I didn't really expect much, it was on sale for $2.99. It was over 7 hours later that I had to make myself stop playing. It reminds me of the old NES/SNES dungeon crawlers. The game ran smoothly, and I experienced zero bugs or crashes. It's just a fun game, for a great price.
I was enjoying it until I got to a dungeon where the auto-mapping no longer functioned because of a dungeon feature, and after 10 minutes or so of running around the same loop in a dungeon where every feature of the landscape looked identical I shrugged, uninstalled and moved on with my life. It's pretty okay for an under-four dollar game, I guess.
Very nice old-school mix of overland strategy game with a dungeon crawler. Refreshing, to say the least.
Extremely fun and addicting game. Really colorful and retro graphics, but I am not a fan of the undersized monster models and how "cutesy" they look (if you're into Dragonquest, that is what they remind me of). This is pretty much my only criticism of the game... well that and I muted the piano music as I feel it doesn't really suit the feel of the game. Exploring the overworld and the town building is a stripped down version of Heroes of Might and Magic, while the dungeon crawling mode is Eye of the Beholder. Traps are very obvious and all you have to do is click on them, but at times you'll be going fast around a corner and set one off (or by failing a disarm). Tons of treasure and generically named armor and weapons (example, a brawny spear increases your strength). Everything in the game moves at a fast pace to keep you interested. You can customize heroes once you've built an Adventurer's Guild, so don't be upset at the beginning if all four of them look the same... you can change it after the first dungeon is completed. From what I understand, there are just the four classes but they are good enough to keep the game fun. The balance is pretty good, as some enemies require magic damage while others have resistances. Overall, I find myself losing hours in this game all the while it being fairly simple to grasp and play. Definitely worth it if you like having multiple parties, dungeon crawling, and a light town building game.
Heroes of a Broken Land is a criminally overlooked first person team-based RPG. It features town customization that provides various benefits to your heroes, multi-team (and multi-level) dungeons, strategic turn-based combat, and extensive world building options - this game can be as hardcore or easy as you want it to be. While faithfully old-school, it includes several very welcome modern additions, the biggest being an ability to quickly travel through a dungeon by clicking on a spot on the automap that has already been explored. You'll be trekking through many caves, towers, and mines, so this is an excellent time saver and helps immensely to track down that last enemy group. Heroes of a Broken Land is very complex and this short review only really touches on all it has to offer. I recommend you buy it now and see for yourself! In the meantime, Winged Pixel is developing the sequel which looks to be even bigger and better!
Just finished a playthrough with the world size set to Huge. I'll update this when I get the final achievement.
nice little game worth a try.
