About
Grim Tides blends tabletop RPG adventure, dungeon crawling and roguelike mechanics, and a classic turn-based combat system into something that feels equally like a solo tabletop campaign or a choose-your-own-adventure book. Detailed worldbuilding, abundance of lore and hand-drawn artwork make every run feel like a story in its own right.

"What is the price of knowledge? What is the price of power that comes with it?"

As major factions and powers that be converge around you, you have a tough choice to make: will you be a simple puppet involved in a sinister plot beyond your understanding? Or will you take your fate into your own hands? Whatever your decision, it could have consequences far beyond your wildest imagination, because the hidden depths of the Isles' ancient jungles hide a secret so terrible, it could spell doom of the world itself.

Decent game but objectively i cannot recommend. Pros Indie Developer - All for support those with passion and genuine desire to deliver a quality product Story Rich - Effort has been taken to develop lore and a story around the title. If you are prepared to read it Bug Free - In my 6-7 hours of playing I did not encounter any bugs Price point - At £5 its worth a punt Cons Gameplay is repetitive - Typical game play is to click your way around a map find (many) encounters, and the occasional quest item Progression is too slow - many of which are to easy and don't provide much xp and the mini boss fights are too far between. lots of reading - Be prepared to read. Feedback to Devs The need to click on "Wages" to get a token amount of money seemed superfluous and detracts from immersion. I didn't get far enough into the game to understand the reason for the ship mechanic. The constant depletion of ship health outside of combat again detracted from the immersion of the game. The shop mechanic didnt quite fulfil its purpose IMO. Mostly I was buying health potions (this was good), but otherwise quest items for XP. The items provided were mostly useless after a few levels, this should be looked at to provide more relevance to the game Crafting seemed weak. As far as i could tell all craftable items were available at the beginning of the game. It would be better to create a blueprint style progression system here. Hope this helps some people feel more informed or even the developers to improve the mechanics. I see there is passion from the developers would like to see this improved.
Alright. Grim Tides is an interesting case of a mobile title being ported to PC (mostly) properly. The actual story writing is pretty decent, and the gameplay is all perfectly functional. However, this game is also the very definition of RPG bloat, with sooooo much content padding. Which ultimately makes it super grindy and kind of boring. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3518811866 The story itself is pretty simple (but as mentioned, also reasonably well written and definitely the star of this show). You, some random Joe, had a cursed tattoo placed on you by the head Sage in your kingdom. Functionally the same as a Geas spell from old school AD&D. It compels you to do his bidding or die, more or less. And his bidding is that you track down a group of rogue Sages in an Archipielago. And so, you set off to your hub town, which is basically a pirate port, to go do exactly that. And while none of that sounds particularly compelling, as mentioned twice now, the writing is actually pretty decent. Which is entirely necessary since the gameplay is pretty meh. In your hub town, you have a lot of services, from a shipbuilder to an alchemist to a tavern with quest board, and so on. Basically, everything you might need to do between missions can be done here. There is also an arena to earn some bonus xp and cash. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3518565648 From there, you will set off on your mission by exploring unlocked locations. Initially, they're on the same island, but eventually you will unlock your ship and be able to travel to new islands in pursuit of the rogue Sages. Along the way, you will meet the native peoples and plenty of monsters besides. So, when you land, you are treated to a grid map which you will need to explore by clicking on adjacent squares which moves you there and reveals anything that might be in that square, until you have either: died, retreated (for a cost in gold), or found the intended exit. In between, you will fight, find random events, and maybe even find journal pieces left behind by the rogue sages or Memory Stones left behind by ancient native people. The journal pages serve to expand the story and give you some XP. The Memory Stones offer the stored memory of a long dead native, after which you will gain a permanent buff of some sort. Landing on a combat square opens up a pretty simplistic turn-based JRPG style combat page. You have a basic attack, special attacks, spells, items, and retreat options. Depending on what is in your inventory. Special attacks and spells can be purchased and upgraded back in the hub town btw, and some are definitely better than others. The one that gives you a chance to disintegrate your enemy AND stuns them for two rounds if they aren't disintegrated is particularly powerful. Anyway, you just duke it out until you or your enemies win. After which you earn some XP, gold, and maybe an item as well. As for you, in addition to potential special abilities and spells, and whatever equipment you have, you have some stats to track while on your adventures. Hit Points, Morale, and Supplies. Morale is how well you hold up in the face of adversity, basically. It is depleted by taking crits, and when it reaches zero, you immediately flee back to the hub town. Supplies are your food and water, and every square depletes one. However, it also heals you at least 1 HP per square moved. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3518940833 There is a decent variety of enemies, but they more or less do the same stuff. They're warriors, rogues, and spellcasters. Regardless of the enemy type. Some have different specialties, but it boils down to that. And all of that is fine. But you have to go on at least 15 expeditions to get to the story boss before the story advances. So, levels 15 and 30 of an area. And you can only do one level per expedition. This is where the grinding and content padding reveals itself. I'm currently on like my 90th expedition, and I guarantee there are at least 45-60 more to go, bare minimum. And since the regions change, but the levels more or less remain the same, this becomes very boring very quickly. I guess this was meant to be played a couple levels at a time on your phone, and I can see how it would work perfectly for that, but on PC, where you may be inclined to play more, this becomes quite a slog. Even when you become OP, which happens pretty quickly, it still starts to feel like a robotic chore rather than a fun gaming experience. IDK. Technically, this game does what it sets out to do perfectly well, but it is poorly suited to PC gaming due to how the game is structured. Although, if you're playing on your Steam Deck while you're on the go, I would imagine this would be a more favorable experience. I'm going to give it a positive rating, but with the caveat that this game is not really intended to be played as a PC game. It's intended to be played as a mobile game. Definitely a budget rpg, but it doesn't mean its bad. The thoughtfulness and creativity required to make a game on a budget means more care and variety is put into other areas (such as mechanics, world building and presentation) that would otherwise just go into the graphical budget for most AAA games with maybe half the thoughtfulness and charm. The graphics are still pretty pleasant for what it is which seems to be a marked improvement over the original. This game has alot of rpg choose your own adventure style events in the dungeon. I'm a sucker for rpgs and if you are too give this a try. This game is a bit of a gem in the rough.
Lovely turn-based, intricate CRPG dungeon crawler to admire and enjoy! Per usual with this dev (named Monomyth, created Grim Quest as well, another stellar RPG offering), this is great stuff here, with plenty of RPG pillars nailed solidly down in an interesting, island-type world to explore! Very cool character development with a lot of factors you can customize and different ways to approach combat, it really begs for a party-based approach at some point! Alas, it is singleplayer, but there's plenty to do and see here, a BUNCH of unique and interesting dungeons to delve, world events and more, and worth every penny (and more, imo!) Thanks for another awesome CRPG, Monomyth! Will definitely be playing this much more as time moves on. :)
A noticeable improvement over the last game called Grim Quest of which I played for about 50 hours on my phone. The combat is simple, but deep enough with skill trees, including various moves for various weapon types and magic skills. Levelling is satisfying, with a wide variety of perks. Buying ship perks ( restoring morality, health, revealing enemies on tiles etc.) is very useful and serves to improve survivability in the dungeons. Great music, with some new songs in the PC version if i am not wrong. The absolute best though is the writing. Great use of english with appropriate language. I looked forward to reading the journals and tablets of the Mua Ta ( with great sketches and permanent bonuses for each). After you are done with the main story, there is a decent bit of content. One of the best games, especially considering that this is an indie game. Would love to see what the dev could do with a bigger budget. Sretno!
This game is a definite improvement from the original, Grim Quest. So much more rpg elements and character depth to delve yourself into. Character choice chance depending on your stats, as well as background adds an amazing layer to the game. Overall, if you liked Grim Quest, you'll LOVE Grim Tides.
Simple and casual rpg style game with plenty to discover. I enjoy it on mobile as well, it's a good place to give it a try before you buy. Definitely recommend to anyone who needs a casual adventure game that you can put down whenever you need to and pick right back up whenever you want to. It's also fun to play during long queue times in other games since it isn't demanding at all (specs).
Played it for months on my phone. Take note: this is not just a mobile game, but a true RPG developed by a die-hard fan of the genre. Love the game so much I wanted to support it here too, as it is just as good on PC as it is in the original version.
I enjoyed playing. It's very similar to Grim Quest in a lot of ways, but there are some newer mechanics that are interesting. If you like grinding games, then you'll probably get a lot of hours out of this. I wish there was a little more complexity to the game, though. Some more rpg elements like npcs with dialogue skill checks or even mercenaries you can hire and take with you in the dungeons would be really interesting. Also, I found myself wishing there was more to do once you get to around 200 in-game days. More arena milestones up though level 50, for example. More optional bosses to incentivize going beyond level 24 in any given dungeon. Stuff like that. The lore is really well written as always, though. Nice to find out what happened before the events of Grim Quest. :)
