My Playtime: 5.8h (100% achievement, finished the game) My First Playthrough: 4.3h Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (15 achievements, all missables). Haimrik tells the story of a protagonist of the same name with a focus on materializing objects from words and using them to solve puzzles. Pros: - Unique gameplay that relies on trial and error - A lot of checkpoints to accommodate the trial and error playstyle Cons: - Control can be confusing - No chapter select for hunting missing achievement Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you want to play a short game with unique gameplay and don't mind with a little puzzle, buy this game at a sale.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
Haimrik looks like a 2D game at first with a sidescroller perspective. Characters are drawn in a cartoonish style, focusing on white and brown color. I like it when the game shifts its perspective, showing that it's actually a 3D game instead. It blew my mind when it happened for the first time.
Story
The storytelling is told in two different styles. The first one is the usual dialogue that you'll find in any other game, and the other is related to the gameplay. Words will be shown on the platform that you walk, letting you know what happened with the visual that was shown in the middle. In the book world, the dialogues mostly serve as a puzzle that is related to each level and the use of imaginary words helps to connect them to the object that you can materialize. However, this makes the dialogue that was told outside the book world to be boring and more straightforward. The story itself is straightforward, though. It gives you objectives after objectives that you can do to progress the story. There were some exposition and hints given early in thegame, but they are pretty small in amount. That being said, the game is pretty short, so it's natural that it doesn't have such a complicated story to begin with.
The Game
Gameplay Despite the use of words, it is more of a puzzle game rather than a visual novel. It has 2 gameplays: one where you explore the area to find your objectives, and the book world where you have to solve puzzles after puzzles in the book. All are done in a sidescroller format, although the book world will look more like platformers since it has to fit so many words on one screen. Words have power. You can materialize an object from words given in the text, combine it with another object (which you also materialize from the text), and use it to another object that might or might not be procured in the same way as the other two. Each puzzle will tell a story and what Haimrik needs to do to bypass it. Sometimes, the instruction is not clear; sometimes the objects that you can materialize might not be obvious either. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2427589187 It's a game that focuses on trial and error. There are some red herrings mixed in between the words that you can materialize, and you need to filter out which one you need. Although there are some hints, both from the text and the environment, sometimes they are not obvious enough until you know the answer. This was especially true during boss fights - you need to rack up your brains to figure out what the game really wants, and there are no hints that will help you if you are stuck. Checkpoints are abundant. Despite the numerous puzzles, the game seems to expect you to die at least once in these puzzles, allowing you to retry from the start of the puzzle whenever you die. Each puzzle doesn't take long to finish, so you don't have to worry about wasting your time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1797477466 Boss fights feel more like the regular puzzle you solve throughout the game, where you also need to watch your health. They will keep on draining your health with your attacks, and if you don't know how to dodge their attacks, you'll die. It can be challenging to figure out how to damage them and dodge their attack, although luckily, the sidescroller format helped. There won't be a lot of ways for you to dodge, and you can just list out the possibilities and try them out one by one. The same goes for attacking. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 4.3h. All optional achievements are missable and I missed 1 achievement during my playthrough. Since there is no chapter select, I ended up replaying the game from the beginning to get that missing achievement that was nearing the end game. Luckily, the game can be finished quickly if you know what to do. The game doesn't overstay its welcome. The gameplay might be unique and all, but it can be exhausting to continue playing the game since you usually just do some chores and collect objects from the book. It ends just at the right time, letting you have the enjoyment you need before you get bored. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1433860024 As for the difficulty, the game can be challenging at first. The control scheme wasn't clear enough at the beginning, making it hard for me to finish some puzzles. Moreover, killing enemies can take a while early game if you don't know what you are doing. And don't get me started on the bosses. Some of their attacks are annoying enough, blocking you from what you need to do and draining your health little by little. However, the annoying parts are usually short enough and it is usually followed up with easier puzzles.
Conclusion
Haimrik is such a unique game. I like the gameplay on how you are supposed to figure out what to do from all of the available objects. It can take a while to find what you need to do from trial and error, but that's where the game shines. However, since it can get boring quickly, I'd rather recommend it on sale.
