I can't recommend this game at the moment. When it's finished it will be OK.I will be reluctant to buy any game in future on first release.Basically you are paying to test the game.Wait until the game has been updated as mentioned in other threads and then buy it.
A single-dev sci-fi immersive sim with a competently written plot pushed forward by a time limit, dozens of different tools, an integrated tactical slow mo, radiation, toxicity and oxygen management, two big open areas and a full voiceover. Why so few people played it and why are their thoughts so mixed? Well, it’s because despite clearly being a passion project and an homage to good old System Shocks, HEVN is one of those games where everything works but nothing works as intended. Here are just a few examples: there are big open areas… but you have to rush to get to your goal before the antagonist tracks down your assistant. In fact, you have plenty of time to explore, but it is not communicated properly, so you just run to find the goal with your only guidance being a tiny poorly readable map that at first gives very little idea on where to actually go. It is in fact a pretty regular map, but at first glance you don’t even understand what this tiny thing is. Oxygen, toxicity and radiation management are also poorly communicated: unless I read in the booklet that raw soviten (wonder-mineral) is radioactive, I wouldn’t know why my radiation went up so much. There are plenty of tools: a few grenade and mine types, gravity well grenades, EMPs but… You don’t need them. Guns will do all the work. Because ammo is liberally scattered across the levels – you will never be in shortage. The idea is this colony has no regular weaponry because the planet has no indigenous fauna, so all the weapons are repurposed tools – including defibrillator and a fire-extinguisher. But you won’t need those two. Defibrillator you’ll use only at the very beginning, and the extinguisher can only extinguish two set-piece fires in the game. I don’t know, maybe there are more fires to put out – but I didn’t find any, and some others that I did find were inextinguishable. You can open cubboards, but you won’t need to. You can eat and drink, but you won’t need to. You can use slow mo, but you won’t need to. There are ion storms on the planet surface meant to send you clawing for shelter so as not to get scorched by lightning, but you won’t need to: you can just heal out the damage. Then there’s the combat. This gun is good against organics, that gun is good against non-organics. Took me a while to realize “nests” were amalgamations of rock, because the damage I was doing to them with anti-organic flamethrower was quite acceptable when in reality it should be almost zero. There are three types of hostile droids and for some reason same gun does significantly more damage to one than to another. Why? Don’t know. And bugs, bugs, bugs... This is what happens when you just throw in a heap of ingredients that make immersive sim immersive and don’t fit them into a balanced clockwork mechanism. Why thumbs up then? Well… First, it’s simple yet solid hard sci-fi. With a lot of good world building and decent personal drama. Then, there’s the matter of reworks. You see, when I was looking for playthroughs to figure out what to do next (because a button bugged out or because the objective was shouted to me over the radio while I was in the middle of a fight with three droids at the same time), I saw that two years ago, on release, the game was very different. It had different UI, different player controller – generally speaking, it was a different game. Miga, the dev, actually went ahead and refashioned HEVN significantly. Not only is there a lot of work put into the game in the first place, there’s a lot of work put into polishing it. The result is still unpolished, but it seems to be so much better. It’s a titanic labor to bring an immersive sim to life – multiplied thousandfold if there’s only one developer. HEVN is a museum of design mistakes. But those mistakes will only be in vain if Miga doesn’t make another game. I’m waiting for a sequel.
Alien Isolation
https://youtu.be/UXpGATPP8uk
I played the demo of this game a couple years ago and found it interesting and enjoyable. Which is how it ended up on my wishlist. Now years later I had forgotten about it until I got a sale notification. So I bought it, that was a mistake. What do I like? The areas look good and you have a lot of freedom to move and explore...except for my REALLY HATE below. What don't I like? Controls are laggy, jumping is a pain, combat is bad. Four shots from a gun to kill the smallest bug? Swing a sledgehammer and if the enemy moves slightly or if you are on higher ground then you totally miss. The built in map is a pencil drawing of little real use. If the AI says something and you miss it, you can't find it out. The saves are listed with date and some form of timestamp, so finding any but the latest is a guessing game. What do I REALLY HATE?! All the above plus huge maps with multiple paths and a timer. This game might be worth the $5 I paid if I didn't have to rush through it lest the hack succeed and the sky turn red and GAME OVER. This was not worth my time or my money, and it recommend you avoid it.
