About

HB&P is a classic old-school RPG inspired by the design and aesthetics of the 80s and 90s. Your decisions will determine how each adventure ends. Every story includes random and dynamic elements, meaning no two playthroughs will ever be exactly the same.
Although HB&P embraces a nostalgic 80s/90s style, we’ve spared you from reading endless blocks of text by keeping the storytelling fast-paced and engaging.
Here’s where it begins: you, the player, create a character from one of eight available classes and enter a medieval fantasy world. The classes are Warrior, Wizard, Rogue, Bard, Necromancer, Priest, Hunter, and Assassin.
This world is made up of stories, each completely replayable thanks to the influence of player decisions, character stats, skills, and items. On top of that, every story includes procedural elements that generate new options, locations, encounters, characters, traps, battles, and random loot—even when you replay the same adventure with the same character! Some stories may also change their plot each time you revisit them, and making different choices will lead to new endings.
Unlimited Free Play: Complete adventures in any order and replay them as many times as you like. Choose from six difficulty levels and customize each adventure. Even if your character dies, they keep all earned equipment and loot, and you can start a new adventure—or replay the same one.
Campaign Mode: Survive through five randomly generated stories played in sequence, with increasing difficulty. If your character dies during the campaign, the adventure ends!
As you play, your character earns experience points and levels up, growing more powerful with each adventure. There’s no level cap—you can strengthen your stats as much as you want.
8 character classes, each with unique playstyles and equipment.
12 fully replayable stories.
Over 300 game pages that can change every time you play.
Two game modes: Unlimited Free Play and Campaign.
More than 350 illustrated adventure scenes.
180 items including weapons, spells, and accessories.
Over 100 different monsters.
More than 100 immersive sound effects.
Epic original soundtracks.

Heroes of Book and Paper is a unique game. It's presented as a story with multiple branching alternatives, full of choices. Its presentation reminds me of the gold box games, full of descriptions that leave it up to your imagination to interpret how everything looks, which is cool. While each adventure is short, there are quite a few of them, and they are all interesting. Many of the adventures have multiple endings, different encounters, and so on. One part I really liked was finding that one of the final bosses of a module was actually related to my character. Rather unique! You can import your same character across all of the modules, play a new character in each one, or anything in between. Combat is simple, but easy to manage. Leveling up is also nice and straight forward. Overall the game is a simple, yet fun adventure with multiple opportunities and stories. I'm sure the dev will release more stories as time goes by. Heroes of Book and Paper is an interesting game to spend a few hours on.
If you hear a game named Heroes of Book & Paper and your first thought goes into the direction of Tabletop RPG’s/ Pen & Paper RPG’s I would say you are not entirely wrong. Heroes of Book & Paper feels like a choose your own adventure book but like the more elaborate ones where you either create yourself a character in the beginning or the ones where you had premade character on the last few pages. I am mentioning this because this is exactly how this feels to me, as you choose 1 out of 8 premade characters and then pick 1 of the adventures the game is offering. As for the game, you can choose between a normal game, where you can pick the story you want to play or a campaign where you will get 5 of the stories in random succession. During the game you will receive different items which will help you depending on the situation, as well as XP that can be used at the end of an adventure to grow your characters stats. But, if you happen to die, all your hard-earned XP are gone however, your items remain for the next try. The game itself of course is not a graphical marvel, as no one would expect for this type of game, but displays an easy-to-follow stories that are supported by graphics and small animations for additional depth and appeal. Pros:

8 Character classes to choose from
The character class you pick can be helpful in certain situations
Choices matter, no going back and cheating like in the books (RUDE)
Items are important as they open additional dialogue options
Replicability due to different endings/Classes
Short stories than can be played quickly
Potential to add more content/stories later
The story telling style that does add to the bookish feel of the game.
Cons:

