Why I even took the time to write a review for this game, along with thoughts that lingered longer than my actual playtime, despite the fact that I could have spent that time doing something else entirely, almost caused an inner conflict within me, well almost but not quite. Due to lack of time, obligations and projects, I recently chose not to submit reviews for games like Astroneer, The Forest or Control, even though I would have had plenty to say about each of them. In this case however, zooming in on it still felt justified, so let's have a look at whether the game is worth the three bucks or not.
Giving the game a thumbs up was not an easy decision, because there are many aspects that keep swinging between mediocre and outright poor, while nothing really stands out as genuinely good. It starts with the name, the spelling, the shop page description, the capsule artwork, and my honest first reaction to all of that was simply: meh.
The very first sentence in the description is: “This puzzle type puzzle game.” That is not a disaster of course, but I still do not understand why it is apparently so hard to write a halfway appealing line such as: “It’s a small music-themed puzzle game where you need to…” It just makes a difference.
While I often find it annoying when a product feels overproduced and hypes itself up as if nothing else exists, at the opposite end of the spectrum I cannot help but feel a bit pity for something like Good Puzzle: Music. It makes me wonder whether they simply could not be more creative, or did not want to be more knowledgeable or polished.
Are the images in the game actually beautiful? Well, not really. They are just some photos, apparently mixed with a few stock images, nothing special, merely functional. Is the soundtrack really as nice as the description claims? Counter question: what soundtrack? What I heard was basically just the thingy from the trailer, over and over and over again. And how easy are the puzzles? Well, waaaaaay too easy. Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely be down to pay good money for a well thought-out music puzzle game, but it would need more than just twelve images that can be solved in about 30 minutes and please go away with that fan at a concert making a heart sign with their hands stuff, give me artistically appealing pictures.
So once again in case you missed the verdict: only buy it during a sale, immediately ignore any DLC that offers wallpapers, play for about 30 minutes, grab the achievements and then head straight back to Stardew Valley or whatever else you are currently playing.

Today a guitarist came to my studio for a recording session. While I was making coffee and picking a suitable mic, I asked if he wanted to try one of my music games. He replied “Sure why not but please nothing too complicated.” And since I still had it installed, I suggested Good puzzle: Music. Ten minutes later as I was serving the coffee, he said: “I hope you didn’t pay much for this.” ... Of course I didn’t and whoever is reading this right now shouldn’t either. Wait for a sale when the price drops below a buck as mentioned earlier.
