Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/QhDQnivmNlY This game has been consistently updated since release in Early Access, plus it's from Charm Games, a VR dev with a history of not missing (Form, Twilight Path, Burn it with Fire VR). So there's good reason to believe that this game will continue to be supported and improved. However, fair warning: with Steam Early Access you never really know and you're always taking a chance by buying an EA game. The good news is that the price was reduced to $11.99 USD and I bought this game and I think the price matches the value currently with the latest build (update 15). I had fun playing this game. It's a rogue-like arena combat game with a SUPERHOT time slow mechanic. Basically, whenever you move, enemies move. This game is melee and magic based. So you'll be swinging your magic wand which turns into a sword when swinging, as well as casting spells and ultimates. Currently, you have fire, lighting, and ice spell variations available. You pick different paths on a board with varying degrees of difficulties, as well as different objectives. Game is running on the Unreal Engine 5.1. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps, but I did notice some frame rate drops, and my game did crash once during my 1.4 hours on record. You have full locomotion, along with smooth or snap turning available. You can technically play seated, but I was often too low to the ground when I did that so I ended up standing. I had fun playing this game. However, it does need a bit more variety as far as runs. The game has different environmental dangers and enemies. It's basically almost a bullet hell type game with all the projectiles from exploding meteorites, enemy spells, archers, and exploding enemies. You can dash and also parry the projectiles. You can also parry enemy attacks and trigger your ultimate to quickly kill off a huge swarm. You can get different abilities from Tarot cards or health potions. However, there isn't enough variety within these and you'll quickly see repeats. Overall, it's a nice start to early access. The core gameplay loop is fun. It just needs more variety. I would like to see different classes such as archers or a shield disc character type (disc can be used as shield or thrown) or a demolition type character (throw grenades). Rate 7/10. It's leagues better than Cold VR.
I bought this game! V1.1 update: So this game is sadly still not one I can recommend to anyone. The main gameplay is "Hold trigger, swing sword" and that is pretty much it, which is quite a shame because swinging your arms back and forth constantly for the entire duration of your run is exhausting. The game has made some improvements since I last played it. There are multiple types of spells now that have some unique effects as well as being visually distinct which is really nice. But aside from that, it is just swinging your sword back and forth or up and down constantly, which is not exactly exhilarating gameplay if you ask me. Inital EA release: I'm sorry but this game is too EA for it to be worth more than a couple bucks at most. It's an alpha or proof of concept, nothing more. 1 weapon that is frustrating to use since the blade retracts too often, 1 lightning spell with your hands that is difficult to aim, 1 lightning spell fpr your wand same story and air slashes that destroy anything and anyone in your path. The levels look the same, enemies can be difficult to see due to the visuals, there's only like 6 upgrades that reset every level and 0 permanent upgrades as of writing this despite a loading screen telling you that you can buy them. There's barely any content, no replayability (the 6 upgrades aren't even interesting), annoying to pull off special moves, there's just nothing here outsude of great visuals. There's also this Superhot "time moves when you do" idea, but it doesn't feel like it fits and does not feel like it has any reason to be here other than "slowmo cool", which is a shame because slow-mo can be really cool and fun like in B&S This game needed more time before releasing into EA. More abilities, actually interesting upgrades and permanent progression as well as more polish for the stuff that is here. Despite my overwhelmingly negative review so far, I do see potential here. Like I said the game looks great, the combat can be pretty fun and the hand lightning spell can throw an enemy which is really satisfying. The air slashes are a bit finnicky but also quite fun to dismember enemies with, however, these things don't save this game due to a lack of everything. While I would say "keep an eye out for this game", I am quite worried. Like I said, there's not much here, and they plan to release in like half a year (according to the EA box). I doubt that is enough time for this game to realize its true potential. For now, I must say that this game is not worth the price they ask for it, but I hope some day this game will be bigger and better than anyone could expect and despite my harsh criticisms, I do wish the devs the best of luck :D If any big updates happen, I will update this review if I have time. Update 06/12/2024 (DD/MM/YY): So the new update removes the old starting hub area and gives us a new one. The old map selection is now changed into a generic pick 1 of 3 paths type thing but with a tabletop-esque implementation. Not bad, not unique, it's fine. The temporary upgrades now also last between battles but are significantly harder to get. They now also have an npc standing next to the selection screen, but is doing an A-pose, super immersive. They removed the area that showed the player how special moves worked so good luck finding that out now. They also removed Strixwind, the guy who is supposed to give you permanent upgrades. At this point it is just false advertising, they state in the EA: "Character Progression v1: Upgrade your core stats and abilities", which is literally not possible. If, for some reason, you still are going to buy and play this game, downgrade to the version that came before this one, since it was much more fun and much better (even though I know that doesn't say a whole lot for this game). The new version is just stripped down and even worse.
UPDATE: the developer reached out and already immediately had an update that fixed the situation. The developers seem to be very in tune with their community and this game is truly a lot of fun. You cannot beat this game at this price point. So this game I think has a lot of potential but they did something in the beginning they want you to do a whole grip button and punch with magic points but they take your magic points away and anything you try you can't get past so I can't leave the tutorial is there anybody out there that can help
Awesome game! The mechanics are super fluid and easy to understand, very satisfying when you can combo it all together. There's tons of replayability with the way the campaign is set up, different spells and abilities, mix and match, etc. The graphics are slick too, neat environments, weapons effects and enemy designs. Even the soundtrack is rad - I had it running in the background, just vibing. Love the ragdolls too, and the slo mo.
I'm enjoying this- quite addictive ! i must remember that time slows when your slow. I'm certainly dying a lot! Looking forward to see how this game progresses ! Easy recommend from me!
Sick to death, very active. Reminds me a bit of that early VR game Holopoint, where you had to dodge arrows and shoot targets. Same sort of physical movement is required here, only this time, it's packaged in an action roguelike. Great gameplay, great visuals. I'm sad this hasn't caught on a bit harder! PCVR space is so slow nowadays... here's hoping to more success for this dope title
Pretty fun game! Kind of like if you take the timing of super hot's combat and give the player spells, blades and power ups. The combat can be a lot of fun although sometimes it's easy to have enemies sneak up behind you. I got to the end guy and got my butt kicked, but it's a rouge so death and runs are part of the formula.
This indie VR roguelite is a hidden gem. I did not expect such a high level of quality for the price. The developers utilize many fun, tried-and-true VR gameplay mechanics, including bullet time, deflecting bullets, and punching to teleport toward and strike enemies. It’s a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it!
