This is only the free demo of the full roguelite action RPG. Basically, in each run you level up your character with whatever skills you think will help them survive the incoming waves of enemies while gaining more XP. It contains two combat stages, each with its own enemies, bosses, and mini-quest, six character types, and a lot of achievements for every combination. Some achievements unlock new skills, buffs, or extra gold for basic character equipment. Retro pixel-style graphics and sound. Since it’s free and provided me with an introduction to the genre and around 25 hours of casual gameplay, I’d say the demo is recommended. The main game, however, is probably not going to be my next choice in the genre.

Halls of Torment: Prelude is a strong example of how a compact standalone experience can successfully capture the essence of a larger game. Developed and published by Chasing Carrots, this dark fantasy roguelite delivers a satisfying blend of old-school action RPG atmosphere and modern survival gameplay. Rather than feeling like a limited preview, it provides a polished introduction to its core mechanics, giving players a clear understanding of the combat, progression, and addictive gameplay loop that define the experience. The game’s biggest appeal comes from its combination of classic fantasy aesthetics and fast-paced survival mechanics. It takes inspiration from the atmosphere of older dungeon-crawling RPGs while incorporating the accessible structure of horde survival titles. Players enter dangerous areas filled with waves of enemies, gradually becoming stronger through experience, abilities, and upgrades. This simple concept creates an engaging cycle where every run feels like a new opportunity to create a powerful character build and overcome increasingly difficult challenges. Combat is easy to learn but offers more depth than expected. The focus is not only on defeating enemies but also on movement, positioning, and making smart decisions during intense encounters. Since attacks are handled automatically, the player’s attention is placed on avoiding threats, collecting resources, and choosing the right upgrades. As enemy groups become larger and more aggressive, the game creates moments of controlled chaos where survival depends on careful planning and quick reactions. The progression system is one of the strongest parts of the experience. Each run provides opportunities to unlock improvements and discover combinations of abilities that can dramatically change how a character performs. The excitement comes from experimenting with different approaches, whether focusing on overwhelming damage, defensive abilities, or specialized effects that help control enemy crowds. Even unsuccessful attempts contribute to progress because they teach players more about available options and encourage new strategies in future runs. The retro-inspired visual style gives the game a distinct personality. Instead of relying on modern graphical effects, it embraces a nostalgic presentation influenced by classic fantasy games from the late 1990s. The dark environments, pixel-based artwork, and old-school design choices create a unique atmosphere that perfectly fits the theme of battling through cursed halls filled with monsters. This artistic direction helps the game stand out in a crowded genre by giving it a recognizable identity. The audio and overall presentation also support the grim fantasy setting effectively. The sounds of combat, enemy encounters, and progression moments help maintain the feeling of exploring a dangerous underground world. While the game does not depend heavily on storytelling, its atmosphere creates enough immersion to make each run feel like a small adventure rather than just a series of battles. As a shorter experience, the game naturally has less content compared to a full release, but it makes excellent use of what it offers. The available mechanics are refined enough to encourage repeated playthroughs, and the focus on replayability fits perfectly with the roguelite structure. Players who enjoy improving their strategies, testing different builds, and chasing stronger performances will find plenty of enjoyment in returning for another attempt. Steam Deck compatibility is a natural fit for this title. The straightforward controls, readable interface, and short-session gameplay style make it highly suitable for handheld play. It performs well as a portable experience because players can easily jump into a quick run while still enjoying the long-term progression and challenge. The simplicity of the control scheme also makes it comfortable to play without requiring a traditional desktop setup. Overall, Halls of Torment: Prelude succeeds as an introduction to a well-designed roguelite action RPG. Chasing Carrots demonstrates a strong understanding of what makes this genre enjoyable by combining rewarding progression, satisfying combat, and a memorable visual style. It may be smaller in scope, but it delivers enough quality and replay value to stand confidently on its own while showcasing the potential of the larger experience. Rating: 8/10
good gameplay
Halls of Torment offers tons of replayability with minimal fuss, and is just challenging enough to keep you engaged for every moment.
也許有BUG,第二張圖打穿了,角色也五個了,任務也七七八八了,但只有兩張圖出現。
Excelente juego

Killed myself in the first try. Was extremely boring..... no dodge and too long between actually getting a skill.