The UI/Menu is rather confusing, I ended up a few times where I did not want to go
Save game management is a little bit of a challenge
No stockpile for items between adventures
So, is Heroes of Book & Paper for you? That depends, if you are looking for a game that takes you down memory lane to the times of choose you own adventure type books, or maybe the early stages of TTRPG’s and Pen & Paper games, and you don’t expect flashy graphics and all the bells and whistles? Then you might want to check it out, as for me personally it was a nice refreshing old school experience and a welcome dose of nostalgia reminding me how many solo adventure books I did own when I was younger. (And totally did not cheat while reading/playing them) The decision is yours, game on and have fun.
This is a neutral-quite-ok-maybe-thumb-up. There are a few adventures and they are decent, but the game is short, like really short. Two or three hours at most. To get to four hours I replayed a lot of adventures, just to see how the stories branch out with different choices and in general it did not feel like it mattered much.
If you like gamebooks then I recommend this game. It has it's own differences to stand out. If you die you keep your items and stats but you lose your experience points. Some choices are locked to a needed item or class. There is many stories you can play through with the same character which can have different endings. I believer there are some random encounters as well. As with other gamebooks it is always a good idea to write down locations as a reminder for the next play or returning to a story, which steam now supports notes for a game when you use alt-tab to see the steam overlay where you can create notes. So this steam feature will complement this game. Also note the developer has written a basic guide in the guides section on steam.
The dev listened to my suggestions, It's a pretty good game all in all. some important tips I can give is: - Try to always have a map - Spells are always better then their item counterparts and give XP for using their story options - Repeat old missions to get stronger if you are having trouble completing one
Pretty fun game for DnD fans - more content than i had anticipated and good replayability. Good to support an indie game!
A charming game, more people should know about this :)
I noticed that this game is still being updated. That's amazing, thank you for this. Something like this feels like it was made for me and I really want to re-visit it now that so much more content has been released since. My internet went out once during a stormy day and this was what I played that day. Turned what should have been an absolute bummer day into a real treat now that I look back on it.
Heroes of Book & Paper A little Indie Gem. That being said, this is a 9.95 AUD game. - So please set expectations appropriately. Now, if you enjoy the old school books/games where you went on a little choose your own adventure I strongly believe that you will love this game. This game contains eight possible classes including your fun and cuddly Necromancer. - Also Assassins, Bards, Warriors, Sorcerers Etc. So its got most if not all bases covered. Whilst there are these classes they don't lock you into a certain play style. I'm currently rocking the worlds Beefiest Bard. I use melee to fight off enemies and use utility spells to help me get through events that will appear. Now, while talking about spells, you can only have one active spell at a time HOWEVER any spell held on your person (in your limited inventory) can be used in events! So I found myself holding onto a host of really useful spells that would unlock entirely new paths for me to take, discover and defeat! There's a wide range of spells to use and also an even wider range of weapons and utility gadgets. Oh, did I mention that beating a mission will save your progress so that u can become more powerful? So if a levels beating you time and time again you can go back to missions you've beat previously and level up. But is that the only reason to return to old missions? Nope. As you progress you'll find and unlock new items/spells that you can take back with you to the older missions to unlock entirely new paths that were previously unavailable to you. So I was talking alot about these missions. Currently there are six available with more planned for the future (as far as i'm aware). Another really interesting and cool thing about these missions - is that choices you make in them can and WILL carry over into future missions. Maybe you save some royalty in a past mission and they reappear in a future mission where you decide who becomes the leader of a nation. Maybe you don't save them and instead a faction of monsters gains power instead. Who knows how your story will unfold? Now, there is an impressive amount of Art for the diverse group of monsters and events that appear. Zombies, Minotaurs, Dragons, Wolfs, Bandits... Yea this game will have you covered for all your monster needs. Each brought to you with a book stylised art. But not just the monsters, you also are shown a small snippit of the place you met that encounter. So if you are fighting a Goblin near a Water-well than the well will also appear in the art. Finally, the developer/s are really nice and willing to work to help fix bugs/problems that occur. In my time playing this game I ran into two game-stopping bugs and the Dev team was quick to respond and help me fix them ASAP so I could keep playing. Ok Ok, I've gushed enough. So a few little things that I need to point out that weren't so good. - I experienced two major bugs that stopped me dead in my tracks. - Info about things isn't easily explained or its mentioned briefly and If you miss that line of text It causes confusion. My first attempt at this game was with a Necromancer and I had no idea how summoning the dead actually worked. What they did and how stuff worked. The spells and items have a very limited info panel that I hope will be fleshed out in the future. - Games really short, you can probably beat this game in like 30 mins if you blitzed all the content. That being said the whole point of a choose your own adventure is to take your time and enjoy reading asif you had a book unfolding before you with your choices leading the way. TL DR : Games a bit short, but its also only $10. So I was content with it being short. Devs are working hard on the game and content with lots more coming in the future. If you enjoy choose your own adventure books but having those adventures results carry over with you - you'll enjoy this game. I've enjoyed my time with this game and i'll almost certainly return when the next Adventure comes out. Its Worth a grab and try - At $10 its crazy cheap. I had alot of fun here with this little game.