Its a bit rough around the edges but the devs are very responsive to feedback and eager to fix bugs. Some parts were a bit of a drag and some parts really engaging especially the end. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I think its value for money especially considering the recent price drop. The good stuff I thought the world building and lore were excellent; really immersive. Voice acting was decent and graphically its very nice. I also had no problems with performance and there was a recent patch to improve performance even more. Now the bad stuff which I'm going to dedicate more time to but that is only to be precise enough that it doesn't unnecessarily put people off getting the game. Firstly I wasn't overly impressed with the UI\UX. I guess the inventory is mostly functional but the hud and mini map could have been a-lot better. Early on I was dying because I didn't realize I was taking radiation or toxic damage. These particular warnings appear as very tiny labels that can be easily overlooked. The map shows you where you are and where you need to go but for some reason quite a few times I would go to the wrong point. It would look like on the map I was where I needed to be but I was off by several meters. It might be that the map simply wasn't big enough. A full screen map view would have been nice (maybe there is one and I missed it.) Interesting point; I've seen game-play clips of earlier builds and the game actually originally had a much different UX which I actually think looks better; it had a nice retro look about it. Secondly the controls for the game were mostly fine but there seemed like there was a lot of extra keys to bind. Like For example you would pick up a tablet to read with one key and then swipe left with another and swipe right with another and put it down again with another. As you can't bind multiple functions to the same key and have the game decide on context; there ends up being a lot of keys to bind. I'm one of those players where everything has to be reachable while keeping my hand hovering above WASD. Thirdly some of the game mechanics don't really seem to be that helpful although maybe that was down to my playing style or perhaps I just didn't learn how to use them properly. For example you can freeze time and slow down time but these abilities are not really that advantageous because when time is frozen so are you and when time is moving slowly so are you. There is also a throwing mechanic which can be for grenades but also random items to throw for distractions. Well I never found any of the enemies were all that responsive to distractions and grenades were mainly only useful for the very slow or non moving enemies. Finally one very small criticism is that because the game is semi open world and not on rails you might end up taking a different route than the one the game expects you do take. There is no real harm done in fact many people might appreciate the freedom but for me it just make things feel a bit tedious at times. Also there was one particular point where I remember the dialog not making any sense; after walking down an incline in a cave system my character says I wonder if this is way up. I realized later that the game probably expected me to arrive at the point from the other direction i.e. I should have been going up that incline.
Great game so far, I'm only 15 minutes in and the story already seems interesting. Controls are a little weird but the game feels really smoothe. Follow along to watch the rest of the let's play here. https://youtu.be/kM53thILZik
HVEN is fun sci fi game that doesn't hold you hand and lets you discover things by your self, which is a good thing because it immerses you in that lost in space feeling. Also worth mentioning is this game is not a system hog meaning you can play this game a potato PC. Too bad it doesn't have a VR mode because really this game hase everything for it: low system requirements, slow paced, first person exploration. Hopefully developers will add it in. I do not play games like this one but this one held me for more than an hour in the first go and if there was a VR version I would be all in! I made a benchmark video and although my PC specs are waaaay beyond this game needs, still it can be nice introduction without spoiling the game: https://youtu.be/fED758vHrEw
I couldn't find anything about this issue, but this game forces mouse acceleration for me and I can't figure out how to fix it. And for me that just makes this game unplayable, I don't know if it's only me, but just keep in mind that if you care about this, it might be an issue.
Nice game, I would even say it's a gem. Can be a little hard to know what to do at first but thats it's charm.
