Just like many reviews already said, a hidden gem and it's all free. If the games description and the hope for an unexpected ending with the base game and then DLC Expansion that is completely different from the game you're looking at on this store page sounds interesting to you go and play it already, it's worth it!
I really liked this game! It was a bit strange that the "horror" elements didn't show up until the very end. I think that would push people away that are only wanting to play for either the slice of life or "horror" aspects, but it is perfect for people who are into both. The ending is foreshadowed wonderfully and when returning for a second playthrough you get to see how all the little details line up. On my first playthrough I either missed the hints or figured that the weird elements were just the typical plot holes you'll get in a small game. On a negative note some of the arcade games (Zouhou and Monkey Zong) are really hard, but that might just be a skill issue. I ended up getting a friend to beat them so I could 100% I can't wait to play the second game!

I Wanna Be A Game Dev!, developed and published by Lyko Studio, is a narrative-driven indie visual novel that approaches the idea of game development not as a technical process, but as an emotional journey shaped by ambition, doubt, and persistence. Rather than focusing on mechanics like coding, design systems, or business simulation, the game presents a more personal perspective, following a protagonist who aspires to enter the world of game creation. This choice immediately defines the experience: it is less about “how games are made” and more about “why people choose to make them,” and the struggles that come with chasing that dream. The structure is largely linear, unfolding as a kinetic visual novel where player interaction is minimal and the story progresses through dialogue and internal monologue. This puts a great deal of weight on the writing, which carries the experience through its relatively short runtime. The narrative often shifts between lighthearted, almost playful conversations and more introspective reflections on creative insecurity, burnout, and the fear of failure. These tonal shifts give the story a sense of authenticity, capturing the emotional fluctuations that often accompany creative pursuits. While the plot itself is modest in scope, the themes it touches on—self-worth, perseverance, and the desire to create something meaningful—give it a broader resonance. Character interactions play a central role in shaping the narrative. The supporting cast serves as both mirrors and contrasts to the protagonist’s mindset, representing different attitudes toward creativity and success. Some characters embody optimism and collaboration, while others reflect skepticism or disillusionment, creating a dynamic that feels grounded and relatable. Through these relationships, the story explores how external influences and personal connections can shape one’s creative path. The emotional weight of the game comes not from dramatic events, but from these quieter, character-driven moments that gradually reveal the protagonist’s growth. In terms of presentation, the game embraces a simple yet expressive style. The pixel art visuals and straightforward interface reflect its indie origins, offering charm rather than technical sophistication. The aesthetic choices feel cohesive with the tone of the story, reinforcing its personal and intimate nature. While the production values are modest, they rarely detract from the experience, instead contributing to the sense that this is a project driven by passion rather than polish. The audio design follows a similar approach, supporting the mood without drawing significant attention to itself. However, the game’s simplicity also highlights its limitations. The lack of branching paths or meaningful choices reduces replayability, and players looking for a more interactive or gameplay-heavy experience may find it lacking. The pacing can feel uneven at times, with certain segments moving too quickly while others linger without adding significant depth. Additionally, the narrative’s relatively short length and somewhat abrupt conclusion may leave some players wishing for a more fully developed arc, as though the story ends just as it begins to fully explore its potential. Despite these shortcomings, I Wanna Be A Game Dev! succeeds in delivering a heartfelt and relatable narrative that resonates with anyone who has ever pursued a creative goal. It captures the uncertainty and passion behind making something from nothing, offering a perspective that feels genuine and grounded. While it may not stand out in terms of gameplay or technical ambition, its sincerity and thematic focus give it a quiet impact that lingers beyond its brief runtime. Rating: 8/10
Britney for life. This is the best free game you're ever going to get anywhere.
