OMG This game was completely awesome and super cozy!! There were many locations, characters to talk with, items to find, puzzles to solve and a pretty good mystery along with cut-scenes. It wasn't perfect as some of the navigation was a bit clunky and confusing and one of the puzzles (Japanese) still didn't make much sense. A couple of times, I got lost and didn't know what to do next. And while the interface and graphics seems a bit amateurish, the game itself and story, were solid and excellent. I wish there were a hint system to point us in the right direction and a few of the objects were difficult to find with the older graphics. A hot-spot indicator would've helped greatly with this. But that's nit-picking as this game has lots of atmosphere and real voice overs, which are very good. At times the characters go on with lots of reading, but it's better than not enough. I really truly enjoyed this game immensely. It's been a while, but I really hope they make more like it!
This game really takes you back to the old golden days of point n' click adventures, with prerendered static scenes which you navigate by clicking on a hot spot, as well as low-res pixelated art. It does feel outdated for 2012, the voiceovers are very inconsistent and sound like each actor had a separate microphone, but I doubt anyone playing Cliffhouse is looking for impressive visuals, sound mixing or state of the art gameplay mechanics. Story-wise the game is okay - it starts building a mystery, suspense, and a general feeling of "something's not right in this place" which you just gotta love. Cliffhouse keeps the ball rolling like that almost till the very end, it never becomes very difficult with its puzzles or boring and keeps you interested. The end itself, however, leaves much to be desired. It's like it got chopped off abruptly, and while I feel like I understand what happened in the end, some narrative support would have been nice. But all in all it's a pretty neat project by a solo dev.
Although it mentions I only played it for 20 minutes, I bought this game when it came out but lost the files and was happy to see it on Steam, so here is a brief review of the game: Fun little game, great pastime and a lot of puzzles ranging from easy to hard but most of you will not need a walkthrough to play this game. I found the voice acting to be very good. And I really loved being inside the Cliffhouse Bed and Breakfast hotel, absolutely beautiful, makes you want to be there. And for the price, for me it was well worth the money and I enjoyed playing it and will re-play it in the future.
This game was dark and creepy, but engaging. The puzzles are straightforward and fun. The storyline is very engaging.
Delightful Old School Point and click Adventure!! They don't make them like this anymore!!
A basic yet atmospheric and entertaining point and click game. I found it worth the price, and I didn't see the ending coming!
Nice Little point and click. Enjoyed :)
Fun game old school point and click. Graphics are good, needs to have a music turn off. Very interesting storyline.
This is a fun little old-style mystery game, basically point-and-click, with a small amount of dialogue and an assortment of puzzles. The puzzles, for the most part, are lightly challenging without being too difficult. The character art doesn't show the characters speaking, but that's not a big deal, and the voice acting itself is ok. There are a lot of rooms to look around in, and you get to explore some outdoor areas as well. Visually, the game is quite nice and captures a cozy atmosphere. The mystery involves mild supernatural elements, particularly in how the backstory unfolds. (If you've played The 7th Guest, think about how that backstory unfolds after each puzzle, and you get the idea.) I can't really say much negative about it, but be aware that the main character is grieving from the death of her husband and that gets mentioned multiple times, so if you're playing a game as a form of escapism from anything heavy, keep that in mind. I played the game all the way through in about four-and-a-half hours, looking online for a hint one time because I had clicked too fast and missed a line of dialogue. (I'm not sure if there is a way to get dialogue to replay, but if there is I couldn't find it.) Anyway, my point is that you won't need a walkthrough with this one. With so many places to explore, you'll hit everything you need in order to keep the game moving forward if you just keep looking around. And even the more difficult puzzles aren't of the type that require extra help. They just take a few moments of patience. I bought the game when it wasn't on sale, and the current price (4.99 US) is easily worth it. I hope to check out other games by this developer, because this one was a nice cozy mystery game.
