About

HB&P is a classic old-school RPG inspired by the design and aesthetics of the 80s and 90s. Your decisions will determine how each adventure ends. Every story includes random and dynamic elements, meaning no two playthroughs will ever be exactly the same.
Although HB&P embraces a nostalgic 80s/90s style, we’ve spared you from reading endless blocks of text by keeping the storytelling fast-paced and engaging.
Here’s where it begins: you, the player, create a character from one of eight available classes and enter a medieval fantasy world. The classes are Warrior, Wizard, Rogue, Bard, Necromancer, Priest, Hunter, and Assassin.
This world is made up of stories, each completely replayable thanks to the influence of player decisions, character stats, skills, and items. On top of that, every story includes procedural elements that generate new options, locations, encounters, characters, traps, battles, and random loot—even when you replay the same adventure with the same character! Some stories may also change their plot each time you revisit them, and making different choices will lead to new endings.
Unlimited Free Play: Complete adventures in any order and replay them as many times as you like. Choose from six difficulty levels and customize each adventure. Even if your character dies, they keep all earned equipment and loot, and you can start a new adventure—or replay the same one.
Campaign Mode: Survive through five randomly generated stories played in sequence, with increasing difficulty. If your character dies during the campaign, the adventure ends!
As you play, your character earns experience points and levels up, growing more powerful with each adventure. There’s no level cap—you can strengthen your stats as much as you want.
8 character classes, each with unique playstyles and equipment.
12 fully replayable stories.
Over 300 game pages that can change every time you play.
Two game modes: Unlimited Free Play and Campaign.
More than 350 illustrated adventure scenes.
180 items including weapons, spells, and accessories.
Over 100 different monsters.
More than 100 immersive sound effects.

The interface is clunky - there's no easy way to get a display other than ~720p at the center of your screen. Fullscreen gives a black border which is the majority of my 1440p display, and attempting to go Windowed with Lossless Scaling as a workaround breaks the interface. I also found that the framerate felt more steady with G-Sync disabled. There's also little details like not always being able to return to the main menu, like during character selection, and volume settings not saving between launches. Still, I get how difficult getting these details right as a solo dev is, so at this price point I'll tolerate it. There is music and SFX, but they're being oversold here. Nice that they exist, but you're not missing much if you mute in favor of a secondary activity. Negatives out of the way, what you see is what you get - short adventures that have interconnected consequences, a lot of outcomes determined by d21-1 vs [Relevant stat or lower] checks, and a small amount of action variation so that there's no immediately obvious "right" way to play. It does feel like the combat-focused classes do better, since it doesn't always feel like the alternative of avoiding combat is possible, though that could be a lack of metaknowledge on my part. Don't expect huge amounts of replay value, but I think there's more to see here than the current Steam reviews show, and I could easily see myself spending 10+ hours trying to get better at winning Campaigns and get rarer endings in the individual stories.
I noticed that this game is still being updated. That's amazing, thank you for this. Something like this feels like it was made for me and I really want to re-visit it now that so much more content has been released since. My internet went out once during a stormy day and this was what I played that day. Turned what should have been an absolute bummer day into a real treat now that I look back on it.
Things I like: - The chapters can be repeated as much as you want, some endings can only be unlocked with proper equipment or leveling. - The classes are very fluid, it's only your starting point. - I loved the Conan the Barbarian influences. - The nostalgic feel of the game, I loved choose your own adventure games. Things I did not like: - The UI is a bit rough for certain things, but this is an issue that doesn't influence gameplay. - Cheesing money is a bit easy once you get the feeling of the game (I like my games hard!).
A very imaginative game. I recommend it
This game transports me to the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books I used to read as a child, or to my early AD&D role-playing sessions. The affection for the stories is evident, despite not having impressive graphics; it reminds me of static images from games like the old Baldur's Gate. Simple at first, but its randomness and the way you can see how objects from one story can affect others make it replayable. Furthermore, the desire to experience all the endings and read all the possible stories makes it addictive. The interface can be confusing at first, but after a few tries, you'll get the hang of it. In summary: don't expect a game with powerful graphics, but rather a nostalgic experience that appeals to all audiences and invites using your imagination.
A good game to play with kids or even adults.
Excelente juego!
I really love this! Very imaginative and I didn't want to stop playing it. I love the interactive functions and the way you can choose your path. Very fun!
Good game. It remains the "Choose Your Own Adventure" gamebooks. Lets see how it evolves.
Couple of things to give as feedback. There was at least one example early on of words that appeared to be out of order or poorly used. I suggest having someone read of the game text as a second pair of eyes to catch anything you miss while writing the game's stories. We all make mistakes and making sure the early game experience is as perfect as possible will help with player retention. I personally would love to see the game's UI larger. I can understand that if it's a graphics limitation then the players just have to accept it. However, I have a 1440p monitor and found myself having to lean forward to enjoy the game as the space being used was only about 50 percent. Overall I find the gameplay to be enjoyable and look forward to the continued development of the game. I like the concept of choosing a character and then just working your way through the stories where sometimes it is better to repeat a story a couple times to level up before completing the next one due to the difficulty. The RNG of the story elements made it feel unique enough to where repeating the same story felt like you can continue to get more out of it through different requirements at events and varied loot drops.
