This game promises to bring the frustrations of the real world into an RPG and empowers you to overcome them. It does so with systems of inconvenience, something the developer explored better in a previous title “Decay”. You can be randomly mailed a pipe bomb, some enemies stalk you and try to kill you after one conversation with them, This is the strength of the gameplay but often feels like an afterthought (Edit: Despite the title saying "Complete" this title is constantly being updated, while I know for a fact that most of what I talk about here is unchanged. I am not going to keep coming back every few months to make sure. LMK when the game is actually done.) Speaking of afterthought let's talk about the writing. The writing in this feels less than uninspired, This feels like less than a rough draft It feels like the outline of a story. Moments where dialogue could be written to characterize the party are written with the most dry unimaginative prose. The entire thing lacks any sense of drama, There is no sense of building tension or any sort of progression really. Some things are written Maybe as jokes but are delivered as if it's a complaint about something that it doesn't feel as though it's dry humor or anything like that. For example the warehouse (definitely not Amazon) somehow outsources its work? This is a functional impossibility so you want to assume that it's a joke, but everything around it reads as if it's serious. And what is the grand solution to this problem? diving into delusion of consumer media. Engaging in RPG combat and becoming a adventurer, pretending to be Chainsawman when you fight, And as always most importantly being angry and annoyed by everything that inconveniences you ever. The marketing title should be “KILL YOUR LANDLORD” Even the delivery of Ramona not liking talking to her mom is done so ham-fistedly that it's just immediately telling you everything about it. There's no drama, there's no tension, no build up. It might as well have been a text box that pops up and says “Ramona doesn't like talking to her mother because she's transphobic to her”. The last thing about writing is all of the conflict and the entire point of this just seems to be to complain about things. From anime nerd culture (But I'm definitely not one of those guys trust me), to NFTs, Crappy Landlords, trans-phobic mothers, and sucky jobs. After 10 Updates the gameplay remains largely the same. An exploit I used to make the game more bearable (Saving before every encounter) has been patched out since it could cause a potential softlock. If you like RPGs with combat scenarios which make you consider your party composition, careful planning and meaningful progression, then look elsewhere. It appears, to dissuade grinding, that the normal encounters scale to your level, making them MORE difficult than boss encounters. Whether you win an encounter or not is largely up to RNG, I assume this is to add to the systems of inconvenience, which themselves put you at a disadvantage, how does losing 50 Max HP randomly because you wanted to save before you faced a boss? In which you need to leave the dungeon and make your way back to your apartment and then to get back to the boss, travel through the dungeon again. You can just use your phone to call an uber to get teleported to the apartment instantly but that costs money and there are situations that make it so you cannot use your apartment regardless, such as when the gramophone blocks it as a result of not completing it’s quest making it so that you are unable to save as well as unable to make your characters “rested” The Artificial difficulty of someone who misunderstood what made Drakengard great, making their game “bad on purpose” because that’s the “art” of it. This is my charitable read of it. What we end up with is a game that is tedious, the gameplay loop doesn’t properly revolve around the systems unlike Decay as I mentioned earlier. So it feels needlessly tacked onto a game that just talks at you from the developer’s mouth. I may attempt to see the other content the game has to offer, but from what I have so far it doesn’t inspire much confidence about anything being of quality. (Since the posting of my last review the developer had claimed the entire thing was in bad faith, posted publicly to his followers complaining about the review several times and then acted on the criticism and advice I gave, as well as adding me to the credits? the original review will be posted below.)
