Hillshade Farm

Hillshade Farm is a very enjoyable game where you initially work through quests as you develop your farm. Even though there is a quest system in place you still have the flexibility to build and upgrade your farm as you like as you progress through the knowledge tree and you unlock the additional skills needed when you level up. Unfortunately the initial negative reviews were from players that did not take the time to learn the game or were not patient enough to allow the DEV time to work through the initial issues as the surfaced from the EA release. - The games continues to develop further and has a huge potential for additional content. - One of the things that stand out is that you are forever busy taking care of and working on your farm, it doesn't feel like a grind as you progress. - Since this is an EA game, the thing that stands out the most is that when glitches or ideas surface from the player base, the DEV is all over them and is constantly working on and releasing patches which will put this game ahead of the rest in the future. - The forums are very active to include multiple interactions from players that are extremely helpful. Give this game a try, well worth the $$ spent.

This game is what I've been waiting for, for such a long time. A farming game with no pressures but quests that keep your interest in the game. There are some things for the developer to work on, however, the developer is responsive to any issues and the game, so far, has had daily updates. I cant wait to see what the future holds for this game.

I decided to purchase this game despite the mixed reviews for 2 reasons: 1. I often get addicted to games like this that bring me peace, so being constrained by an early access snippet was not in my stars. 2. I always try to support game developers, especially if there are mixed reviews on their games - hoping the extra cash flow will redirect them to focus on areas of the game that need help. I invested 9 straight hours into this game in a single sitting before writing this review. The game itself is beautifully designed. The music is relaxing and calming and if you've ever dealt with anxiety, you understand why this is a big deal. = ) For the most part, I love the build up to animals by crop farming, making use of the tree of knowledge to unlock fruits, vegetables, animal habitats and farming tools. As a 4th generation farmer myself, I can appreciate starting with crops even if it isn't realistic. It would be nice if you could choose the route you want to play: crop farmer or animal farmer and develop the gameplay from there. From a player perspective, aside from being directed by quests, there is no education at all as to how to feed your animals. I went through 4 cows and 5 chickens before I learned that I would need to harvest wheat and corn and then use the table in the barn to produce "animal feed." I still think this feed should be able to be purchased at the animal market for anyone who is still learning. It sucks to lose animals and be out that money because there's no direction built into the game. Tips are a big deal when you are learning the game and I was at least 3 hours in before I learned that "E" will rotate whatever you're holding. That would have been helpful to know when I was working on the fencing. It would also be nice to have snap guides so your fence-line doesn't look like an S when you're done. I experienced numerous bugs during gameplay that eventually made it impossible to play any further with the first being the "frozen" bug - when you're attempting to move something and the menu completely freezes, you can't escape out or anything. I had to CTRL ALT DEL several times just to get un-stuck from a piece of fencing. "Reset pet" would be another great addition as my puppy got hung up on the corner of my porch multiple times and I had to hard reset and relaunch the game to get him unglued. The second, and most frustrating bug occurs at the animal market, and it's a force close. My game closed numerous times in a row with me just trying to leave the animal market. I even tried hitting escape and returning my player to the farm that way, but the moment I opened the front door of the house, it crashed again. This is unacceptable. One crash is irritating but multiples in a row makes it completely unplayable. This game needs some serious polishing before I'd consider playing/streaming it again. The above is not the entire list, but the bullet points. Hopefully this helps steer people clear from spending the money.

I played for 8 hours just to give this a chance. Its so choppy and jerky when you move. There is no sensitivity control for anything. There is no tutorial on basic things. And last of all, I was out in the truck and ran into a rock due to the driving controls lacking. It got stuck on a rock and I tried to respawn. It didnt respawn the truck, but the truck disappeared and left my character in midair. I had 2 saves befor that and I went to reload off one of them. When I reloaded all my stuff I had done was still there BUT MY QUESTS WERE GONE and making me start over, but you cant. This game needs A TON of improvement bevore I will play it again. I play a mass amount of farming games and usually can deal with a few bugs. This game just wasted 8 hours of my day and left me feeling bad because I really want to play it.

I bought this game fully knowing there is a probably long early access road ahead. This is ok for me, I enjoy bug hunting and making suggestions to improve the game play and QOL. With that being said, I enjoy the game, I want to play more and unlock more improvements for my farm. The concept is really cool, the art style is really nice. This game is made by a solo dev with a big dream and a passion project. I want to see it get better and succeed. The patches come in quick and feedback and very well received. For potential players that lack patience, it's ok to wait for more improvements and content. Early access is not for everyone and that's ok.

Honestly love this game. I have hours invested into it. I do recommend this to anyone looking for a game to live out your homesteading dreams. Please understand the game is new, and still buggy but the improvements are significant already from first release. The developer is super responsive and on top of any bugs and offering fixes for them. This will be a really phenomenal game once its finished. I cant wait to see what comes of the finished game!!

For a early access released game if has come a long way from the demo. The dev is helping fixes the bugs and issues in a timely manner. I cant wait to see what else the dev comes out with. Also a perk the community is extremely helpful.

This game is beautiful and lots of fun. It has so much potential to become so much more as well. Whenever any bugs pop up the Dev gets right on it and usually has it fixed within the day. I'm really loving it! Thank you for a game that's really worth playing.

The game needs refinement and polish but overall this is a great and fun game. I have only had it installed a few days and many things have been fixed and changed for the better. There is already so many things to do in the game and potential for much more. The developer or development team appears to be working around the clock because fixes are happening continuously.
