Slick sci-fi rogue-lite. Great for some arcade action fun that rewards continued playthroughs as you upgrade your ships. The ability drops add some cool flavor to each run.
An Interesting Take on a Roguelite Twin Stick
Would you rather watch than read? Me too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN1NA67Y8uc Hovership Havoc does a lot of things right. It has quick, intense battles and fluid controls. It gets you into the action quick and there is very little downtime. The upgrades happen quickly and can change the flow and pace of your strategy. They have multiple ships that will all play and upgrade differently. With so many reasons why the game is fun, why does it kind of fail to engage with me? One of the problems is the projectiles. The projectiles on screen are sometimes so tough to see that you feel like you're taking damage for no reason. The ships are big and bulky (in tiny arenas) and getting around enemies without taking damage is often an almost impossibility. Many of the weapon powerups you can get kind of fail to impress (I'm looking at you, ship bombing run!). It's a well made game but has issues keeping my attention for too much longer than a short playthrough of it. tl;dr - A well made and fun game for an hour. If it was on sale, definitely think about picking it up. An unboxing for video games! I do these for people who hate reading and want to see the gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN1NA67Y8uc Join the Curator group for more reviews like this: Sonoket's Lost Games EDIT: The dev replied to my YT video and said they adjusted BOTH points of feedback I had. The size of the projectiles AND the length of invulnerability of the ship when you dash. Consider me amazed. This game is now absolutely worth your money with the way the dev is supporting it. Top notch.
"Hovership Havoc is...... TOUGH (all caps fully intentional) and if you're looking for a challenge - this is it!" Hovership Havoc is a sci-fi-themed twin-stick shooter that puts a ton of emphasis on your ability to "kite" your enemies, and sometimes their bullets, around, while avoiding enemy projectiles or lasers, obstacles that will trap your ship into a corner, and crashing into enemy robots or turrets. In fact, I'd say kiting and grouping up loosely spread-out enemies into a tight bunch is a particularly useful skill to have especially if you play as the "shotgun-like" hovership, Pulse Cannon, since due to its low shot rate and high risk of weapon overheat, you'll want to make every shot count. Fyi, the game features 4 different hoverships, each offering a unique feel and hence, gameplay. Your play style will definitely need to change depending on the type of hovership you play as. Generally, you'll also want to play the game NOT like a typical space arcade shooter where you'll basically have your left mouse button pressed throughout a game - the overheat issue is real and can literally get your ship destroyed. The game even has 30 different, randomly-generated abilities in which you can only equip 2, Each level usually has 1 new ability that you can pick up and then assign to either your Q or E key, and you'll need to really decide which abilities to keep and which ones to replace when something better comes along. Of course, you'll also be facing quite a variety of enemies, ranging from stationary turrets to numerous robots and ships of a myriad of sizes and abilities, forcing you to change and adapt your play style and strategy as these enemies are spawned into the map. That's not even including certain barriers and obstacles on the map you'll be playing on that seem to be so well-positioned to "lull" your ship into a tight spot where every avenue of escape you may have are gradually being closed up by the incoming army of robots. By the way, if your ship is destroyed, there is no do-overs like in typical space shooters where you may have up to 3 lives per playthrough (or more/less), hence earning the game the label of being "roguelite". However, note that the game does seem to have a few "preset" maps that it chooses from rather than procedurally generate a new one every time you cleared a map. This explains why I've encountered several very familiar maps in my multiple playthroughs, where the enemy spawning positions and order are at least 90% similar. Hovership Havoc also has a rather satisfying progression system where every level up will grant you a limited number of points that you then invest into various stats whether it is to get higher weapon damage or increasing your movement speed. This is good and all, but here's the really interesting part... you can actually reset any of your stats to return the invested points just to reinvest them into something else that complements your play style more. Plus, if you happen to level up during a game, you'll get a nice full heal, giving your hovership a new lease on durability just so you can clear even more rooms within a single run. As you progress, you may find certain "rooms" easier to clear, but generally, the game does scale up the enemies' difficulty as you advance, challenging you every step of the way as you try to cap out each of your ship's upgrades. P/S: Hovership Havoc touts of having cool third-person boss battles but I've yet to encounter a boss in this game so I can't really comment on that, except that I expect boss fights to be really, really awesome :)
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgVm8XRNBDQ Not a pro at this type of games but I'd like to think that I've improved quite a bit by the time the video reaches its midway point (at around the 36:53 mark). Still made some mistakes though - hey, I'm not flawless :)
TL;DR? Here are the Pros and Cons
Pros + Challenging gameplay with well-varied enemies that scale with your ship as you level up + A flexible progression system that's separate for each of the 4 types of hoverships, guaranteeing plenty of replay value + Cool electronic music, if you're into that kid of music. + Epic, third-person boss fights + 30 different types of ship abilities, out of which you can only equip 2... which ones you get are entirely random. + Nice list of stats for players who are into those Cons - Maybe this is just me but I find that the electronic droning sound that plays whenever you move your hovership quite unnecessary and annoying. - Rather high skill ceiling even for players who have played twin-stick shooters pretty competently before. Movement of your ship takes a bit of getting used to as well (WASD+mouse). I guess you can consider these as part of the "challenge".
