3/10 A TBS with a unique combat system, unplayable because of unreadable pixelated font, with bad gfx and sfx. Pros: - seems to be an interesting, unque combat system here So-so: - music quality varies. In tutorial it's average, 8-bit style. On the starting screen it's actually great. In the beginning of the story it's pretty bad Cons: - font is pixelated to a point where it's just hard to read. E.g. "M" and "W" look like an "H". "N" looks like a Greek/Russian "П", "Q" looks like an "R". This is because all letters use just a 3x5 grid of pixels. Not sure this limitation is needed if players have 1920x1080 monitors. It's not like the game would want to run on an early 1980s computer. So, either the letters need to be bigger or the pixels smaller. - tutorial is impossible to follow because of the font. It's hard even to say if the tutorial text itself is understandable. I just can't read the sentences fast enough and get distracted from the meaning by the need to decipher individual letters - the color palette of the game is just terrible. In fact, the sizes of pixels vary between images. There are some images where pixels are small and blurred. And some with just huge pixels with clean edges. Visually, the game is a mess

[th]I'm a Steam curator, you can follow me[/th]

A Card Game KING review
Gridlock is a well designed, byte sized deckbuilder where you can control one of 3 factions. The card aspect of Gridlock revolves around acquiring new cards and removing one card after each battle, allowing players to maintain a lean deck. However, the discard is not shuffled so you have to win each battle before your deck runs out (but you're likely to die before that). Cards that you play are units with special abilities, buffs or debuffs and there are simple combos that you can do but nothing super complex. One interesting mechanic is that your hand is not discarded so you can keep cards you want for later and only draw until your hand limit. The tactical, grid combat aspect of the game consists of battles fought on a very small grid with two rows, one for ranged and one for melee with the ability to move units around with energy used for playing cards. It's a simple, but elegant system that works. One thing to note is that units can attack the turn they are placed so you will take damage, but your hitpoints reset after each battle. All in all, solid and relatively quick tactical deckbuilder with some unique mechanics. There are, however, a few things I disliked. The biggest of them are the perks. After certain milestones, you will be offered a perk with a substantial bonus but with a big drawback as well. This are not optional and sometimes the benefits don't make up for the drawbacks. So instead of getting stronger you can actually get weaker, and it often felt like choosing the lesser evil, which should never be the case with upgrades. Second flaw of the game is that it does not do a good job of signaling what debuffs the unit has. You need to select a unit to see that info as there are no other visual cues. There were a lot of times I didn't move my melee unit that transformed into a ranged one, to the ranged row, simply because I have forgotten about it and there is nothing indicating that it changed. Other than that, the font is hard to read (but doesn't matter later) and the music is a bit to distracting but these are minor issues. There is one other mechanic in the game that, for a cost, allows you to see what the opponents plans to play for their next turn. Unfortunately what could have added a new layer of decision making, can be entirely ignored as the AI can still change their plan after you play some cards, making it a meaningless investment.
The positive
+ Solid tactical battles with micro-decisions on every turn. + Simple but engaging deckbuilding with 3 different factions.
The neutral
* Hard to read font and distracting music. * The animations could be quicker seeing as it's meant to be a quicker game.
The negative
- Upgrades come with drawbacks and often it feels like choosing a lesser evil instead of being an exciting moment.
Conclusion:
Gridlocke tries to distill grid-based combat and deckbuilders to its essentials and succeeds in creating a pocket version of both that are fun to play and can be played in short gaming sessions. Я щойно грав у цю гру і виграв її. Це було вражаюче. Планую виграти з кожною колодою! Гарна гра! 🔥🃏😃
I just played this game and beat it. it was fire. plan to get a win with every deck! Nice Game :)
Linear mission progression, with a take-card-lose-card deck building mechanic. The AI is simplistic, providing challenge by plopping down units with unique abilities bigger than yours, or becoming a bother if left alone. Worth a quick play, Grimlocke was over sooner than I would've liked. The story is a dry exposition dump text wall, otherwise it serves well to establish the premise.
Amazing game! Very nice gameplay, balance of both friendly and enemy cards. -Spirits are a tad overpowered do to their ability to be both ranged and mele units, I would like to see them more like merfolk is, but without the death ability where you have to decide which are they when you play them. -most of the perks tend to cancel one another with the exception of the red one's which put the game on it's head, like units no longer being able to rest, instead gaining power whenever they would rest. -Summons giving you souls to make spirits with feels very strong, rats end up being the S tier unit do to how expendable they are. -there is no way to look up what status effects on units do without having a card that explains them in their text, and not every card does that.
Really cool concept! deckbuilder + tactics give me more!! Awesome game!
A neat little deck builder that's perfect for anyone that wants an introduction into the genre.
pretty good micro tactics game mixed with deckbuilding.
I love the ambience and the retro feel of the game but as others mention: the font is unreadable and I couldn't get past that.
