About
In Hotel 188, there are no monsters chasing you or cheap jumpscares. The fear comes from somewhere else: the atmosphere, the silence, the sound of your own footsteps… and that constant feeling that something doesn’t quite fit.
You wake up in a place you don’t recognize. Time doesn’t move forward, the rooms feel the same but different each time you return to them, and the only path is forward... even though you have no idea where “forward” is. Soon enough, disorientation becomes part of the journey. You start to get lost, doubt yourself, and wonder if you should keep playing or take a break. This is the real experience of the Backrooms. It’s not just about looking, it’s about feeling it deep inside.
Hotel 188 is not just about walking aimlessly. Along the way, you’ll find small puzzles that aren’t just there for decoration. They are part of the world, integrated into the environment, forcing you to think, go back, and observe more than you thought you needed. They’re not impossible, but they are designed to get under your skin, just when you thought you understood what was going on.
Every sound, every flickering light, every room that seems the same but isn’t… everything is crafted to make you feel that this “hotel” has a life of its own. And the worst part is, you don’t know if it wants you to leave… or stay.
Hotel 188 is for those who seek more than just a typical horror game. It’s for those who want to experience the true anxiety of the Backrooms, get lost in them, get frustrated, and still keep exploring. Because you know that somewhere in this maze, there’s an exit… or is there?

I'm a big fan of the backrooms game genre and have played a lot of them. This one, is not quite above par. Pros: * Good sound * No crash bugs or lighting bugs Cons: * No context to the exploration * Feels like a hastily made videogame with few details * Level design is meh, just doesn't feel compelling For the same thing but better, try POOLS, Lost Waterpark, Anemoiapolis, or The Complex:Expedition
A fun little Backrooms-like adventure with some creative level design and a few good puzzles. Has some sound problems but they aren't significant enough to ruin the atmosphere.
It's good. A few jump scares. No real entities that chase you, nothing happens that results in a game over or restart or anything. I don't think "dying" is even possible in this one. I like that it has a bit more of a focus on puzzles compared to some other games. So, as much as I like walking sims, this was a nice change of pace. A lot of other backrooms games lean really hard into the poolrooms, and I like that this one doesn't as much. Haven't seen many that focus as much on 188. Level 3 in the game is an 8-stage anomaly hunt. Heads up if that isn't your thing. It wasn't terribly difficult, and there's a good guide available here on Steam. The environment overall felt a bit small, and I didn't really get a feeling of being lost in a large liminal space like I do with other games. But the game otherwise had enough that this wasn't a big deal for me. I also don't like that there's no way to save progress. There is a level select, but I haven't checked if it persists between playthroughs. Overall I recommend it for the good design, lack of traditional entities, and somewhat different take on the concept. Well worth the price ($6 full price as of this review).
I enjoyed this game, one of the better Liminal Space games of 2026. Hope to see more from the devs.
I hope you know that certain images and aspects of this game is getting added to the official fandom 188 rewrite. The visuals of this game are insane!
I really love liminal games... however this game didnt really hit the spot for me. Theres some cool ideas and enviroments in the game but most of thouse are literally at the very very end. I liked the initial idea of a liminal hotel but i dunno. Personally it really didnt hit me much. The puzzles are also very meh and can sometimes be extremly tiresome. My main offender is the one where you have to activate lampposts and good luck if you miss a single one. A lot of my gametime of takeing my time with this game and replaying it for the achievments were just the lamppost searching. Theres also a Spot the anomaly segment wich dragged on for extremly long in the game where i want to explore, that can also be extremly buggy and dosnt work proper half the time that forced me to restart the game wich... leads me to my biggest offender in this game. YOU CANNOT SAVE YOUR PROGRESS!!! WHYYY??? The thing is... there IS a chapter select at these monitors but you can only use it after you finished the section. It dosnt save after you reboot the game and you have to play fom the beginning. However the game only barely 6 euro wich is allright i guess but i really cant recommend it if they dont at the very least fix thier save system. And even them im not too sure tbh. If youre a hardcore fan of liminal things and you dont mind some meh segments to get to the few cool things buy it. The best parts are the beginning and end but wait for a steam sale.