Normally I'd want to get all the achievements a game has to offer first before putting out a review, but I feel like it'd be best to give a game as good as this a strong, positive review earlier rather than later. At the time of writing there's only three reviews, not including my own. So, hopefully, any amount of boosting will help give this game the attention it deserves! Short review: I Hate You, Please Suffer made me feel hated, and I definitely suffered, but I was also rewarded handsomely for perseverance despite the odds. This is a game where you're always on the back foot, and even when doing well, a few bad battle turns or choices can really throw you off. So long as you don't give up though, you *will* bounce back. Besides all that, there's a lot of memorable characters! People to like, people to dislike, people that make you think "what's up with this guy???". Everyone feels unique in this game, which I really love. The worldbuilding is strong and solid, and the themes and messages are powerful too. Overall, it's a very worthwhile experience! Very much worth the price. If this is all too intimidating, then I'd recommend trying the "I Hate You, Please Suffer - Basic" version to see if it's something that'd be up your alley. It'll give you some good practice for the Complete version too, though do know Complete is a bit tougher than Basic. Happy suffering! Side note: Don't let the graphics deter you! Personally, I really love how rough it looks. I find it inspiring, honestly. Perfectionism can be real tough to deal with, so it's nice that this game reassures that you don't need quality visuals to be a quality game. Even then, everything is visually legible, so it's not like it's a total mess either! I get the impression this game was made with a specific type of visual in mind, and it did it very well. Also, if you get stuck on anything, don't be shy to posting for help on this game's Discussions board. I've done it myself a few times and pretty much always got the info I needed to set me on the right path! (and even when I didn't, there were other posts that had the info I needed) Long review: I really appreciate this game for what it does, and highly recommend it to anyone willing to put in the time to persevering. It's a great experience and I feel that every hour I spent thus far has been worth it. This game loves to kick you while you're down, but as long as you don't get reckless, you can always get right back up and keep on fighting. It feels great to get more and more of a handle of things as you spend more and more time in the game, learning how to counter this and how to avoid that, and whatnot. I loved figuring out a reliable strategy to use and making backup plans on the fly to counter whatever status was throwing my main plan off, and making a comeback after scrambling to keep everyone alive felt fun too. Though, whenever I think about this game, my mind always goes to the characters first... I LOVE these guys. There being so many equally unique characters really made the experience great. Out of the 4 party characters, it's super hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to give Kylie the edge. Simply put, I agree with Ramona on her scariness being attractive! Everyone else is just as lovable and multi-layered as she is too, and the NPCs are all fun as well! There's also plenty of LGBT+ goodness going on and I love it a ton, especially with how open the game is about it. As a trans and bi lady, a lot of characters resonate with me, even if I don't share their experiences. They all feel like real people I could meet and talk with! There isn't too much else I can go into with the characters without it being spoilers, soooo consider that another reason to play the game - finding out what's going on with everyone! Also, really love the lore/worldbuilding here. It really feels like everything just makes sense in this pretty fantastical world. Of course there'd be Adventurers after all this magic stuff started happening! Of course watching anime gives you knife combat skills! Of course this major tragedy affected the entire state and influenced several major and minor events and characters! (Wondering what that one is about? Play the game to find out...!) I really enjoy the themes going on as well. A lot in this game is only possible through teamwork and fighting against the odds, even if that fighting isn't always *fighting* fighting. Not everything can be solved with a pretty bow on top, but that's okay. As long as you've got your friends by you, tackling the bad things in life won't be so scary. Not too sure if all that rambling made sense, but I hope the overall point I'm making is clear: This is a very good game, and I really think it's a worthwhile experience. Remember to persevere no matter what! It'll be real tough, but you've got this!! :)
peak girlboss material right here
Played through the demo and scitydreamer's previous game Slimes and adored both! The complete version is amazing so far; I love the writing. Can't wait to get to the new stuff!
worth it for the game over face alone more seriously this game is funny and has a pretty open feeling progression so far. I like poking around all the town areas, and everything feels framed in a way where I want to ride out my consequences.
i love this game. in short, it has really great dialogue and good sense of humor. i find myself wanting to talk with every character there is, trying not to leave any dialogue unread combat is well designed here. some fear games made with rpg maker but fear not with this one. there’s true effort here. enemies are interesting to engage with and is fun to decipher how to solve the combats. i really loved the music man more in depth now. some characters are very sweet? to put it somehow. you read what they say and their struggle and you fell they’re very relatable in a warm, kind way. there are raccoons in the game, you may appreciate them if you feel combat in jrpgs tend to be slow know that this is not the case. here lies the fastest combat i’ve ever seen. more about the combat: enemies will have the same level you have, so if you are level 5, enemies and bosses will also have level 5. i think this makes you not to worry that match about farming. i really like that if you are not sure still, you can found more reviews of this game in its basic version (or even play it for free). a lot of reviews there (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Paying rent has never been so interesting. Great RPG, Great characters
so far i'm finding the game to be inventive, funny, and heartbreaking in turns, playfully subverting classic rpg expectations in favor of idiosyncratic character-driven storytelling and creative combat systems. as a trans woman w plenty of experience struggling against unemployment, i've found ramona's character quite relatable, often painfully so. highly recommend for anyone who likes rpgs that dare to defy typical conventions.
I used to be broke, beat up raccoons in the dumpster, got attacked trying to go home, and lost good equipment on the bus. Now I make money fighting serial killers and monsters, have friends to back me up, my enemies are nothing, and have enough money to call a ride to take me anywhere. I still haven't paid my rent. Haven't beaten the game, but I feel like I'm close to getting one of the endings. All around a cool game, enjoy the openish nature of it and how you just have to deal with being dealt bad cards. The main party's likable, and I like their interactions with each other and learning more about them during spiritual healing and how their personalities show in their abilities during combat. The other characters are interesting too, and seeing adventurer groups aside your own go about their own lives as you progress through the game makes the world feel lively. Get it.
game is good. alternate route is good. good.
