The most fearsome monsters of classic cinema are now common household pests. You're the new exterminator in town. Unlicensed, of course. Shoot, crush, burn, or mulch these physics-based ghouls, then collect the check.

The new game from the creator of A Dump in the Dark. Not surprising it turned out to be turd... 💩 Unclear objectives, clunky controls which are not explained and cannot be rebound. Playing this was one of the worst experience I had in recent memories and it's by far the worst game I played this year. This is an absolute mess of a game and it shouldn't have been released in such a terrible state. I warned the developer back in January this year to keep improving the game and fix the bugs and not release it in a barely playable state, he didn't. It's still full of bugs, the UI and menus are a mess, the controls don't work most of the time and the game run like absolute dogsh!t (framerate below 20fps in zombies map). Hunkenstein art style and graphics are decent and it looked interesting from the trailer unfortunately it runs and plays like crap.
Rating 1/10.
Set in a world where monsters live beside humans, players take on the titular role of a reanimated servant, undertaking jobs as a monster exterminator. Made using Unity, the game possesses a 1960s noir cinematic style and includes: basic gunplay, a few mini-games and adult related subjects such as: drug taking, simulated sex scenes and nudity

STATUS: Released but in need of a sizeable amount of QoL and some additional content. They can also happen in and kill the character while the character is having sex with a mummy - Could do with additional points of interest at missions and at the hub. More lore and an additional degree of narration would give the game a better flow and help better explain when to use equipment and the game world

MISSIONS & LEVELS: * Missions are fair but seem a little lite in number, with only 4x main story, 7x monster hunting jobs and 2x more repeatable jobs * Levels are fixed in nature, mostly small in size, but have some variety. Yet they are all devoid of enough interactive elements and lack depth - Access to the 2x repeatable missions are scarce, mainly presenting themselves while repelling monster attacks at the hub or while copulating with one of the characters nearby - A few areas on some maps were not properly blocked off and could lead to the character becoming stuck out-of-bounds. Those found were reported and fixed

COMBAT & GAMEPLAY: + Two mini-games offer a minor and fun change of pace to gameplay: sex scenes with QTE and running over zombies while driving back to base, after a mission * A fair variety of firearms and monster hunting equipment are accessible to take down targets. A few environmental elements can also help * Some variety of monsters to hunt with 7x types, but most seem to be a variation on the same theme * Levelling up boosts health and ammo carrying capacity, but nothing else. It is achieved through killing monsters, having sex and completing missions * Sex scenes are very suggestive in nature, but tame in what they show, simulating the act or showing less, depending on the setting in-game - What could be fun combat is let down by generic gunplay, a lack of variation in takedowns when using equipment and a lack of time to deal with hostiles that aggressively spawn and close to the character - Ragdoll and furniture physics seem flimsy a lot of the time. This causes some monsters to get trapped out of bounds or fly into the character causing them damage

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2846119841
OBSERVATIONS:

