You get what you pay for. Guardian's Oath is a grindy, aesthetically ugly, simplistic action RPG with a completely nonsensical story...but it works. Quick Look: https://youtu.be/ngMhe2T3cnw
My playtime: 20.4h (based on steam, 100% achievement + killing the last boss) Grindy Achievement(s): No (you need to grind to finish the game though). Optional Achievement(s): Yes (2 achievements). Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Guardian's Oath is an action RPG game where you have to grind to kill enemies and level up. There are 3 classes that you can choose although you can still use any weapon and skills despite of your classes. Pros: - Freedom to use any weapon and skills despite of the class - Freedom to decide what to do to level up - Optional bosses to kill - 5 different difficulties Cons: - Performance issues - It can be boring at some point - Minor bugs - Notification for bosses are hard to see
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like to mindlessly do the same thing over and over, this is your game. It might be boring at some point but some things are enjoyable and the game is cheap enough to compensate for that boringness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In-Depth Review

Graphics
The main menu doesn't look captivating to me at all; it's just there for the sake of the game. It looks better after you start playing the game though. The graphics are decent for the price tag although I find that one portal in the last area is hard to notice and some monsters look similar to each other.
Story
The game doesn't have much story in it. You'll see some stories after you start the game and that's it. The game might have some main quests that you can take, but I don't see any correlation with the story at all except for the last part in one of the main quests.
The game
Exploration The game has two main areas: a base and a monster field. There are 2 bases in total where you can buy gears, start main quest, store items, and other things to prepare for your next hunt. Monster fields, as the name suggests, have monsters in it. You can travel between areas through a warp. Classes As I said before, there are 3 classes in this game: Warrior, Archer, and Magician. Each class has different benefits although I don't seem to see any other function aside from that since you can equip any weapon and learn any skills no matter what class you choose. You also can change your classes by paying a certain amount of money. Changing your class will reset your skill and stat points too so you might want to think twice before doing that. Skills There are 9 learnable skills in total. Some skills can only be used if you use a certain weapon. You also can buy some skills if you have used a certain amount of skill points in the learnable skill tree. There's also one skill that can be obtained as a drop from a monster. You can upgrade learnable skills by using skill points that can be obtained by leveling up or finishing a quest. Skills that can be bought can only be upgraded with Talisman, a drop from enemies, while skill that can be dropped from a monster can't be upgraded. Some enemies might also drop a book that has a chance to increase the skill point of a particular skill. Most skills are maxed at level 4. You can reset your learnable skills if you talk to one of the NPC in one of the bases. However, skill points that you learn from the book will be lost forever if you do this. Stats You can increase your stat however you want by spending some stat points. You can have stat points by leveling up or finishing a quest. There's also a way to reset your stat by talking to an NPC. Difficulty The game offers 5 different difficulties that you can choose at the start of the game. The harder the difficulty, the higher the exp and drop chance that you'll get from defeating enemies. I played in normal difficulty. Although the game might be difficult at some point, I didn't have much problem to finish the game. Farming The game's main focus is to farm levels and equip better gear. The game might be boring when you play it in the first few minutes because of this. Somehow, I got hooked after I received a quest and meet difficult enemies though; I become more motivated to level up and finish them. I lost the motivation after I almost reached end-game because leveling is hard and there aren't any quests to do anymore. Quests You can unlock some quests after you reach a certain level. Main quests will usually require you to kill some enemies in waves while optional quests are more varied. However, I find that some optional quests are difficult to understand; there is this quest that requires me to kill an enemy for 20 seconds. I tried to kill the enemy for less and more than 20 seconds and it didn't work. The quest somehow disappears after I load my save the next day though. The quests aren't distributed properly. There were some points where I had a lot of main quests at the same time and some points where I had none at all. I wish there are more of these quests because it makes the game to be not boring that way. Map Scroll Aside from quests and killing enemies, the game also has an item called Map Scrolls. These scrolls allow you to go to an area and kill some monsters in waves if you meet the level requirement. I find a hard time to finish these at some point, but it's fun to play. Bosses The game has a lot of bosses. Some bosses will randomly spawn after you stay in an area for some time, some bosses will automatically fight you after a notification show up, and there's also the final boss that you can only fight by using a scroll. The first bosses are more common. The second bosses are more annoying, especially if you're low-leveled. I was fighting a lot of enemies when the notification shows up and the timer in the notification run out before I can escape. The notification is also kinda hard to see if you're focused on something else (checking your equipment, for example). Although I find that the final boss is challenging, it's taking a lot of time to get the scroll drop. The boss also seems to be buggy since I can't leave the area after I wiped out all of the enemies. Problems I had a lot of minor problems in the game. Sometimes I find that the in-game mouse to be separated from my mouse cursor when I hover it in certain areas. I couldn't click some items in my inventory because of this. It seems to be intermittent though and I need to restart the game a lot of times to fix this. The game also slowed down at some point, especially when there are a lot of enemies on the screen. This might be because of my low-spec device although I can't check it because the processor part in the system requirement is too vague. The game also crashed twice when I played this. I can't seem to reproduce this either so I'm not sure what's happening. Most of the problems are intermittent and don't happen often.
