About
Lock and load, soldier—it's time to bring the pain (or, you know, the sneaky silent takedowns). Gunslugs : Rogue Tactics throws you into a chaotic, ever-changing battlefield straight out of an '80s action flick, complete with explosions, one-liners, and the freedom to play your way.
Stealthy and precise? Avoid cameras, hide in the shadows, and take down enemies one by one like a tactical mastermind. Prefer the classic spray-and-pray method? Grab your biggest gun, kick down the door, and start blasting—because sometimes, the only stealth you need is making sure no one’s left standing.
With procedurally generated levels, no two missions are ever the same. Each failure is just another excuse to blow more stuff up, try a new strategy, or equip a pair of fast shoes and just outrun your problems. From tossing tennis balls to distract guards to setting off a perfectly placed minefield, every encounter is a puzzle… or a fireworks show, depending on your style.
So, what’s it gonna be? Careful infiltration or total carnage? Either way, get to the chopper—or at least try to!
Stealth or Mayhem? – Sneak like a shadow… or go in like an unstoppable action hero.
Mission Variety – Every run throws new objectives your way.
Tactical Shenanigans – Distract enemies with rocks, set traps, or just dropkick them into oblivion.
Loot, Baby! – Stock up on shields, EMPs, helmets, and ridiculous weaponry.
Ever-Changing Battlefields – Procedurally generated levels mean no two missions play the same.
Big Explosions – Because what’s an action game without some good ol’ cinematic BOOM?
No two runs. No boring moments. Just non-stop, action-packed, tactical mayhem. You in?
Underbaked.
Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics is a action platforming game developed by OrangePixel. You play as one of several different characters tasked with completing missions across different levels. I’m not entirely sure what the end goal of the game is as I don’t think it’s stated in the game and I haven’t beaten it. I wasn’t too sure what to expect going into the game, but I was hoping it’d be good. Unfortunately, my fairly short playtime is representative of how much I’ve enjoyed playing the game. I imagine the dev put a fair amount of work into the game, but it just doesn’t quite come together and I would have a hard time recommending it even if it was priced lower (which I do think it should have been).
Positives:

I quite like the overall appearance of the game. The pixel art is pretty well done and I like the character design.
The characters themselves are named after famous action heroes, which I thought was pretty neat.

Negatives:

One of the game’s main issues is that the procedural generation isn’t particularly good. I didn't feel like I was seeing a different level each time I played, it all ends up feeling familiar.
The gameplay isn’t particularly compelling. Essentially, you go through the levels either killing or avoiding enemies and trying to complete three objectives that you’re given. The objectives are usually things like ‘photograph documents’, ‘free prisoners’ and ‘clear towers’, with the first two of those entailing going up to an object and holding down a button. They just aren’t very interesting, and they don’t add much to the rest of the game. The combat isn’t all that enjoyable either, you have one melee weapon and one gun, there’s not much else to say about it.
There’s a fairly significant difficulty spike between the first and second stage. I can’t speak for the rest of the game as I haven’t made it that far, but it seems to me like the second stage either needs to be slightly easier, or some of the things that make it so difficult need to be introduced towards the end of the first stage.
As far as I can tell, the only thing that constitutes ‘rogue-lite sauce’ is the permadeath, there aren’t any unlocks or persistent upgrades as far as I’ve seen. I can’t imagine there’s much replay value once you’ve beaten the game, unless you want all the achievements.
Even if some of the quality of life issues and bugs were fixed, this really doesn’t feel like it should be priced at $15. The scope of it seems to be more along the lines of a $5 game. I guess this is kind of a moot point, since I wouldn’t be recommending it at $5 either, but I figured I’d mention it.
The audio in the game ranges from being mediocre to straight up bad. Many of the sound effects have fairly poor sound quality.

Verdict:
I wanted to like this game, and I hate to be so negative about it, but I did not enjoy my time with it and the negatives significantly outweigh the positives. I feel like this needed more work before it was released. I just can’t recommend it. According to its title, Gunslugs offer nicely done action platforming with tactical and procedural generation possibilities. Higher difficulty with permadeath is great for experienced players. Game needs some bugs-killing updates early after release, but offers a lot of fun in its current state already. #casual For more quick reviews please follow my curator.
It immediately draws comparison to a more cautious, lower budget Broforce... but the slower more pensive pace is not at all backed up by deeper more interesting game mechanics to make the game interesting to think about. Terrain is noisy with lots of awkwardly placed platforms that are annoying to jump on, and less dynamic elements (no exploding parts that blast holes in the terrain, that I saw; not saying they'd have to be explosives, there are lots of kinds of interesting dynamic terrain tiles this game doesn't have in it) Enemies have these tiny little view cones, and sort of bumble towards you if they sense where you are. Not to say that they're easy to kill without getting hurt, though: you get like a dozen hit points, because the enemies will eagerly start shooting you with hard to avoid projectiles at point blank range when you feel like you should have gotten the stealth drop on them.
terrible hitboxes, UI that overflows it's borders, sprites that appears out of bounds, bugged achievements. yep, game is an abysmal cashgrab.
Great pixel combat rogue-like game with loads of various missions together with a good varied enemy lineup, weapons and gadgets/items to keep you addicted. Procedurally generated maps for unlimited replayability
Disclaimer: won this game in a competition, so I didn't pay for it, but did not receive it in exchange for this review. Excellent randomly generated shoot 'em up. Has stealth elements which, while not a major part of the game, do make it much more interesting than just a simple shooter. Difficult, but definitely has the "just one more go" factor. Very simple to pick up with loads to discover as you continue to play through. Has the 8-bit feel that we expect from this dev.
Good game but it's missing controller support, you can disable mouse aiming in options and use Xpadder to map buttons to the pad.
In this video I take a look at Gunslugs 3:Rogue Tactics,* a pixel art stealth action game. I was surprised by how good this title is. It's very well designed and has a great quality to it with smooth, responsive, and entertaining gameplay. It looks like it has been designed to be fun so there is no platformer type painful challenges, it's all about the stealth combat action. You can carry a range of weapons in your inventory, collect coins for the shop and I even had to pick up a body and use it to activate a retinal scanner on a door lock. I didn't get to try it for too long due to time constraints but the quality was apparent so if it looks like the kind of title you may like it shouldn't disappoint. Controller input didn't work with an XBOX one controller... Hard Keyboard controls, got stuck on a game breaking bug.... But still had fun! https://youtu.be/4fMfE1Bucw0
《GunslugsRogue Tactics》
