This is basically a walking 2D simulator with creepy monsters, you can't defend yourself other than find clues as to what is going on in the prison block. now the monsters can kill you. but you can't kill them, all you can do is run away. If you can at least defend yourself than this game would be good. Its not a bad game, and I like the music in the background. but if you can't do anything other than find clues, walk around and not able to defend yourself than its not fun to play. though it says you can hit enter for action. but it didn't seem to work. Others might enjoy it, but I got quite bored after awhile.
I don't know if I'd say this is worth $1... but I got some entertainment and easy achievements to 100% so I'm happy. I recommend this on 50% off sale.
Hi, Anamik Majumdar. I hate horror games, but it was fun. You programmed everything except music? That's great! I'll cheer you on making another good game. but there's one little thing that bothers me. That is, subtitles disappear too quickly.
Haunted Jail: Alcatas is a 2D top down retro pixel stealth/puzzle game where you wander around a jail that doesn't have much in the way of lighting (not a great idea) to discover it's haunted. Run away from the ghosts and solve the simple switch flicking puzzles. The implementation here is garbage. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC.
Haunted Jail: Alcatas developed and published by Anamik Majumdar is a short atmospheric horror adventure that places players inside a mysterious and allegedly haunted prison complex. Designed as a small indie project, the game focuses on exploration, paranormal encounters, and building tension through eerie environments rather than fast-paced action or complicated mechanics. While its scale is modest, the game attempts to capture the unsettling experience of investigating a cursed location filled with tragic history and supernatural disturbances. The story takes place on Alcatas Island, home to an infamous prison facility that once served as both a military installation and later a high-security correctional institution. Over the decades, the prison gained a reputation for brutality, suffering, and unexplained incidents. According to the lore presented in the game, many prisoners died under harsh conditions, and rumors began circulating that their restless spirits never left the prison grounds. Eventually, large sections of the prison were shut down after staff reported hearing voices in empty corridors and witnessing strange apparitions. These stories turned the abandoned prison into a place surrounded by fear and superstition. Players assume the role of a night security guard assigned to monitor the deserted building. What begins as a routine shift soon turns into a disturbing investigation as unusual occurrences begin to unfold. As the guard moves through the dark hallways and cell blocks, strange sounds echo through the structure and signs of paranormal activity begin to appear. The game gradually reveals fragments of the prison’s dark past through environmental clues and subtle storytelling, allowing players to piece together the tragic events that may have awakened something supernatural within the prison. Gameplay is centered primarily on exploration. Presented from a two-dimensional perspective, the player navigates through corridors, abandoned cells, and hidden rooms scattered throughout the prison. The goal is to search these areas for clues while progressing deeper into the facility. Movement is simple and easy to understand, making the game accessible even to players who are not familiar with more complex survival horror titles. The emphasis is placed on slowly uncovering the secrets of the prison rather than mastering intricate gameplay systems. Throughout the exploration, players encounter paranormal phenomena that reinforce the haunted setting. Ghostly figures may briefly appear in the shadows, eerie whispers echo through empty hallways, and certain areas of the prison seem to react to the player’s presence. These supernatural elements are designed to create moments of surprise and tension that interrupt the otherwise quiet exploration. In some cases, players may even discover hidden dimensions of the prison connected to a mysterious spirit world, adding another layer of supernatural intrigue to the story. The pacing of the game is intentionally slow, allowing the atmosphere to build gradually. Rather than relying on constant jump scares or combat sequences, the game focuses on maintaining a sense of unease. Players often move through silent corridors with limited visibility, never quite certain what they might encounter next. This deliberate pacing encourages careful exploration while reinforcing the feeling of isolation that comes with investigating a haunted building alone. Visually, Haunted Jail: Alcatas uses a simple pixel-inspired 2D presentation that reflects its indie development origins. The environments consist of dimly lit hallways, abandoned prison cells, and shadowy corners that contribute to the eerie mood of the game. Although the graphics are not highly detailed, they effectively convey the bleak atmosphere of a forgotten prison where something sinister may still linger. The minimalist design also helps keep the focus on exploration and environmental storytelling. Sound design plays a crucial role in shaping the game’s horror atmosphere. Ambient noises such as distant footsteps, creaking metal doors, and faint whispers help create the impression that the prison is still inhabited by unseen forces. Occasional musical cues heighten moments of tension, particularly when supernatural events occur. Even in moments where nothing visible appears on screen, the audio environment maintains a constant feeling of unease that keeps players alert. Despite its atmospheric strengths, the game’s limited scope becomes noticeable during extended play. The overall experience is quite short and can be completed in a relatively brief session. Because the gameplay mechanics are simple and there are few puzzles or interactive systems, the exploration may begin to feel repetitive for players expecting a deeper survival horror experience. The game focuses primarily on atmosphere rather than complex gameplay challenges. Another limitation is the lack of extensive narrative development. While the prison’s haunted history is intriguing, the story unfolds only in small fragments and does not explore its characters or events in great detail. Players looking for a more elaborate storyline or extensive lore may find the narrative somewhat minimal compared to larger horror games. Even with these limitations, Haunted Jail: Alcatas still succeeds in delivering a brief but engaging paranormal experience. The eerie setting of an abandoned prison provides a naturally unsettling environment, and the supernatural elements create moments of suspense that keep players curious about what lies deeper within the building. The game works particularly well as a short horror experience that can be completed in a single sitting. Overall, Haunted Jail: Alcatas is a modest indie horror title that focuses on atmosphere, exploration, and paranormal storytelling rather than complex gameplay mechanics. While its short runtime and limited systems prevent it from offering the depth of larger survival horror games, its haunted prison setting and eerie tone make it a memorable experience for players who enjoy small experimental horror projects.
This is essentially a walking 2D simulator with creepy monsters. You can’t defend yourself—your only option is to find clues about what’s going on in the prison block. The monsters can kill you, but you can’t fight back; all you can do is run. It would definitely be more enjoyable if there was a way to defend yourself, which would add a bit more excitement and control to the gameplay. It’s not a bad game overall, and I do enjoy the background music, but the lack of interaction beyond walking around and finding clues made it less fun for me. There’s an "action" button (Enter), but it didn’t seem to work. Some players might still enjoy it, but I found myself getting bored after a while.
I like this developer and this genre. This seem to be one of his first in this genre. If you have played other games from this Dev, then this suck! Tip: 90% of time go up or down, don't bother right-left. Easy Achievements, 100% / 45min.
