Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Gospel of Abaddon is a top-down room-by-room shooter with some direct progression by upgrades that you can eventually get after playing for a couple of hours. The roguelite is a loose attached tag with some randomization of the individual level maps, as you attempt to run through all 5 levels each run while keeping up your health, ammo, and fuel. The goal is to go from screen to screen after destroying all of the enemies that show up, while staying alive yourself, or by surviving the countdown clock in the so called "deadly fights." Because of the aerial aspect of the combat, movement is something that takes a little bit of time to get used to, as you are flying an airplane so there's no instant reverse or turning, but instead circling around trying to avoid fire. The controls do take some time to get used to, and definitely feels rather awkward in the beginning, because of the movement and mouse-only controls. But overall after a while it feels pretty good after you get used to it. After acclimating to the controls, I had quite a bit of fun playing. Your ammo supply allows you to fire off regular shots and also bombs, which consume ammo rather rapidly, but allow you to destroy enemies faster. Caution on the bombs because you can also damage yourself if you are not careful. The biggest challenge most of the time for me came from avoiding crashes, because the enemies tend to be able to corner you and you are usually stuck on the screen until they are all cleared out. So there's no going around if you are stuck on the edge/corner of the screen. The crashing does pretty hefty damage to your plane, and fortunately after some upgrades, it was less noticeable and the game becomes more playable. The progression in this game comes from two aspects. One is the cumulative money that you can collect from run to run that add up, allowing you to purchase the three essential items as mentioned, and also some drugs with various boosts and deleterious effects, from the shop at the end of each level. The other is the level-by-level upgrade tree that is a permanent upgrade that lasts from run to run. The game has a level cap of 25 and after that you stop gaining experience and stop being able to get permanent upgrades, but you can still accumulate money and gobble up all of the health and ammo upgrades if you can afford after a few tries and some extra cash on hand. So far I have not yet made it past the 4th boss, and have yet to see the 5th and final level, but I have played enough to say that the experience went from initial frustrating, to gradually adjusting to the game and its mechanics, to finally actually enjoying the quick experience that the game offers. It's not perfect and the game could use some improvements, but what managed to get me to survive longer and do better in my gameplay was my own experience. (I wish it were only that, the cumulative money and permanent upgrades played a big role as well. XD) Nevertheless, for the price of a not-so-large and not-so-fancy coffee from your local corner breakfast place, you can add this little indie game to your collection and have a couple of hours of fun with it. It's not perfect and it's not for everyone, but neither is that coffee.
Controls
Mouse only, no keyboard controls at all, so good for people who want to play an action game but still hold that cup of coffee in the other hand, if it is actually coffee you are holding. the plane circles and moves around your mouse, while the left click shoots normal bullets and the right click fires off bombs. The scroll wheel and pressing cycles and uses your drug supply.
Graphics
Pretty basic, not bad, not great. There are clear-cut designs of the enemy planes so you know as soon as they come into view what they are going to try to do once you get used to them.
Music & Sounds
Music and sounds are pretty basic. The intro narrative is pretty ridiculous and funny too. The voice acting doesn't quite fit in with the pronunciation and accent, but it's an indie project basically made by one person, and at least they tried.
Audience
It's not for everyone, because it's got shooty action, lines from the Bible (I didn't confirm if these are actual or modified), and themed with using drugs. You will end up dying pretty quickly early on (unless you are just that talented) and it will take some getting used to in order to gain the skills to do better. (Or you died enough and gained enough experience and money along the way to bear claw your way through the enemies and bosses.)
Pricing
I like that there's a realistic price on the game, at base price of $2.99, it's easy to pick up for yourself and decide if you like it or not. There was a demo, but I don't think it's very reflective of the final game, and I don't know if it's still available.
Some Random Fully-Upgrade Gameplay Without Commentary
https://youtu.be/zAYiWG0c74s
Conclusion
Gospel of Abaddon is one of those games that grew on me after playing a while. I was pretty convinced that it isn't for me, until I gradually started to get the hang of it and had more fun. A lot of times, games proffer so much promise only to fall short, while this relatively non-descript game is actually worth a few hours of gameplay. And I know I still have room to improve and to try to make it to the end. Score: 7.5/10
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review.
IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: More Roguelite than Roguelike. Difficult, very challenging. Top-down, action shooter. Plain 2D maps. Basic visuals and sound. Rudimentary gameplay. Limited, unvaried content. Designed for replayability. God and drug references themes. Enjoyable in short bursts. Single-player only. ACHIEVEMENTS: VARIED. MOSTLY ORGANIC. SOME SKILL-BASED. STATUS: JUST RELEASED. WHO FOR/WHEN TO BUY: Only if you know what you are getting. I would wait for a good sale.
More info below....
THE LOWDOWN:
Gospel of Abaddon (GoA) is the second showing by the same indie developer. A top-down action shooter with a roguelite structure, an unorthodox design and uncomplicated gameplay. With minor drug and religious related themes. The action takes place during World War II. Players take on the role of a clergy member embedded with the US army. Who upon taking a powerful drug hears God's voice instructing them to destroy the 'entire sinful world.' The kite-high avenging angel promptly deserts and commandeers a single seater propeller-driven fighter, taking to the skies. After a 'brief briefing' the action begins. There are no distinct campaigns or missions. Levels are randomly generated. Games are played continuously as long as the player remains alive, they continue. It can be paused, progress saved automatically on exit. When a player dies a new map level is generated. Their level and any skills obtained are retained on the next run. Initial starting health, fuel and ammo are determined by skill upgrades. Levels are divided into self-contained grids which once entered can only be left when all enemies have been bested. Grid contents change every time a level is generated. Opponents in a grid location vary from a handful of fighters, to continuous waves over sixty seconds and a boss with hit-points. Once a level has spawned, the player is free to plot their course across the grid to reach the boss. Taking care to ensure fuel, ammo and health remain in abundance as they dispatch opponents. Once a boss is defeated a new level is generated. To assist in shooting down enemies a range of drugs can be taken to enhance the performance of the pilot. Experience points are earned for every kill. When enough are gained a skill upgrade can be chosen to augment the plane's capabilities. The player also earns cash as they progress. Allowing for the purchase of more drugs, ammo, fuel and damage repair in a store accessed between levels.
THE GOOD:
+ Simple uncomplicated gameplay. Easy to pick-up and play, yet very challenging to complete. + A robust rogue-lite design. Unorthodox 'mission' design produces a distinct experience. + Drug use results in an essential yet quirky buffing mechanic. + Forgiving design that rewards consistent, repeated playing of the game. + Games can be continued. So upgrades are not lost. Only progress is. + Excellent AI targeting. Maybe too good. + Polished on release. Well optimised due to its simple construction. No issues encountered.
THE BAD:
- Due to the limited space on screen, enemies can be on top of the player in the blink of an eye. - Initially hardcore gameplay. Its very easy to die. Designed to be easier by using drugs and the upgrades. - Without upgrades or drugs its all to easy to be one-shotted in a grid. - No save or checkpoint system between levels. When you die, the game resets. - Could have done with larger more varied levels/missions types. - Its possible for the plane to get stuck on the grid boundary leading to being pummelled by the enemy. - New level spawns can be unbalanced. Either walkover or surrounded by enemy wave grid locations. - Not enough enemy types. - GUI could do with a few tweaks, a level indicator and directional radar.
AND THE REST:
* Grid squares are too cramped. Likely a design choice. No doubt to increase difficulty. * Only five differently themed levels. Need more unique tilesets. * Basic visuals and audio. Though the sound-track is original. * Can level fighter up to twenty-five times in a run. * Uses bible quotes and drugs on info screens. Narrative prologue is skippable.
