I wanted to like this game. I loved GRIME; the environment, the parrying, the ambiance, the soundscape and music tracks, the world building and characters were all incredibly memorable. A world clearly built and sculpted by the beings living there, while also hinting at something much larger and older, shown by the environment, or described by the oldest/wisest of the beings. I replayed GRIME several times and loved it each time. But GRIME II just feels like an extremely bloated version of everything. Map and Movement: The map is excessively huge and mostly empty. Movement is frustrating and tedious; maybe if the map was smaller, or less arbitrarily maze-like it wouldn't be so frustrating. Because the map is so large and sprawling, it is very difficult to recognize where you need to go, where you are even able to go Fighting: All Enemies have a dozen different moves, the attacks are very slow, and they all look very similar. Makes it extremely difficult to predict what they are actually about to do next. Too many attack methods: Parry isn't very effective because of above. Add in multiple different types of pulls, and also a dash type attack that cannot even be used because it's only used by enemies that are taller than us.... It's a lot to have to try to keep up with. Miss any of the enemy attacks and the enemies can spam attack you and kill you in just a few hits. Too many enemies stacked on top of each other: Once you've struggled through the brutal platforming and long empty hallways, you find yourself in a small area with at three tall and large enemies that can all kill you in just a few hits. GRIME II feels like I'm fighting the game at all times rather than exploring or sparring with enemies.

VERY ADDICTED
I'm still unsure whether I like this one more or less than the first Grime but the gameplay is a big step up, overall feeling more fluid and with quality of life improvements to things like the item system and stamina. Molds are also a pretty cool addition, though I'm not a fan of how the trait/hunt system of the first game was changed to a skill tree that feels more narrow and limited in how it affects your build. The visuals and music are just as good, even if I prefer the atmosphere and story of 1.
backtracking in this game sucks ass, i get turbo punished for exploring the areas in a different order than what the dev wanted or something. The bosses also feel like a downgrade compared to the first one, they're just boring.
i enjoyed it
TLDR: Still a very fine MV, but Grime 1 was better. There's a few things I really didn't like about Grime II, which the first game did better. First of all, I didn't use any of the "forms" in the entire playthrough, since they felt useless. They are too slow, too weak, and underwhelming in what they do. Since this is pretty much the main skill mechanic, that's not good. The skill tree for the hunting points was also disappointing. Most of the stuff there was just not interesting. Traversal can get VERY annoying, because many parts of the maps are designed in a way that simply don't allow you to travel through them quickly, even after you got all the abilities. You constantly need to stop and do this charge jump that takes an eternity to charge up, and then there's all these obstacles that you must bypass by "flowing" through the wall, which felt very clusmy to pull off. Then you have cases where you can traverse a section only from one direction - no going back the other way, but the minimap doesnt show this. Finally, when going downwards, the camera doesn't adjust at all and you have like 1 feet between your character and the bottom of the screen. Good luck trying to react to spikes on the ground with this. I wanted to 100% all sections, but since the traversal was so annoying I just gave up on that. Grime 1 was way more fun to move around in. And my god, these games must stop making you walk from a checkpoint back to a boss when you failed the fight. It's so pointless. Grime 1 had this too though, but my patience for this goes down with every MV that I play. Especially when there is NOTHING between the checkpoint and the boss in terms of enemies or challenging platforming, as is the case with Grime II. it's just a bit of walking and jumping. BOOOORING. What's so hard about a simply screen "retry" or "back to checkpoint" when you die to a boss? Because of this, I didn't beat the final boss, even though the walk to it is the quickest in the game, just a few seconds. But I tend to skip the final boss in MVs in general - since I know there is no reward and nothing more to do afterwards. I don't need to see the credits roll. But if there was a simply immediate retry option, that could have motivated me to keep trying. Aside from all that, Grime II is mainly more of Grime. Which is a good thing. I will still give this a thumbs up, but if you haven't played Grime 1 yet - go with that instead. At least I had a better time with the first game.
Its ok for a $20 game. They've had Two interesting Areas out of the Five so far, the enemies are pretty boring, and the bosses are fast paced but the mechanics just do not keep up. I spent more time platforming than fighting and its just boring. They want you to go back and fourth to areas but they don't mark the map with areas were you need something like a wall jump or double dash. So you just wonder around trying to find where you saw that thing so you can go back and wall jump up it. Combat is super easy just parry and its an instant win.
It's more Grime. It's bigger, prettier, bigger, more character build choices, a LOT bigger. Did I mention it's bigger? Grime II is as long as Grime 1's NG and NG+ combined. There's also a story difficulty mode now, and I think the developers took that as license to make the whole game harder. Grime II feels like Grime 1's NG+ difficulty. Grinding for stats is also easier now though, so you can outlevel the extra difficulty eventually if needed. No worries about a teeth phobia this time. A lot of hands instead.