Conclusion
It's a game where you repeatedly kill enemies and upgrade your gear. It might be boring for some people but it might be enjoyable if you just want to play something that doesn't require a lot of thinking. Such a painful experience. There's 3 ways to engage in combat: Melee, Range, and Magic. I went through the game using a sword which felt horrible. The damage felt good but you some enemies just ruined you because of how close you have to get and no ability to block appropriately (There's a shield but the amount of time to raise it inbetween swings makes it impossible to use effectively). The game had potential to be an OK action rpg but the combat was too troublesome to overlook. That alongside the flawed "improvement" system (You can upgrade your weapons/armor like in Maplestory 2 but if you fail once the entire ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing is destroyed). Ontop of that there is NO story whatsoever, the main quests are about a sentence long and repeat every single time. Overall I wouldn't recommend this even as a free product.
While the game mechanics and graphics of the game aren't so good , the gameplay gets you will all it's might , from the start it engulfs you with such greatness. I reccommend playing this game as it is one of my favorites because of the story. The story is verry simple yet verry funny and also captivating from the start , how milions of peaceful aliens invaded the earth full of life and started to co-exist with it, the humans think that the peaceful aliens are planing something so they counterattack . The quest mechanings , battle mechanings and everything else about this game feels refreshing and wonderful and it wants you to play more and more , I've go hours in this game and I'm still not sick of it . The best part about it is that it's cheap and darn good
АХХАХАХХАХ, ЧЕЛ ВЗЯЛ ПЭИНТ И НАРИСОВАЛ ЧЕЛИКОВ. Я конечно понимаю что это 30 рублей, но за такое отдавать деньги не хочется.
Guardian's Oath is an older game from 2016. It's a venerable 8 years old at the time of this review. It's a simple but very poorly made 2D top down brawler with some RPG/adventure game elements (you have a simple inventory, can swap weapons and so on). I can't stress enough that this is very clunky and amateurish, it lacks polish, looks bad and plays worse. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, and it's hard to say if this is due to the age of the assets used, if it's a deliberate attempt for the game to look bad/retro on purpose, or if the assets are just, well, terrible looking. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game in 2024, such poor quality 2D graphics in the 3D era just aren't good enough, whether it's a deliberate design fault on behalf of the developer or they just couldn't manage to do any better, this is a compromise gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Nodamex has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam? Guardian's Oath is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Neat little game for some quick fun.
Terrible. Looks like some pre-flash shockwave game. The gameplay is clunky, and there's no way to rebind the keys, which is essential if you're left handed like me.
I tried to attack, couldn't, and just kept dying. :/ The mechanics could use some major refining.
Fun little game made with GameMaker from Jojo ^_^ preaty simplistic and has some vaiaty of levels/dungeons/missions. Has 3 classes and 4 different weapons Skill system is bit of ♥♥♥♥♥ in my opinion, but still is quite nicely made. For the price of the game in comparison with what I got, I will rate 7.5/10. Good Luck and have fun guys ^_^
