Really enjoyable old-school shooter. The fun really kicks in when you try to get gold medals and you start seeing all of the ways the levels are laid out to help you get through them in a fast and deadly manner. Wish this game got a little bit more recognition, it's a gem for anyone that appreciates this style.
On paper, "retro" and "mod friendly" can look like some appealing assets. That is, when you don't take time to consider a coherent theme or default maps that are of substance. Instead you got some really barebones levels that can be played in any order, almost all of them seem to have the same hanger-esque design: huge spaces that are mostly empty. bland textures, boring enemy skins and enemy scripting. So yes, on paper "retro" and "mod friendly" sound great, when there's an actual game I feel compelled to see modifications of. But this ain't it. I've been having a lot of optimism in the promise for new mod fanbases for future retro style fps's, but unfortunately there will be some mediocre excuses for insubstantial barebones projects like these. This still looks like the beta version of something that later went on to become good. The only difference is I just paid money for beta part. The cart before there is any horse, or financial incentive to even make the horse at all so I'm just potentially stuck with this empty boring cart.

I've only played an hour of the game so far, but I think it's enough to write a review... I'll start by saying that I spent this hour beating the first level. This game doesn't joke around. You better have played Brutal Doom or Quake before you enter. You think you'll be spawned into a tutorial? No. You think you'll get a few minutes to get used to the game? You get two rooms, and after that it's hard-on hardcore. The controls are pretty much perfect. The shotgun feels good. The enemies are mostly weak but are placed in ludicrous numbers, so be sure to check every room for 50 Cacademons. Yes, most of the enemies are weaker and retextured versions of Doom and Quake enemies. The graphics... That's where the game definetly doesn't shine. It looks terrible and lacks polish. You should hope that the gameplay will make you forget that your character's hands look like the worst LOD of Doom 2016's ones. Overall, buy if you want some hardcore action.
Solid foundation for a good game. Look forward to seeing at what the mapping community will have made in the future.
While I find Hellbreaker to be a pretty good game, it still has so much more potential. It plays like a straight-up old school shooter, and it's quite fun. I was expecting much less for the price. The weapons all feel pretty good and they did a much needed upgrade to the sound and impact of the plasma rifle. Also with the level editor, this allows for people to make and share their own levels. Already someone made a map named "Solace" which I found to be the best of Hellbreaker I played yet... Would really like if possible to see some added co-op and other possible MP gamemodes like DM and CTF, update the boring generic UI and some of the texture work on enemies, and just add a few more tweaks such as the fludity of movement, and then Hellbreaker would be a very solid game in my eyes then. Currently, it's pretty good, and I recommend you get it for a lot of fun action awaits you in this game, but it still feels like it has much more potentinal to be something better. But at the end of the day: It's a fast paced, fun, frantic, arcade shooter that I feel many will enjoy.
just disappointing
Pretty sick game
Fast paced action similar to Doom and Quake with a level editor included, highly recommended
