpart very common to visual novels, Cute Girls Experiencing Mental Issues. I think my main problem, without getting too spoiler-y, is that the story feels like it's pulling its punches. There's not a lot that really feels like it's changed by the end of it. Lowiro, I'm up to date on Arcaea's story. I know you guys can put some anime girls through some absurd trauma, and this isn't really it. Also, I totally got yuri-baited. The girls go through the whole story making googly eyes at one another, and it's almost never acknowledged or acted on beyond narration. There's a hug. Maybe two. Inexcusable. Leave the pining to the professionals, dammit. My homegirl Tairitsu
didn't die for this
. The big elephant in the room: In Falsus has a lot for a lot of different kinds of people. But the odds that you, reader, will enjoy all of these elements in equal amounts, are VANISHINGLY low. People that want to get their blood pumping with a hard rhythm game are going to get bored sitting through a long narrative. People that want a good visual novel are going to get frustrated with a hard rhythm game interrupting key narrative beats for 2-3 minutes. And, uh. There's a puzzle game. It's there. I think the fatal flaw of this game is that it assumes that you already like the 3 things it has to offer - which I did, but I'm kind of a freak. And even if you are that freak, too, its insistence on constantly forcing you to switch between them is obnoxious. I think this is the first time I've considered a game's problem to be having Too Much Game. This is a game excited to show you all of its work, and I mean ALL of it. And, I mean, it's impressive! It's got years of production value! It's, just. For a game where the big theme of the narrative is to make the most of your time, it sure doesn't take YOURS into account.
In Falsus, by the devs behind Arcaea (one of the biggest and most innovative mobile rhythm games), has finally arrived to PC combining rhythm game, visual novel, and puzzle elements. The Good: + You might think the price tag is steep, but you get over 70 playable songs and a pretty good and LONG VN experience. As far as content is concerned, the price is appropriate. + Unlike other rhythm games, it's not live service and acts as a full title on its own. Expect a full experience. + By virtue of being a VN, the story is very digestible. It starts out kinda sus but is emotionally tuned well as it goes on. + CV is good, fitting, and adds soul. + The UI and soundtrack are well-polished and sound quality is pretty good. + The song selection is great and they even brought in some very good tracks from Arcaea. + The card crafting system adds brain churning and satisfying puzzle elements, though it can get repetitive and grindy with the amount of trial and error and parts farming. The Bad: In Falsus' biggest pain is that it's unique control scheme is so complex and unintuitive it leads to an EXTREMELY steep learning curve. It's so weird that the game is SCREAMING to have a controller made just for it. In fact, people have been taking that into their own hands. Your right hand is tied up with the mouse, leaving your left hand to manage six keys on its own. You are expected to hold your left hand in an unwieldy position and shift it left and right to move your three middle fingers. It's very easy to lose track of where your left hand is. The far left and far right lanes (SHIFT and SPACE, respectively), are not easy to notice and feel pretty unnatural to hit, especially in combination with other notes. Another thing I will say in regards to this: Disabling the game's demo with a control scheme as beginner unfriendly as this is a scummy move. Verdict: In Falsus is a difficult game to recommend to the general crowd. Not because it's bad, but because of what it's trying to be. It's not a rhythm game first. It's not a visual novel first. It's not a puzzle game first. All three are intertwined as part of the whole system needed for progression. - You need to play the VN to unlock songs and cards. - You need to craft good enough cards to win in the rhythm game as part of story battles. - You have to succeed at the rhythm game and tough out getting used to an unfamiliar control scheme to get good parts to craft better cards and progress the story. However, for those who manage to make all these systems click, the game's content and progression feels extremely rewarding to get done. I had some growing pains with the controls but after that I'm having a blast so far (having played the demo + rhythm game experience helps but doesn't nullify learning the control scheme). Overall, it's worth a shot, but the lack of a demo after release complicates this.
