Suspect that this game can be a lot of fun. So far it's just been frustrating trying to figure out how to do things as the documentation on what/how to do things is very limited. Unfortunately there is no joystick support and keyboard flying seems to be impossible (no way to increase the throttle with just a keyboard?). I resorted to using an x-box controller to fly which worked out semi-okay but I still died a lot due to lack of controllability. Also as far as flight-physics go the super cub that they have you flying glides really, really well compared to real life which makes engine outs kind of fun, but landing very difficult. Have so far died due to crashing the plane and due to lack of "eye", which I think is sleep? Also to those reading this that don't know, it took me forever to figure out how to start the plane; press and hold "I" for a good long while.
Great concept but unplayable in it's current state. 1) No settings / ability to change control input & configuration 2) Main menu does not recognize mouse input 3) Very bare bones (which is understandable since it is still in early access) 4) Flight dynamics are not great to say the least The game has potential and hopefully the devs work on improving. But I would recommend waiting to purchase as of now
The game has issues with basic PC Peripherals. - Main menu does not recognize mouse & keyboard input when joystick or xbox controller is plugged in. There is zero options for joystick configure. Edit: The game received a patch that states to have fixed some of these issues. - Game was refunded before this patch. Suggest review recent game updates. - Still leaving as negative review for now.
The pros: As of 2025-02-16 my experience with the game has been mostly positive. Since Groundfall has been in the EA category for a few years now, progress has been intermittent. It's one person developer has of course, life to contend with in creating this 'little treat' that any large team would likely shrug off. That being said, there is definitely a lot of effort that went into this project. I fills a niche that it allows you to play the roll of a short take-off or landing (STOL) bush pilot. Anyone who liked the TV series about 'Worst places to be a pilot' could find their itch scratched. There is a survival mode option that can be toggled on or off at a whim, that adds depth to gameplay. There are many landing challenges in the game that will tax your abilities as well as your plane. There are in field repair options (if you have tool box's) Supplies loaded on board your plane and in personal inventory, ensure whether or not any journey will be successful. Good chill value if you want to have a virtual camping experiences at various altitudes or on beaches. Weather events, day/night, on foot exploration, building tree. The cons: Graphically the game is surprisingly well done considering it appears to rely on an older version of the Unity engine. I can 'almost' ignore that, still wish that could be updated. Although the game is set-up for gamepads, it also (thankfully) supports HOTAS. I found configuring external views was difficult to set up on my throttle ministick and there was no support for hat switch views or pans on the joystick. I ended up doing most of my flying and landings in external view behind the plane. There is an update by the developer pending to add instrument values to this view, which will be most welcomed. (edit: Has now been added) The rudder control seems to undo it's yaw after release and makes it difficult to use for landing approaches. (This is my largest criticism atm and hope this can be resolved. Otherwise banking to position on runways will be the only alternative.) I will end further criticism at this point because I have not yet fully explored the game and also because Groundfall is EA and a WIP. I wish the Dev success and look forwards to improvements at whatever pace he is able to deliver. I do enjoy the game - and despite some issues at this point, would recommend. Will update review as improvements occur.
For a game that came out last night, not too bad. It needs some work, but it has a future as long as the dev sticks to it. Getting past the singleplayer tutorial can be a bit of a pain and there's a lot of bugs, but there's a lot of potential for this game.
I got the game for the flight aspect. The menus are clumsy, and I don't feel like the controls are working appropriately. I can move items like the gun and hatchet to the backpack, but I cannot get them back into his hands to be used. It seems like there are several pieces that are just not working like they should. I can't get out of the plane without using the mouse to look at the door then pushing E. Using a controller seems to possibly be limiting the gameplay. Hope the game improves.
I think this game has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see where it goes. I love pilot games, but I get bored just flying around. I love this idea, it'll give me purpose to the flights. Some tips for new players that helped me out a lot: One the training map, don't worry about the missions. Just fly to all the landing strips to proceed to the next map. When you land, make sure to reset your flaps to align with the wings. There's a bug that will make the position when you leave your plane the standard position. So you can't get your flaps level again until you respawn your plane. This makes flying very difficult if not impossible. Pay attention to your stamina. If you run out, it will start depleting your health. Go back to the home base to sleep. I slept at a random cabin once, and when I respawned I was there, but my plane was not. Avoid flying at night. The lighting might seem good enough, but in a flash it can change to complete darkness. This game is in a rough state currently, but I still find it to be a ton of fun. If you have any interest in a game like this, please support the dev with a purchase.
There should be (at least) three types of flying games out there. But, alas, there is mostly only two of them: the flight simulators with high learning curves and extremely high level of realism on one side. And on the other side, there is a massive amount of dog fight, war games, shooters. What is missing is peaceful, funny, interesting flying games. Games where the flying and the fun of flying (take off, landing, flying, manoevering, missions in the air, ...) is in focus. These games rarely exist. I like GroundFall for trying to be one rare pearl we miss in flying games: A game where you have small islands with small runways and small planes. You take off, fly around, land, but you can also run around in person to do stuff. There will be interesting missions. Sometimes your landing won't be optimal and your plane takes damage, but then you will be able to repair it and go on. The game could be giving us hours of charming and interesting time with planes, flying, exploring and fulfilling missions - with a decent amount of realism to make it feel real, but not feeling like in a complicated simulator flying for hours across an ocean. While you can opt-in to add survival to make it more challenging, the game will not turn into a war or dog fighting game, but stay rather peaceful and focussed on the flying and enjoyable parts. It is still in development, needs some fixing and enhancements here and there, and still needs content, but the basics already work, and the game looks promissing and is pursued actively again. I hope the developer keeps up the motivation and ideas to - step by step - evolve and complete this game. The plans include different planes or plane parts, adding different flight characteristics, interesting missions, good tutorials, and - for the survival fans - also survival, gathering and crafting stuff. For now, you can already enjoy some take-off, flying, landing, ... and crashing ;-)
Developer is working on making it better, at first I was not enjoying it but they have already added controller support and hopefully they will continue to make it better. I will keep an eye on this and see where it goes.
Just a note, my HOTAS works find in including the throttle and rudder, so some reviews are out of date.
