It's a good game!
Well, I have now finished this game twice in short succession (the playtime here only represents one of those plays, albeit slightly inflated from the times I didn't turn it off when I got busy, because I originally played it on Itch), so here is a second review of "I Hate You, Please Suffer". This game is honestly something of a masterpiece. Both the first and second times I played it were very good, and surprisingly different. The first time, the game displayed a fantastic use of the feeling of frustration. From having to spend money to move around and save (not much, but you can still FEEL it) to the times you can have gear stolen from you, and even just to the start of the game being quite difficult, especially on the first go around, the game is just straight up frustrating in a way that is both interesting, and works really well with the story the game tells. On the second time, I already knew everything I had missed on the first time, and all the pitfalls I ran into, and it was kind of fun to play through the game having a huge advantage (seriously, by the late game I had one character who basically couldn't die and another who could casually do half of all the bosses health every turn with no downsides). Some of the frustration remained, but it was interesting how it felt very different. Beyond just that, the story and characters are very good, although I'll mostly leave it at that to avoid any accidental spoilers. I will say that I didn't end up playing through the alternate route, but there is one, which makes the game's already impressive length even more impressive (seriously, a indie RPG Maker game with just the one developer with this long of a playtime, especially given that there's not much in the way of "walk through this same dungeon 4 times" or other cheap methods of increasing playtime). On the second playthrough, I even did a bunch of the stuff I had missed on the first, which was really nice. The combat is also very fun both times I played. Each of the party members has a distinctly different style, but they all have solid uses in combat. This time, I actually did get all of the Spiritual Healing locked skills, so it was neat seeing what they all could do. The music for the game is also really excellent, I'll have to check out Rrrrrose's work as Loyalty Freak Music some more. I played the game the first time with the music off, but having played it this time with it on the whole time, it really enhances the experience. I also played against both bonus bosses, although they were quite easy this time (there is a certain weapon that is kind of overpowered). They were a bit more of a challenge last run, but my party really was absurdly overpowered this time. Oh, right, also now I can read Rot, which I really should have picked up on what the name was the first run through.
TL;DR version: Experimental RPGMaker game that tackles the meaning of life by throwing colorful battles and brutal obstacles along your -and your party's- way which, will, in turn, make you stronger (ok, and your new gear and abilities^^ ). Find the way to unlock your future party members, give the fight of your life constantly with them by your side -if you wish so- and mold the most interesting protagonist ever! A hidden gem. "I Hate You, Please Suffer - Complete" is one of the most COMPLETE indie games I have ever played. Do NOT get fooled by its looks.. They are deceiving... At first glance you'll think it's your typical, run of the mill, low effort rpgmaker game. Then you start noticing the details... The shifting in the artstyle, the minor differences in the pixel art, the use of colors and effects to create a unique feeling for each scene and many more subtle deviations craft a universe like no other! From mundane and monotonous to borderline glittery if it wants to spark hope! Our suffering starts with the music but before you know it, it makes sense! Same goes with the difficulties [strike]life[/strike] the game throws at us! It's an insane story with memorable characters. You might not remember it in detail forever but the feeling it will create, the memories and the bottom line will be stuck with you forever. It's an experimental title and thus, it has its quirks. You must like philosophy or, in the very least, you must like looking for answers in order to like this game. Nothing and everything is fair game; everything is what you want it to be. You are the underdog and always in a fight for survival... Whatever that entails^^ The gameplay is familiar. Beat X enemy, buy Y gear, upgrade/level your chatacter, etc. Somehow, by creating such an open world and giving us so many choices to pursue, along with a leveling system where the enemies scale to us, it feels brutal and liberating too when we finally make it! Each fight is equally dangerous and exciting! They are painful too.. Every single decision matters and you can totally screw yourself. Hope though, dies last! So there is ALWAYS something to fight for, no matter how many times you get thrown down! You can approach the game as you like. Do missions, try to become an adventurer to survive, try to become the best or barely scrape by, have meaningful or insane conversations, get fooled, get beaten, find yourself, find "god", wander aimlessly, die... Your ultimate goal is to become a great adventurer. Succesful, rich, known, HAPPY. It has its perks living a risky life... Will you go down that path?... Battle your way from dumpsters and seweres to forests and temples. Fight dirty or with style! You can even bribe your opponents! Use the craziest and most out there techniques to win your enemy, pure strength isn't the only way. Alongside you are your party members (should you unlock them). Prepare for some great and wild fights and even more surreal conversations and dialogues! Each character is a streched out version of something. The rest you'll have to figure out on your own! Many hours of gameplay and content. If you want to see everything, try everything and fool around then it will definitely last muuuch longer than you think. You can try "I Hate You, Please Suffer - Basic", the free to play shorter version, to see if you like it but, if you made it through the end of my review it means you are triggered by it. So, with this in mind, just go buy it! And play it for hours on end... Suffer, suffer, suffer and then suffer some more! I promise you, you'll scream A LOT... You'll feel the hate! But it will all be worth it in the end! For more reviews, follow my curator https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44864435-Mewesome-Reviews/
I really think I Hate You, Please Suffer is already one of my favorite games of all time. I was expecting a lot of things going in, but really I wasn't prepared for how much I would fall in love with all of these characters. They really are all wonderful, this game is the perfect blend of charming and witty, and heartbreaking and painful. There are moments in this game that I am going to be thinking about for the rest of my life
Pervasively mildly annoying to simulate real world ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Thoroughly amusing and strangely uplifting.