THE EXPERIENCE
ːfssnipeː Hkn's attempt to deliver a wacky styled, horror B-movie experience with a subtle dose of comedy and elements of erotica succeeds, but not completely. ːfssnipeː The ambience generated by its cinematic noir style is probably its best asset if you like that sort of thing. Very reminiscent of 1960s black and white matinees. Together with decent visuals and some great voice-acting, it definitely provides a convincing setting ːfssnipeː The story is surprisingly good, if a little short. It succeeds in being the foundation of interest. Its just a shame there isn't a little more lore spread throughout the main game and especially its finale. ːfssnipeː Gunplay was fair but rudimentary. It never seemed convincing enough because of a multitude of factors. The nature of monsters was fine, but their frequency and proximity of spawn made for overly frenzied combat. ːfssnipeː Monster speed relative to the character made using the hunters equipment a cumbersome proposition. They felt underused with not enough time to set them up. While there were problems even picking them up. The worst example was the cage where the bars would break apart, making it practically useless. ːfssnipeː The zombie road-kill and sex mini-games both provide some welcome light relief and serve to add to the game in their own brief way. ːfssnipeː The ending (at least the one I played) was a nice read, but it's abrupt ending demonstrates that Hkn is clearly unfinished. There are no end titles and its last action suggests that more content was planned, which given the tremendous twist to the story would have been amazing.
BALANCE vs DIFFICULTY
ːfssnipeː With the game having one difficulty, most of it comes a lack of clear indicators or pointers which require a little out-of-the-box thinking and trial and error.
REPLAYABILITY vs LONGEVITY
ːfssnipeː Very few dynamic elements mean that while missions can be replayed they tend to play out more or less the same. The two re-occurring missions are identical in every way and more of these would be welcome. ːfssnipeː The game really needs a couple of main story/mission branches to add some replayability and some longevity. There are two main endings requiring a full replay to try the other possible finale. As a creative piece of work it is as engaging to play, as it is interesting to look at and listen to. The story is strong and the game is certainly playable, but it has issues which detract from the experience it delivers. Released in an unfinished state, with a price that for its current content is too high. Therefore I feel unable to recommend Hkn to the average gamer. Currently it only warrants a MAYBE consideration unless those interested have the patience to navigate its faults. ** To the dev, I really liked the game and if you manage to address the issues mentioned I will gladly replay it and update my rating **
Thank you for reading. | Follow my curator here.
every single negative review is from an idiot who cannot comprenhend somthing unless it is spoonfed to their feeble brains this is one of the best games i have ever played and it is repulsive and disgusting that Oubliette games are not well known the public should be ashamed of themselves
When it tells you to stream at your own risk, it really means stream at your own risk
Hunkenstein is a super janky, immature, and unpolished game. HOWEVER. I genuinely found the wild concept, plot, and connections to some strange story Oubliette has in the background of their stuff to carry it pretty heavy. It needs a lot of QoL and features but it's pretty clear the dev is improving from stuff they've shown off before. If you can appreciate odd, sincere experiences and get a laugh out of some toilet humor i'd say check it out some!
Strange experience. Fight monsters in the black-white world. + Atmosphere, audio dialogues - Gameplay, story, missions, objectives
Deep lore. Unique experience of figuring out a broken game. Pressing random buttons on the keyboard actually does something in-game. Every mission feels like a different game. The gameplay is more like a meta-puzzle than anything strictly comparable, random ♥♥♥♥ happens all the time, both intentional and not, same goes for Dump in The Dark. Amazing series. Making love to wart-infested witches.
I don't know man, I see the potential for a good game here, but the game overall is not even close to polished. There's not even a sensitivity slider for the camera, the FPS is all over the place, the visibility ain't good at all, the only time I could see things properly was when the "you can see colors now" power up was activated, and that was like, 20 minutes of gameplay. I'll keep waiting for some updates and maybe give it another chance at a later date but for now I can't recommend it due to a giant list of lacking QoL features.
Hunkenstein is the second game from Oubliette (the first being Dump in the Dark), and it continues the trend of being a bizarre trip through a filth-laden, demented world. Shifting the focus from bubble-butt battles and more towards man-meat massacres, you take on the role of Jack, a creature made of the most perfect specimens humanity once had to offer. Made to serve your creator/mistress in any way she sees fit, you are sent on missions of love and war across a monster-infested wasteland, with each encounter leaving you coated in your enemies' blood, or you and your lover's fluids. Though worry not, you are not without means of defense/offense! Seek those around you for such tools of continued existence. In exchange for nigh-worthless scraps of paper, they will happily provide you with an orchestra's worth of deathly instruments. The various different faces and names you come across in this journey will not easily be forgotten, regardless of how hard you try to. Such lovely individuals really make you feel at home in this forsaken hellscape as they offer insight, aid, and companionship throughout your tortuous existence. The trip you go on does not lack substance either. Your trials and tribulations serve great purpose, and the story you are offered across both games is surprisingly well written and enthralling. I yearn for more of it, as it has already sunken its literary claws deep within my soft tissue. Also! While some may say the physics bugs and other general jankiness negatively impacts the game, I feel they instead enhance the experience. It makes sense that in the horrifically twisted universe of which this game takes place, reality itself would lash out at all those who inhabit it. Disobeying any natural laws or logic that once governed it, the sentient cosmos writhes and thrashes about out of either malice, or suffering. My praise for this title, this series, and its creator(s) is truly endless. I cannot recommend this game and its predecessor enough, though it saddens me to know that so few souls will be brave enough to venture within its fold, and even fewer will make it through to the other side. Do it. Risk your being and delve deep. Emerge a changed individual, either for better or for worse.
A very bizarre, comedic first-person shooter about a reanimated macho man that has to exterminate creatures for his horny master, who is a mad scientist, and collect money and steal valuable research equipment for her to conduct the ultimate experience. This game is glitchy, sometimes confusing but is very much a trial and error game. You have an arsenal of interesting weapons, you're best friend in his previous life is now a mechanical pig and you get to have intercourse with all the women in the small town to gain exp. Very short if you know what to do and was a good laugh. Very stupid but original.