ANALYSIS:
GoA provided a mixed experience. Players expecting a top-down, scrolling action shooter will be disappointed as I initially was. Due to its design, gameplay felt overly difficult as a first time player. The aircraft appeared as flimsy as a paper plane in a rainstorm. Controls lacked precision. Weapons barely scratched enemies when hit. While levels emanated a lack of balance that favoured the enemy. As progress was made all of this turned out to be by design. One that emphasised its Roguelite nature. The resulting challenging gameplay was frustrating at times. To the point it may well put-off casual players from taking to the skies. However I came to the conclusion that all this was intended. A big part of the fun was to play through levels, taking on ridiculous amounts of enemy fighters and bombers. Way beyond the capabilities of the current aircraft. To earn the experience necessary to gain the next skill upgrade. Acquire the funds to purchase repairs, ammo and fuel to make the next excursion more rewarding. Obtain the drugs that could prove decisive when facing the next end of level boss. Content-wise the game appeared to be limited. By design a short game. Meant to be played until beaten. Then repeated again. GoA's core aspect was to replay its handful of very challenging levels over and over. To grind the experience, skills, fuel, ammo, health and drugs to defeat that extra grid. Defeat it and be in a position to challenge the end of boss enemy to progress to the next level. This fair except the lack of variety that ran through the grid types, levels and enemies. Any repeat play of the game would show the exact tile-sets in the exact same order and the same enemies to overcome. As well as additional tilesets and enemy models, a New Game+ feature could have made a big difference. It felt like it needed more depth to the obstacles to overcome. Some additional WW2 related aspects. A few fighter and bomber types. To change up the fun, add AAA guns into the mix. Make bosses a distinctly larger craft. With intermittent cloud cover another obstacle to overcome. Altering what was essentially the same game played over and over. Objective types could have been increased. Killing a number of parachutists from enemy transports. Strafing and destroying enemy installations or positions on the ground. While the backstory provided some historical context, the use of God in this video game felt unnecessary. The drugs less so. Afterall the drugs had a legitimate use in the game. The use of the Almighty had no corresponding mechanics other than just providing the motivation.
VERDICT:
GoA ended up being a game I liked playing but one that did not fully fulfil my hopes and expectations. It reminded me of retro games from bygone days that I enjoyed playing. While not being in the same class. My initial reservations gave way to an appreciation of its well-designed, robust roguelite nature, which despite its limitations was fun in short bursts. This may appeal to gamers on a budget. Who are not fussy about basic production values. Who feel at ease overcoming tough challenges. Dont mind being one-shotted even on the penultimate location and forced to restart from scratch. Especially if they enjoy short repeated playthroughs. Overall GoA was a fair game, with a fair price. If there was just a little more variation in the content and a New Game+ mode this would be a stronger recommendation. Rather than barely above neutral. Gospel of Abaddon is a Top-Down + Action + Roguelite (it has some Rogue-like characteristics too)+ Shooter, where you get stronger by buying perks after every death. And let's see now how it works...
The Progress
Fortunately enough, we are not alone in this fight!Every time we die,we collect XP (Experience Points),so we can level up and buy perks, that will make our life easier. The maximum we can level up,is level 25 and the good news is that it doesn't take much time to do this. The perks are permanent(that's why i talked about Rogue-Lite),which means that once we get them,we can use them in all our future runs.Apart from the perks,on our way, we might find some random items(health, ammo or fuel), and a vendor where we can buy items, too.
The Controls
The game uses mouse-only controls. On one hand this makes it simpler, especially for casual gamers, but on the other hand it can give some kind of confusion.Controlling at the same time the movement and the shooting, might result in lack of flexibility. There will be many times that you might die only because of that, especially in the beginning, until you get used to these controls.
Difficulty
The game is very challenging.I could have used the term "hard",but since it has a Randomly-Generated map system, lady "luck" plays a very important role in this, which means that you will sometimes get easier runs and sometimes way harder ones. But one thing is for sure,it will need some practise and you will die many times, until you beat it.
Geschmackloser Flugshooter

Follow Main group
Follow Second group ]
Weitere Rezensionen von mir
and discover more reviews from me

Full play through before fixes and release: https://youtu.be/3P1tUF6xzwE I think the game play in this game is pretty neat it's kinda like the old flash fighter pilot games with the steering and what not w/ roguelite upgrades(that help a TON) and the game is rather difficult especially before upgrades. Something it took me a while to figure out which helped a lot in the game was the fact if you swing your mouse fast enough you can shoot in directions your plane isn't facing this helps you avoid the suicidal pilots you're against. The story didn't really hit for me, but overall I enjoyed playing through the game in my opinion it would be worth the $2.99.
This Was Such a Fun Experience! It Was So Easy to Get Used to the Controls, and It Was Fun Going Through the Game, Different Drugs Gives You Different Effects and Many Ways to Beat the Game Either You Go for a Hard Clean Run or Become a Full-Time Addict and Make It Easy for Yourself! 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Gospel of Abaddon (Евангелие от Абаддона)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X99uwrNCBg4