Wholeheartedly recommend this game. The writing is beautifully sincere, and the themes are broached tastefully and quite well. If you can handle some pain, or a fan of games that offer suffering as a part of the experience, try this game out. Definitely going on my list of top RPGMaker games.
At the time of writing this review, I have just finished the Happy Ending. I have also finished the Rental Ending as my first ending (which is a shorter, incomplete version of the Happy Ending). In total, I have played through the game twice. I figured that now will be a good time to write my review. I'll try to keep it as concise as possible. Neutral - Stuff that I neither liked nor disliked. It will change depending on the type of person you are Heavily LGBTQ+ themed, particularly the T. The main character is transsexual. Actually there's two characters that are transsexual. Oh, and a few of the NPCs are also transsexual/non-binary. You take estrogen/testosterone pills at some point in the game (and they're really good for you so swallow all those pills you get). There's a polyamorous ending you can get as well. Plus a whole lot of other stuff. If this scares you, then the game is not for you. Stats are very fluid in this game and you will gain and lose them very quickly. You can lock yourself out of quests, fail to get the better rewards, or lose items randomly. It can be frustrating but it's the name of the game. Only one save file means that you are (mostly) committed to your actions and consequences. I didn't mind this for the most part. The only thing I found that this really hurts is replayability since if you want to go for another path or do some achievements, you have to start all over from the very beginning. It hurts my drive to replay the game and go for another ending since having to replay from the beginning is kind of a slog. Pros - Stuff I really enjoyed World Setting - The setting was really unique. It takes your classic fantasy guild setting you've likely seen in anime such as Hunter x Hunter (fun fact, this was a direct inspiration) or Fairy Tail, and twists it to make it fit our modern world. And it works very well. Think of South Park: The Stick of Truth but actually real and not just kids role playing. Character Development - I've come to love the characters throughout the game, in particular the last party member you get. It surprised me because I wasn't too fond of them in the beginning but they've grown on me. Wide cast of NPCs - There's a lot of lovable NPCs (and some not-so-lovable ones), ranging from ex-fast food employees, a family of 4, ex-thieves, and more. The family of 4 was my favorite but they're all great. Combat - The combat was enjoyable enough. There are a few QoL issues I have with it and it can be clunky at times but overall, there's a good amount of options, you get 4 party members, lots of different equipment to choose from, and various tactics to use. If you've played many RPGMaker games, then I can assure you that you will be satisfied with this game as it's definitely better than your generic RPGMaker game combat. Art - I actually really loved the rough art. It fits the vibe of the game incredibly well, and the characters have their own unique style and flair. Some people won't like it as much as they would prefer a more modernized and cleaner artstyle, but I thought it fit well. It's a pro for me. Cons - Stuff I did not enjoy as much Clunky - This game is very clunky and has lots of QoL issues. The two biggest things off the top of my head that I remember is not being able to sprint in dungeons and the enemy encounter rate being insanely high. It feels like it takes ages to get through a section just because of how many monsters get thrown at you and how slow you move. It's really exhausting. There's lots of other stuff but they're mainly QoL issues. I still found enjoyment 95% of the time but there was definitely those 5% of the time where I was just incredibly annoyed at the game for being so clunky. Replayability - There actually is a lot to replay since there's multiple endings and lots of different options and outcomes. Unfortunately the one save file hurts those prospects since if I want to see the different endings or get some achievements, I really have to start all over from the beginning. I don't really feel like doing that. Final Thoughts Is this game worth $13? I would say so. I have definitely got my money's worth with this game and I actually feel like I came out of it a better person in real life. It touches on a lot of social issues plaguing modern society right now and teaches some valuable lessons. The combat is fun, the characters are fantastic, and the stories, both the main and character-specific stories are sweet and touching, I enjoyed my time with the game. Maybe I'll replay it and try for a new ending.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this game is something else. In it's demo stage it had plenty of hours of content and plenty of side quests to do! And in the final stage it's basically doubled!! 100% worth the buy, especially for such a relatable game. Combat is wonderous, the story is incredible and keeps you on your toes, and the gameplay loop has a few choices to make it all the better.