Tips
Even though I'm not an expert player, I did pick up a few quick tips from my playthroughs that I find incredibly useful * Turrets can be destroyed and should be destroyed as fast as you can, especially those turrets with rockets and shields... these are super annoying. * In fact, I'd suggest taking out anything that shoots back at you first. You can kite the others in the meantime... just take note the obstacles and don't back yourself into a corner!
Overall
If you're up for a challenge and you enjoy a solid, roguelite twin-stick shooter/bullet-hell game with a cool sci-fi theme, Hovership Havoc will definitely help you scratch that itch! The game has a great and very flexible progression system for each of the 4 different types of hoverships, allowing you to invest and reinvest your points into stats as necessary. Plus, and this is probably the most impressive thing out of all of these, the game was developed by a single developer from scratch! This is quite a simple game but it's well made and quite worth the cost. It's very good if you want to play something for half an hour without becoming too involved in anything complex. The physics simulation is quite good enough and it's easy to begin playing within a minute or two.

On the edit controls screen, inputs were still affecting the game, as though the controls screen were an overlay and the game were running normally underneath it.
The calibrate dialog in edit controls did not respond to any close inputs, forcing an alt-f4 to get out.
When picking up an active ability, you select which of two buttons to put it on. If you have something there, it will just replace it, even if your other slot was empty.
Your ship constantly makes very annoying noise as it moves. Playing the game is like listening to someone vacuuming carpet in a small space. Forever. Meanwhile, many enemies make a getting-hit noise like smacking two wrenches together.
The game play and design don't seem to reach for a higher standard, either. Levels are simple and repetitive, and enemies, while they aren't terrible, are basic and don't feel like they contribute to variation, so the main change you have to look forward to is your two active abilities, which are randomly found, and mostly awful.
Level edges and object geometry lack visual clarity but are highly detailed for collision, meaning you can catch a little tip of your ship on a nook and get stopped flat, even when it doesn't look like it would matter or you can barely see the difference. Your ship, by the way, is huge.
The third-person shooter sections are just not well built and don't add. Better to build one kind of game well than two kinds badly.
Metaprogress is present and strictly power/stats, not interest/options. In other words, your ship is sluggish and poor until you grind up its stats, but nothing will change about the game.
Honestly, between the vacuum droning and the painfully awful dash, I might have to call it a pass, but the amateurishness of everything does not help carry the game either, and in the end, it just feels kind of bad. You can see some potential, but it didn't get there.
I'm hooked! This is a great twin stick shooter game with a nice challenge element. Tons of ship secondary weapons keep each play through fresh, and the permanent ship upgrades keep you trying to bulk up your favorite ship! This game reminds me a lot of classic arcade games of the type, almost makes me want to go out and buy an arcade pad to play it! The music in the game is also fantastic. All around I would definitely recommend this game!
Tried this game, opened it up, and that's about it. Press any button or key to start and it will not let me enter the game. Had to plan for a backup game for my stream. A bug maybe? *Update* After working with the Developer, who is super amazing and helpful, we have gotten past the issue of not being able to enter the game. Will update this review when Game is played more"
It may look nice and dynamic but on the end of the day, what makes this game unpleasant are:

Random hit boxes; sometimes you hit the target, sometimes it is a miss, sometimes you must aim near the enemy and not at it.
Indistinct map design; there are indestructible structures on maps that are sometimes hard to spot because of its colour similar as background, in the end you end up blocked by one of it when hordes of enemies approach.
Strange rogue like system; starting new game makes you lose experience on all of 4 ships.
Shift+tab may result in breaking the game; simply your ship disappear.
Boss fights; point of view changes, making the game harder. Your advantage of long range weapons makes no sense because you have to stand very close to the boss to make damage.
After death it is possible to lose your upgrade disposals, having you to choose it again (probably wrong and learning what you should improve useless).
Level select feature; starting from a level other than the first, may save your time on grinding lower lvls, but result in not having any perk or random upgrades. And once selecting lower level deleted my progress.
Enemy drops; most of the time it's perfectly fine, but when you stand on the place, where in next half second will appear laser turret or rocket tank, it is almost impossible to avoid hard damage.
In this video I take a look at Hovership Havoc a twin stick shooter in a hover ship. This one is a fun little twin stick shooter where you need to pilot your hover ship through different levels and engage in Boss battles. Initially it's quite hard but each attempt earns skill points for the ship you have chosen and as it levels up you can upgrade it to get further in the game. There are four ships to choose from. It's very well made and has great graphics. Quite a fun game and worth taking a look at. I played it with a K.B. and mouse and it was great. Fast paced, colorful, and exciting. Randomized upgrades as well as player led progression. This game is really fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNFDwvymd7M
