IndieGems Curator
Early Access Conundrum
The world of early access titles is always a strange conundrum. On one hand there is the beautiful and worthwhile experience of being a part of a project as it grows and improves and being there to support the developer every step of the way. On the other hand though; you are bound to run into bugs, disappointments, and things that just need work. Grimm & Tonic is as it currently stands a bit too short and riddled with a fair dosage of typos to justify the asking price of ten dollars. That being said; the ambitions of this project show promise of easily shaping up to be worth the asking price. The game is currently only one chapter long which will take a little over a half an hour to get through. You will meet eight different characters out of the currently planned 25 and go through introductory conversations with them. There are a total of six episodes planned with some b-sides and side stories sprinkled throughout. The story is interesting thus far and it will be great to see how well it develops. The art style is also really nice. Characters feel diverse enough to provide ample entertainment. This is excellent since conversation and drink prepping seem to be the two main elements of the game.
Ambitious Projects Have Shown Return From Promises Before
Some projects get too ambitious and have a hard time meeting demands. Some projects over the course of their early access work everything out and turn out to be an excellent title. The developer hopes to have this title completed by the end of 2019. It is listed as having no intention of changing the price upon full release. Hopefully all the development and patches over early access period goes well and this game turns out to be a fantastic indie gem well worth the price. I will update this review to better reflect my opinion as more content is released. As enjoyable and promising as this looks like it can be; I just can't currently justify the asking price for the amount and current quality of the content.
A pretty short yet interesting VN about your new work as bartender for the Death. I encourage you to try every options to learn about the characters since a good chunck of them are regular who know each other which will help you both to know what drink to give them but also how to discover where the hell is Saul.
Interesting, albeit very short little game on the first playthrough. The intro and general narrative premise are pretty cool, sort of an afterlife variation of the idea of VA-11 HALL-A, with very simplified mechanics: - The conversation choices mostly small talk, instead of than trying to gauge people by introvert versus extrovert for small versus direct conversation. - The interactive choices mostly boil down to picking a drink out of a book. The game stumbled pretty hard partway through: - One of the patrons enables a hidden menu in the drink book, but you're dissuaded from looking in that direction before the patron arrives or or after the patron leaves, and therefore have to rely on your boss telling you to look there. - Immediately after, I ran into some really funky UI behavior with a woman who demanded a "drink" when prompted, but then insisted she asked for a daquiri when I gave her the wrong drink. After making the daquiri, the conversation options stopped working and I could only throw drinks at her until she left, then needed to jump into and out of the Options menu to display the UI to move on to the next patron. The combination of those two put a pretty sour taste in my mouth, and crossed with the short, simple nature of the game, I'm not a big fan of the game in its current state and price. However, it is an early access game, and may evolve significantly into a real fun, creative idea. The promise is definitely there, it's just going to take some work. I would love to see more development into the patron interaction and the drink system. For patron interaction, I found that the current game boils down to a loop of "Small Talk" > One option > Repeat until drink is asked for > Pick a drink > Jump to "Small Talk"; I'd like to see some more conversation options, and probably remove the "Direct Question"/"Small Talk" options by hoisting the single nested option in each into their place. For the drink system, more information about the drinks would be a good start, but I believe there's room for UX design in the Drink Grimoire to improve the interaction with that system.
Grimm & Tonic Episode 1 in Early access. This game is beautiful to look at. The game play looks basic but there has been a lot of work put in to making player choices change the track of the game. There is more work needed to complete the game and SpriteWrench are doing that work. SpriteWrench are listening to player requests and seem to be willing to engage with their audience. I can see this game becoming a favourite of mine as it grows.
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
Grimm & Tonic is a visual novel mixed with a light bartender simulator. The premise of the game is that you have died without having a soul, which means that Death/Grim Reaper cannot decide if you should go to heaven or hell. This results in you becoming a bartender in a purgatory-esque bar. The game starts off promising, but once the setting has been established and the bartending begins, the game becomes unbelievably repetitive. Maybe this is intentional and is meant to invoke what purgatory might feel like, but it is still a chore to play. Every customer interaction is the same, with them telling you what kind of drink they want, you clicking the drink they want on your drink list, and then them leaving. The game’s writing, even early in the game, is hit or miss. It often feels stilted and awkward, as if it was translated too literally from a different language. It gets extremely formulaic in the bartending sections as well. Overall, it’s a game with a strong idea that is executed in an awful way. It would need a complete overhaul for it to become playable for more than 15 minutes. 2/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
This game is great for clearing your mind after a long day. I've gone through the story a few times trying different options for different results. It's quirky I'd reccomend but its not for everyone.
Listen, right, this is fantastic. The world is interesting, the characters are fleshed out, and the art itself is fantastic to see. I love the style of Death, its new and not the typical "Bag-o-bones" look. I am so excited to see more of this game and to actually support the developers and writers. There is not much to it right now, but that is how writing works. You get a chapter done and then you need to drink a whole bottle of [Alcohol] while you wait for brain to work hardenough to make words go. I love the potential, but I also love what there is. Buy this. There is not much now, but all plants start as a seed or a bulb or sometimes a different plant? Sometimes you get animals who ate a berry and wandered off, let the call of nature have its call, and then that berries seeds grew from that pile of excrement. That was a bad analogy, but you get the point. Its going to be good, it is good, just give good things time.
Interesting Start.

now first off im going to say people who reviewed the game really dont know how to review this game. I feel like people are looking at is as for example of another game cyber punk. when you look at the price difference this game is much cheaper and with that being said more people would have a positive review rather than negative. the art style in the game I enjoyed but at times it can be a little to much for the human eyes but the story line is good as it was very funny. meeting people in a bar and you have no soul but growing it from them is a very good concept and thats the main point of the game. this is a story line game that unlike big names can be played causally. you sit down for an hour or so and dont have to worry about fighting or anything like that. the only negative i have is that I wish death played a bigger role and you got to know him more and the end was a bit sudden. it is good short and simple and easy.