I Hate You, Please Suffer is one of my favorite RPGS i've played in a while. I will say off the bat: it's intentionally designed to be a frustrating game at times, but it's, (at least in my opinion) never in an insurmountable method. Stuff like your stats being decreased by story events or dying, getting run over by a car because you didn't cross at the crosswalk, a finish line that seems to get further away just Slightly faster than you can approach it due to having to do other things... and yet, despite these things, the cast of characters pushes you along the way, to help you keep sight of the fact that things aren't AS bad as they look. The immaculate, strange presentation of the mix of photographs, royalty free sample music, and simple own drawn graphics is an amazing mix that appeals to me greatly. I've could spend ages rambling about everything about this game i love. I Probably will, later! Who should buy the game? -People looking for a challenge that isn't purely sadistic -Depressed Queers -People who like being a little cringe -People who like changes in games actually having a little bit of weight sometimes without it being full of "kyrie will remember you getting coffee instead of tea and hate you 4 chapters later" level cinematic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that took over and killed an entire game company Who Shouldn't Buy This Game? - People that simply cannot handle a challenge and adapting - RPG and Anime Dislikers - People who can't stand to see a girlboss or a girlmurderer (girl who murders, not someone who murders girls) winning
Story
The story, characters and world-building are simply the strongest aspects. It combines magical phenomena, capitalism economy, adulting and adventuring stuff well enough. I don't claim it's realistic, but it definitely received more than sufficient attention. I also agree with other reviewers that most of the characters feels real or unique, even for minor ones. Out of 4 party members, I feel emotionally invested even when I don't have a good grasp or relate to their issue. Although I would pick Kyrie as my personal favorite character. The story is great and quite entertaining. If this game were an LN, I would give it alternate title 'I became an adventurer to pay my rent, what could possibly go wrong?'. Aside from multiple endings (I don't know how many endings exist, although I saw 5), your choice also may have consequences for other characters and state of the world.
Visual/Audio
As shown on the store page, the visual looks rough (most likely on purpose). But I never feel it hampers me and I do not notice any stock-looking RPGMaker asset, so it has its own quirky charm. The choice of both sound effects and music are great. It's also nice that the game giving us option to choose different battle music themes, considering my gameplay duration.
Gameplay
To begin with, FCK the RNG. I have a hate-love (no, I didn't mix up the word order) relationship with it. I saw the game-over screen so many times during the early games and sometimes in ridiculous ways. For example, Ramona got permanently stunned from full HP until game over or the enemies always successfully apply bleeding or poisoned debuff. The learning curve also remains steep from the demo version I completed a few years ago, despite existance of help/tip hotline feature. But once you pass the early game (whether due to a bit of grinding for better equipment/items, avoiding being unlucky or using cheat), it becomes more enjoyable. You still need to use actual strategies and preparations, but it actually feels rewarding after beating tough enemies. It's also nice to see some unorthodox skill, buffs and debuffs that makes the combat feel fresh for a longer duration. Outside the combat, some side quests and activities are also fairly interesting and I bothered to try and solve some of those. In fact, there are ways to earn a fair amount of money and increase maximum HP while avoiding difficult combat. Lastly, the game also offers a toggleable option named ':)'. The game gives a brief explanation and it makes my instinct say I should never turn it on. I don't know what it actually does, but it probably spices up the gameplay if you happen to find it too easy or boring :).
Other
As expected from RPGMaker game, it runs well on my Linux device. If you wish to cheat by modifying the save file, you may need to find 'meow.dat' and rename it to 'meow.rxdata' before uploading/opening it on save editor tool. Just don't forget to make one or more backups.

I have a love-hate relationship with this game, but I like it enough to see 5 endings. While the RNG is still hideous (compared with when I completed the demo), the story is definitely worth it. If you're a RPGMaker/RPGMaker-esque enthusiast who is specifically looking for wacky, bizarre or esoteric titles, 'I Hate You, Please Suffer - Complete' is a perfect fit for you.
