Guild Wars® Reforged

Old game that the developers have always kept running. And Now, they have a new dev team helping them keep it in guild wars spirit! A great time to play!

Guild Wars has long been a favorite game of mine ever since I started playing shortly after release, hands down this is my favorite game and I have sunk way too many hours into guild wars and gw2. For those looking for a modern action mmo experience this may not be the game for you (it's also not that much like its sequel guild wars 2 if you've played that), but if you enjoy a slower more strategic/tactical style of game then this is worth giving a shot. Combat is slower and more methodical a lot of winning or losing isn't about your ability to dodge enemy skills and land yours, its often decided by the skills you choose to bring. The build craft is loosly inspired by drafting in mtg, you travel around and collect skills, while you can eventually get all of them only 8 can be used at any one time which 8 you choose becomes very important for end game content. It's not one size fits all each skill is better in some situations and worse in others and the skill of the game is found in knowing/figuing which skills are the most useful for the challenges you're facing at that moment. this build craft is for me at least the highlight feature of the game, they give you a lot of freedom to build what you want and its up to you and your creativity to make something of the options given. There are some downsides to note, while the game does look quite good it is from 2005 and its age does show. while they continue to upgrade and update graphics as they can there is only so much that can be done. In addition there playbase is.... awkward lets say. the game isn't dead, far from it, but over the years consolidation has happened, most of the long time EU players hang out in the NA districts as a result a lot of the towns and cities are just devoid of players on EU districts. This isn't a huge problem for playing the game but can lead to some issues if you want to trade or group up with other players. Recommend hopping to NA servers or onto the official discord for lfg and trading. That said if what I said above about the build craft interests you and you want to give it a shot its a great time to get started in the world of Tyria, we've got more active players than we've had since the sequel launched, we've got steam deck support, and we've got new content and balance patches coming out for the first time since the sequel launched, guild wars is in the best state its been in in ages and it's only gonna get more from here. The game isn't for everyone and does have its flaws, but for the people who like it.... they love it. Comment from a friend as I am writing this: "I'm surprised you didn't leave a review before", well every time I saw the prompt from steam to review it I was too busy clicking to play it, and if that isn't a solid endorsement I don't know what is.
