«Guardian»
Despite not making a strong first impression, Guardian is a competent game in Metroidvania genre. Player assumes the role of Skye, an amnesiac enforcer of goddess Esara, tasked to collect 8 crystal shards in order to defeat Inos, a rival deity. From there, the story goes down a fairly predictable, but enjoyable path. Skye starts out incredibly weak, given only 4 HP and armed with a puny projectile weapon. This makes the game's difficulty primarily front-loaded, as for the first three worlds the game remains particularly stingy on upgrades. However, once the player starts to accumulate power-ups, things become a lot more tolerable. In structure, Guardian most closely resembles Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, where it has several large zones strung together by an overworld map, and to finish the game each area would need to be fully explored, requiring multiple visits. Each zone has at least two boss encounters, one yielding a new ability for the player, and the other, a useless crystal shard to appease your deity. Infrequently, the game also resorts to the tried and true “kill all enemies in the room” method of progress gating, but thankfully, once cleared, those rooms remain empty henceforth. In order to facilitate exploration and provide reasons to revisit areas, the game uses “skeleton keys”. Each new door requires an ever-increasing number of them, but opening one will not take keys away from the player. This means that the number of keys, in actuality, is your “key level”. Other doors can be opened by special attacks and elemental magic. Magic, in particular, isn't all that useful in any other context, as for most of the game Skye can only cast it once or twice before needing to grind enemies to replenish her MP bar. Moreover, when used in combat the spells are weak and have inconvenient attack paths. In the beginning of my first run through the game I was frustrated beyond all reason, mostly because my player was so weak, I barely had a chance to try a new strategy before getting murdered, but as time went on and her health increased, I came to grips with the controls and oddities of game design. On my second playthrough I breathed through the early areas. After nearly 20 hours and two complete play-throughs I am finally done with Guardian. All in all, it's an enjoyable, if flawed, game. A lot of its downsides can be traced back to the developer's choice of middleware – Construct 2, the package one wants to use if they want that “made with sticks and duct tape” look and feel. In my two playthroughs I have twice been hit by progress-blocking bugs, but the developer has patched those up since. For all of its janky lack of polish, Guardian still has plenty of heart and a very earnest quality to it, not to mention decent presentation and plenty of content.
A very fun, if somewhat short and buggy, Metroidvania. Not quite as short as the 3 hours on my record implies though. Due to the aforementioned bugs, I spent much of my time playing outside of Steam, and the time the game itself reports on my save file is 6.5 hours - and that probably doesn't account for time lost to restarts at checkpoint. So let's get the bugs out of the way first. First, Steam Client would refuse to launch the game after I've quit it once, unless I rebooted my PC. Thankfully the game can launch just fine from it's installation directory without Steam Client, which is how I played most of it. Unfortunately this means, despite getting 100% in-game completion, the most of the Steam achievements remain locked for me, and even Steam Achievement Manager was no help in resolving the matter. I also encountered 1 game breaking bug, thankfully early on. I was barely able to use the dash ability to get into an area I wasn't supposed be able to get to yet - something I only realized after spending an hour trying to get OUT of that area. Unfortunately that proved to be impossible without the ability that should have been the only way to get there in the first place. Since I had activated the checkpoint in that area, that playthrough was kaput, and I had to start over from the beginning. Thankfully this was near the beginning of the game - it literally took far less time to retrace my progress than I had spent figuratively banging my head against the wall in that inadvertent trap. If you check the Steam Discussions for this game, other people have encountered other gamebreaking bugs forcing start overs. Because of that, I got the habit of manually backing up the game's user data directory (AppData\Local\Guardian\User Data) to avoid the risk of having to start over. It turned out to not be necessary, for me anyway - I completed the game having only encountered 1 more bug which was fixed but simply killing the game with ALT+F4 and only cost me a few minutes of progress when I restarted from the checkpoint point. There was one even smaller bug during a boss fight where for some reason the Guardian kept falling through floor in a loop, but I managed to maneuver her to more stable ground and proceeded to finish the fight. So you're probably wondering why I'm recommending this game with all its technical issues. The answer is because I really enjoyed it despite the bugs. As usual with Metroidvanias, the player character starts pretty weak, and a few blows from enemies is enough to send you back to the checkpoint. As you progress, you'll grow stronger, especially so if you revisit previously cleared zones and use your newly found abilities to enter previously blocked ares where you'll find upgrades to your max health, damage, and spells. And the more health you have, the more health is restored by the potion bottles liberally dropped by enemies. The story is engaging, even if it's not very complex, and there is a good variety of enemies and spells and abilities. The controls were good and responsive with the 360 controller, but I did not try the keyboard controls so cannot comment on those. The automap was very useful. It shows all the rooms you've been in, how they connect to each other, if there are any not-yet-collected upgrades/keys in them, and if the exits are blocked by spell-locked doors which require one of the 4 spells in the game to unlock. The doors are color coded depending on the spell needed, and these colors show up on the automap so that once you find the spell in question, you can cycle through the maps of previously visited levels and see where you might want to revisit to pick up new loot. Unfortunately the spell-locked doors are the only obstacles shown on the automap, so you'll need to make your own notes or remember if this specific treasure in that specific room is blocked by a rock wall, or a platform too high to jump, or a bunch of sky rings, etc. One of my favorite features is that falling into a bottomless pit only does 1-2HP worth of damage and starts you back at the beginning of the room - without respawning any enemies you've killed. The enemies only respawn when you leave the room and come back. Once you get a few health and damage upgrades, Guardian actually becomes a bit on the easy side, which is just fine by me, and, well, nobody FORCES you to collect all the health and damage upgrades like I did. Still, with full upgrades, the final boss fight turned out to be one of the easiest of all the bosses.
In the few minutes that I played it, I could tell this game was far from finished.
Very basic and looks like like an amateur try at a metrodvania game. I guess this low price is okay but I still wouldn't recommend it as there are tons of other games worth playing.
This is a very nice game, a split-map metroidvania (i.e. something like Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia) with great music and an intriguing setting. It has a story premise/setting vaguely similar to that of Valdis Story: Abyssal City (whose soundtrack this game's music reminds me of), but a storytelling tone that's maybe a little more similar to Momodora III or Reverie under the Moonlight. The artwork for the sprites and (particularly) the backgrounds is beautiful, and the gameplay is reasonably fast-paced, making even backtracking pretty fun. As of right now (2019-01-22), the game still needs some polish (particularly with regards to some bugs, but maybe also rewording the script a little), but is definitely fully playable and enjoyable (and I can confirm that all the achievements work), thanks to the dev fixing bugs reported on the game's forum. (Disclosure: I bought this game on the Steam store when it was discounted.)
Better than I expected it to be! :) :) :)
This game has potential. Unfortunatly the bugs and glitches make for a frustrating play. For example: There are random points where you fire into an invisible barrier in front of you that prevents hitting the enemy. The Air Dash is a bit hit and miss. When fighting the first boss (three times) I got hammered. On the fourth attempt I thought it was going to go the same way then suddenly around a third of its health dissapeared and it died. The main character sprite can freeze or go into a random frame. I E going into a rolling frame even while stood still firing. If the Devs resolved these issuses then it could be a decent game, but as the game has been out for some time it doesn't look promising which is a shame!
