I've been playing this game on the Steam deck and it feels a perfect fit for this platform. The game plays very much like a more interactive 'choose your own adventure' and suits settling yourself down with a cup of tea; on the sofa in my case. On the Steam deck it uses the mouse and keyboard configuration by default and no tweaking is needed. The size of the main text can be changed to suit which I appreciate although the text on the options given to select from remains the same which is small though manageable. In-game, there is a strong feeling of time and place. It looks good with effective use of appropriate music, photographs and illustrations. The mechanics of the game work well as you make your choices at various points and see how you're affected. As yet, I've only been playing one of the three characters but so far it all feels very Lovecraftian as the detailed plot develops; I'm a big fan of the Cthulhu mythos. I'm not sure where it will go and I'm looking forward to finding out how all three stories interplay with and affect one another. Edit: I've already made some choices I'm not sure about; it will be interesting to play through a number of times to see how different decisions play out I'd recommend it to fans of HPL and the Cthulhu mythos, tabletop roleplaying games (it has a feel of a single player roleplaying scenario), and immersive story telling. It certainly seems to be successful at what it's attempting to do.
I absolutely love this game, everything from story, to the visuals, to the unique characters. I love that each character has a tailor made interface that matches their personalities. The way everything is described is also a fun touch, especially character stats and relationships. If you love a good lovecraftian flavor this game is for you. The only downside is the bugs, it's understandable with it being a new game but there is definitely a need for patches. The game keeps breaking and it makes for a bit of chore to get back where I was. This is only negative for me thus far worth noting. That being said, I still I recommend this game. With a few patches this game will up there as one my personal favorites. This game needs more attention!
HPL: Nyarlathotep Rising reminds me of the time when computer games were the evolutionary successor to pen and paper RPGs. Instead of just being a retro exercise, Nyarlathotep Rising brings a literary sensibility to the text adventure game. You can play as one of three characters, but instead of running a new character through the same story, you see the same events through a different perspective. And even, the sound design and visual aesthetics also change to reflect the different characters' outlook and perspective. Finally, the writer and developer of HPL know and understand the Lovecraft mythos, you will not find any cute Cthulhu's or tentacle jokes here. It's the real thing. That being said, this is a text adventure, and the words have to carry the action. It may be my modern demand for dopamine feedback but it's tempting to click through the game when there are longer passages of text with no choice to make. And since the game is essentially your gamemaster, it could do a better job of hinting at the consequences of some of your choices. Minor flaws aside, I hope this is successful enough for developers return to the mythos with another entry in the series.
Not really worth the price. Spuns a lot of references, but the plot is just so generic CoC. No meaningful decisions except standard: defy / sacrifice / save the damsel. A lot of smokescreen references to mythos tomes, creatures etc., but none of it gets into the gameplay. Stats play no role. Relations play no role. Everything boil down just to final choices, but nothing interesting on the chapters 1-5, but the fluff-filling, meaningless flashbacks. It is a shame, because I really wanted to like this one.
Love it. Good story, and difficult to succeed. Maybe a tad over-priced for the game style, but it has some depth to it, options-wise. I actually kind of like that it limits you to one game at a time with no saves to work, just tracks progress for one game/character at a a time, starting another game wipes your previous progress. And while it is somewhat forgiving when you finally die, allowing you to pick up again with narrowed choices forward, I find that it's too late to avoid the same fate fairly immediately and have to start over again for my two runs through it so far. So it may be a bit before I figure out how to ever 'succeed' at anything near the actual end-game. No idea how close I've come to the end before dying. About to start my third run at it. Not bored yet.
I like this game but December update made it unplayable. There are multiple pages with missing text and some character names are also just lines of code, which makes it impossible to follow the story. I will update my review if game is fixed, but now I can't recommend it to anyone.
J'ai fait le Kickstarter, et j'ai déboursé 89€ pour des contreparties physiques que j'attend toujours. Le jeu était censé être en VF. J'ai contacté l'éditeur qui fait la sourde oreille.
Beautifully written and interesting. Definitely captures the Lovecraft atmosphere and possibility of breaking down along the way. Decisions feel meaningful but also not always predictable. Fascinating.
I bought in discount and had to refund. I posted on a related Discussions post about this so I will paste here as it’s relevant to potential customers and the devs. Do not buy until this is fixed! You will be missing a lot of the game bc of an update! “ I thought that coded text was a way to get replayability. Like once you discover something or make a choice when you come around to it again it would display the text. I went from thinking it was an error to convincing myself it was game design. You are all saying this is a bug?? Ugh??!!! Edit: I just watched clips of three YouTube videos of others playing it from 1 yr ago and did not see any of those weird code-like text pages. Answered my own question, but leaving what I said there for anyone else who stumbles into it to know they're not alone. Game Dev: I really want to play and enjoy your game. I was actually really enjoying my short time with it when I didn’t know the errors in text were in fact errors. I’m playing only on Steam Deck bc I only have a work PC, not a personal one. Please fix bc I will have to refund as it’s not in a playable state currently.”
