If you want to play a Rust clone in VR, just play Strayed. There are zero upsides to playing Grim over Strayed. When you hit trees or stone nodes with your rock, it's completely fine, but the moment you get a tool, 50% of those swings won't register. The building controls on the blueprint are a nightmare. I was trying to build a simple 2x1 with an airlock and it took me 5 minutes. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. The state this game is in right now is terrible compared to the indie dev team on Strayed, which did 100x better.
just get strayed.
The tutorial was a chore. A game like this should be intuitive and not require a manual. Id rather be thrown into it completely blind and be eaten by space bears than sit through a text-filled tutorial in VR.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & impressions here: https://youtu.be/AMkNDtF3E6k Grim isn't an awful game. The problem with Grim is that this full release, feels more like a clunky Early Access release. There's also much better survival games in VR. This would be near the bottom of survival games in VR. There's a lot of tedium and clunkiness involved. There may also be brief fun moments in between, but a lot more tedium and boredom than anything else. To craft you basically just navigate a menu with point and click mechanics. To gather enough wood, you'll usually have to chop, then chop some more, then chop even more. Eventually, you'll notice that if you chop too fast, several chops will not register. You have to chop in rhythm, slowly enough to almost put you to sleep. Then point and click on a menu, while you wait for it to craft. Then you'll choose a dial menu where you further make improvements. Is that too immersive for ya? Probably not. The visuals are Quest-ified. I had everything on max. Good news is that on my RTX 5090, I was getting a steady 90 fps (Unreal Engine 5). The bad news is that the game looks like crap no matter what you do. Just ugly looking game. Uninspired, generic visuals that are muddy and low-texture. You'll believe you're playing the Quest stand-alone version and not the PCVR version. Lastly, there's only about 2-3 servers with enough people to actually make the game entertaining. Regardless, if you're a new player, you're likely to only come across way better geared players. You'll be fighting assault rifles with a bow & arrow, if you're lucky. Otherwise, just a rock. game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. CWS is a 1 hit wonder company.
One of the worst games and gaming communities I've experienced in 30 years of gaming. Not only is it bad enough that the servers are reset every week, which makes no sense at all, but no! If you go to the official Discord to ask if this is the case, and if so, why, and whether it will be changed because so many people are complaining about it, you are personally attacked on Discord, verbally abused, and insulted, even by the Discord owner. I've been through a lot, but this? Unbelievable! I'll never have this game on my computer again, even if I were paid to play it.
Wouldnt play this if it was free
I had high hopes for GRIM VR given the long development time and the reputation of CWS Studio. Unfortunately, this game is an enormous disappointment. The graphics are genuinely disgusting - muddy textures, poor models, and environments that feel like they were thrown together with no care. Even worse, the performance is still subpar, struggling to maintain stable framerates on an RTX 5090 and a high-speed SSD setup. There's no excuse for this level of optimization failure. Sound design is almost non-existent, making the world feel even emptier and more lifeless. Basic sound cues you would expect in any VR game are either missing or so poorly mixed that they might as well not exist. The official Discord community offers no real help either - questions are often ignored or met with dismissive attitudes. It feels like the players are left completely on their own. It's shocking that a top-earner on the VR platform would release something of such low quality. Buying this game only encourages bad practices in VR development and damages the future of the medium for everyone. GRIM VR has supposedly been in development for six years, but it feels like even sixteen more wouldn't bring it up to acceptable standards. Please avoid this game, no matter what price it's offered at. There are far better VR experiences out there deserving of your time and support.
I tried the tutorial twice in two different sessions in the Quest 2 and 3. I did not have the patience to get through it. Not my kind of game. I don't mind a little crafting in support of other gameplay mechanics but to start at such a basic level with nothing else to do... I have other things I'd rather be doing. Hitting trees with rocks isn't my idea of fun.
Its a mining simulator. You spend days grinding on nodes to loose everything to the midnight raiding zerg and start all over again every week because these clowns got rid of 2 week wipe cycles. If facing a node and swinging an imaginary harvesting tool at an imaginary tree or what ever gets you off then this is your game. If playing on a server with up to 4 other people who are all grinding on nodes 99% of the time is your thing then this is the game for you. Otherwise play anything else. Literally anything else.