The creators of Haimrick had an idea : What if you could go on an adventure and fight your enemies with words ? With that concept in mind, they asked around whether it could make for an interesting game. Someone who liked the idea got in touch with them, and started giving his opinion : " It's an interesting idea that shows a lot of promise...". That's when the team, cheering with joy, left the room to start working on the game. Unfortunately, that's not all the guy had to say... Had he been allowed to finish, he would have added "... but it's not enough to make a game out of it". But there was nobody left in the room to hear this. And that's what you get with Haimrick : a gimmick made into a game, with little else to support it. The story is written on the screen, usually bridges or floors, and you pick up some of those words to solve the situation at hand. Conjure a sword to fight bandits, a crossbow to kill a dragon, or combine water with a bucket to put out a fire. Sounds fun, right ? Creative even ! However, you'll quickly realize that most of the time there's only one way to go about it, and you're stuck trying things out until you find the one thing the game wants you to do. Which gets old pretty fast. A writer who uses his blood to dive into his magical book sounds great, and opens a lot of possibilities. Sadly, there's no gameplay mechanic associated with that : no cost, no limitations, no nothing. At least you save some ink, I guess.... That's not the only reason the story is disappointing. It is really hard to follow, and there are way too many characters cramped up in a 4-hour adventure, with no replay value whatsoever. The many spelling mistakes don't help either. Finally, there's the esthetics. I'm usually easily charmed by book-like graphics but this time it just didn't do it for me. It looks fine, but not great. I love words (I'm writing some as we speak) and word-based games, but it's hard to recommend Haimrick. Its main feature is a cute but ultimately limited mechanic that can't carry the whole game by itself. It's a 4 to me, as other games have done similar things better. And no worries, no blood was drawn writing this review !
Sinopsis

WARNING: This game features lots of blood and blood colors. If you do not like lots of blood or blood animations, please pass this game. Also, this game is not appropriate for young children. A teenager would be fine with this game though. Hello Friends, Today I will review the game Haimrik. This is a game that the player uses words to fight enemies. The player then pulls objects and items from teh words to manifest them as real objects in the world. This is a interesting mechanic inside the game. Many of the levels in the games you play are based around puzzle mechanics also using this word to real object functionality. Each level requires a certain puzzle order to do. For example, players might have to get two items to combine them to use to advanced in a level. There are also other puzzle aspects of the game which are opened later in the game, usually shown in the game with golden looking words. There is alot of blood in this game, because it is how the main character uses their abilities. The artwork of the world also looks like a book itself, so the world the characters live in and the book worlds look very similar. Reading about the book worlds is interesting, but some speed reading maybe required because some of the puzzles inside the book worlds are timed and require players to rush to get a XXX word to get a real life world object before it is blocked off. PROS: - A interest puzzle game where players must choose words to manifest into the real world to use. - The story is ok, but not really great. It is what it is. Most people would call it "MEH". - The blood mechanic is interesting, but it may put off younger people off the game for being gross or disgusting. - The game worked fine on Windows 11 OS when i played it. - The game worked with my controller, but for some reason, it had some rubber banding where the player character would face the wrong way sometimes for some reason. CONS: - A short game that is only 4 hours. For some this will be perfect, for others, it maybe considered too short for the price someone can buy it at. - The game feels like it may have alternative choices and paths, but at this point, nobody has found any method to do this. It is believed the game was released half done and why it feels like it can have choices in it, but everyone who has played it, including me, could not figure out any alternative ways to do certain puzzles in the game to try a different route. - Some of the stories of the levels are hard to read because of the timed puzzles require running fast to get XXX item before the enemy on that level blocks players out of getting that item. Still, the story is interesting in some parts. Do I recommend this game? It is ok, but very very short game. I do suggest if it is on sale, it is probably better to buy it. The fact the game has a interesting mechanic using written doesn't really save the game. Due to shortness, a no choice storyline, and a semi expensive 10 dollar price on the store page for the game, this is why i suggest to get it on sale. The blood mechanic may turn off many players for playing the game, especially if they are young or squeamish about lots of blood. In fact the main menu features blood on it even, at a certain point. I did like the game for what it is even if it was short.
Gameplay in Haimrik is absolutely astonishing! I’m usually the type who skips through most of the story and only cares about the basics, but even if you skip the dialogues, you still pick up on the story because it’s told through the gameplay itself - all built around clever wordplay. It’s such a unique concept, and it works brilliantly. Whether you enjoy story-heavy games or not, Haimrik delivers the same level of satisfaction. A true hidden gem!
won this game in a giveaway on SteamGifts 4 years ago. Wish I played it earlier! Still an amazing game in 2025 tho!
It is a great and unique puzzle platformer with great and very bloody humor, but the game loop falls short pretty fast. Pity. Thumbs up because of its uniqueness.
Good idea bad execution
