One of the best written games I've ever played, and something that could ONLY be done as a game. I almost teared up at the end. Puzzles can be very tricky, but the story is worth it for that.
First off its a cool concept, however, there's too much going on. It is very confusing with vague/loose instructions. I didn't even make it through the first "mission" :(

It's easy to say that there are many good, fun games in this life, but hard to say that all of those have touched you. HypnoOS easily convinces you that what you are seeing is not a game, but your computer. R.I.P. the sequel. A demise announced on the starting edge of a o-25 summer sale.
I really wanted to like this game but I dunno man. The visuals are super on point and it's very clear a lot of effort and love went into this, but this final product really struggles to deliver a fun experience. Pretty much the moment you get to the second day the game's puzzles get infinitely more esoteric in a way that was kind of unapproachable as someone who was mostly just having a good time clicking around and reading the in fiction articles. Every time I thought I had an idea of what to do to progress I found that I was impossibly wrong. It was kind of a serious buzzkill to have the wind taken out of my sails as hard and fast as they were. Once I caved and started looking a a guide it just really dawned on me how I had absolutely no chance of clearing this. The fun just got sucked out so hard I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. That kind of thing would usually piss me off and that anger would carry me to the finish line but like...not here. I'm just kinda bummed out.
Introduction
Hypnospace Outlaw is a point and click adventure like no other. In it you explore a simulated version of the Internet in the 90s in the alternative reality.
Pros & Cons
Pros: + Sophisticated world that is fun to explore + Touching personal stories + Lots of secrets Cons: - Not always clear what to do - Might feel tedious at times
Story
As said before the game takes place in an alternative version of the 90s. But instead of the Internet people in this reality have something called Hypnospace, which they use by putting on some sci-fi headset prior to sleeping. You take on a role of a moderator, who’s job is to preserve that order, which means reporting harassment, copyright infringement and so on. While surfing the web in search of violations, you’ll learn a lot about its’ inhabitants, their daily lives and interactions with each other. I like how the game doesn’t try to put everything in your face, there’s a lot of subtlety and details that are easy to miss on the first look but once you notice, you feel super smart. There’s also a kind of overarching plot to the game, which I’d say isn’t as interesting, although it takes an interesting turn near the end.
Gameplay
It’s one of those games that are hard to categorize into a specific genre. It tries its best to simulate an old operating system with its own applications and even games. There are system settings, that allow you to change the look and feel of the OS. As you progress you can unlock more customization and unique features. The main game happens in the browser, which allows you to scroll and click through the personal web pages of the characters. There are also a search feature and bookmarking system which help you navigate through the game and solve its puzzles. It manages to evoke a sense of nostalgia even though I haven’t been on the internet in the 90s. Only problems I have with the gameplay is that some pages take a while to load, so it feels tedious at times. Especially that one time in the game when your goal isn’t very clear, so you just randomly click through pages you’ve already seen with hope of finding something new.
Graphics & Audio
It looks and feels just like you’d imagine from the store page. The graphics are very nostalgic and most of the websites you visit in the game, have their own soundtrack. You can also download different songs and make your own playlist.
Performance
Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 8GB, 32GB RAM. The game runs at 60 FPS without any problems.
Conclusion
Hypnospace Outlaw is a unique experience that I would recommend to those who like detective games and are fine with reading a little bit more than in a usual video game.
An amazing achievement, lost hours and hours just browsing this charming facsimile of a late 90s internet. So well thought out. So many rabbit holes to get lost in. You'll discover: what it is to be a true CoolPunk, the legend of Chowder Man, read fake music and videogame reviews for fake bands and games, learn some classic pizza jokes from ThatBrassyKid and his beef with Zane; all with a gigantic grin on your face.
Highly recommend to anyone who'd enjoy web surfing. Many of its elements are still typical in today's internet, so don't worry about the gap. +Unique hand-made websites, several times more than what the main story requires, fully satisfied my desire to explore; +Thematically fitting music and art brought the Hypnospace alive; +Vivid side character development & several touching stories;
- I reported a group of 7 yrs old fanarts of a cartoon character :(
PS: This game contains a few puzzles which might be too roundabout for non-native speakers, feel free to use the community guide. And don't forget shaking the mouse speeds up loading!
Hypnospace Outlaw is one of the best puzzle games I've played in a long while, but it is also so much more than that. Every piece of this game comes together to form a unique virtual world that is fun to explore. I felt like I was actually getting to know the different Hypnospace users through their web designs and all the changes you come across as time progresses in the story. You don't actually interact directly with the Hypnospace characters, but their silly personalities and interests are perfectly portrayed by the art, design elements, and especially the music in this game--I really loved the variety of music, and I think it added so much to the game. The puzzles start out simple and become quite difficult by the end. There were a few times where I felt the solutions were a bit opaque, but overall this game presented a welcome challenge. While you are solving the various cases presented to you, there are plenty of things to explore in the game that aren't related to the puzzles at all, but they fully fill in elements of the world, characters, and story.
