Golden Tee Arcade Classics

Perfect for my ROG Ally at work. Not super involved if I don't need to be attentive and can wait as long as I wish between shots.

Most def, not the best golf games !! There were some great looking arcade games in the nineties !! So what happened here ? The graphics are just not good !!! I do not like the trackball mechanic. With other golf games without using a trackball, i get way better control of where to send the ball. What is nice -- including so many versions. Also, including two bonus games. Would have been nice if a dart game was also included. I would have liked to see a modern version of this title !!! This series needs to be updated !! I played it twice so far. I am not so good with modern golf games. Second time i played this -- on the leaderboard -- 12th out of 30 !! So the game was way easier than other golf games !! Also, Like another reviewer stated, this collection is bare bones compared with lots of other golf titles !! Digital Eclipse did not do their best work with these titles !!

Peter Jacobsen's Golden Tee 3D Golf is a game that has extreme nostalgia for me. I've been bummed for years that I've had no way to play it. This collection does exactly what I wanted and scratches that itch.

Very happy with this set of games. I do wish that it had a leaderboard or an online vs mode. It is a direct port of the arcade game and plays very nice on Linux. I am playing on my very old X-Arcade Tankstick with a trackball. It was plug-in and switch to trackball in game and it worked.

Great game. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old that love bowing! I set this up with the tank stick. To do so is easy. I have the slider switch on the second setting from the left when looking over the tank stick from the playing side. From there you need to go into the settings while in your selected game and controls all the way over to track ball. Should only have to do this once for each game title / player and you are good to go!

[h1]Great Steam Controller and Steam Deck game[/h1] Golden Tee hardly needs any introduction. If you were ever inside a bar, pool hall, or arcade in the late '90s through mid '00s, you saw some of these classic machines in action. Dedicated Golden Tee players will buy trackballs to play this game, but for everyone else, the touchpad on the Steam Controller and Steam Deck provide a great way to play the game with input more closely approximating the trackball experience than you'd get using a thumbstick or the virtual trackball. Be sure to set the input mode to Trackball in the settings.

I am writing this review as a Steam Deck user and a long-time fan of Golden Tee Golf series in the 90's and early 2000's. I am not reviewing the Golden Tee games themselves, but rather this emulated recreation of those games by Atari. First, I am very happy to see that somebody finally decided to re-release these barcade gems in modern times. They age well in terms of playability despite the 90's graphics. Moreover, I am very pleased with Atari's implementation using the overlays with the controls and the virtual trackball. I have played all of the early Golden Tee games via MAME (including MAME on Steam Deck). To be able to bring them together in one offering is very nice indeed. The ability to practice shot types is a welcome feature (I wish I had that during the barcade days!!). I do have an XARCADE tankstick, but have yet to try it with this recreation. Since I primarily play it on a Steam Deck, I have not had cause to break it out. I can say that the use of trackpad on the Deck works perfectly and I believe this is the best way to get more accurate shots (at least on a handheld device). It works seamlessly with the Steam Deck, though I noticed that it is yet to be verified (maybe that is because it just released a few weeks ago). Controls: Using the joysticks is workable and even fun, but I don't believe it offers as much control. This is particularly the case with those difficult chip shots, regular shots that are not full power, or slicing shots. With the Steam Deck, it works best setting the game for use with the "Trackball", which works directly off of the right trackpad. Golden Golf Games are relatively simple to learn how to play, but very difficult to master (making it a great combination). Graphics: These games games came out in the mid-1990's. The developers did a great job of providing options to simulate the old CRT including the scan line effect. Some have said that there were no enough options, but I'm not sure what else one might want. The options seemed more than adequate to me and really an added feature that was not even necessary in my opinion. I really liked the overlay options, which are particularly nice to remind me of how to make certain types of shots. Additionally, I liked the ability to change the appearance of the trackball. Very nice! Misc. Features: I had not tried out all of features of using controls such as aim assist (I want to play it as much as the original). The developers provided the ability for players to change some of settings or the games as the arcade operator would have had access to during the 1990's. (I suspect that they used a MAME core because you can do this in MAME). They added a game save feature for those moments when I suddenly put down my Deck (or computer) and I just happen to be having a near perfect game. They also added "Mulligan" feature, which I use for those times when I accidentally touch the controls and take a stroke unintentionally. I suppose it't also good if you have that one really bad shot that could spoil an otherwise near perfect game (but that really is cheating?!?). There is an option to turn off mulligans for hardcore players. It does, however, allow for when you just want to practice. Multiplayer: The only multiplayer that Golden Tee Classics offers is local multiplayer (as available on the original games). I had a blast playing with friends over a few beers back in the day. It would be nice to offer some kind of multiplayer between two different systems (such as crossplay or online). That might be a difficult ask considering the original games were designed at a time when this did not exist as it does today. I do believe that there were "Tournament" rom additions to each of these games that did allow for linking two more or more cabinets together, but I'm not sure how workable that is for online. What I think could be possible is having an online leaderboard challenges with scoring and maybe things like who has the most aces, longest drives, etc. I suppose those might be added depending on how well the game markets in it's current configuration. Value: Many have complained about the cost of this game being at around $30. That is about half of the cost of a contemporary modern game. I would agree somewhat saying it is a bit on the high side. That said, with the developers including all of the games (6 Golden Tee games) in one package (including a shuffleboard and bowling game from the era), I was willing to pony up the $30 for the game as it is a faithful and well executed package. Maybe, I'm also affected by nostalgia as I am in my mid-50's. If they would add a leaderboard or some kind of multiplayer, I could easily say that the $30 would be more than worth it. Back in the day, I probably spent way more than $30 in coins back in the 1990's, so I would say that if you want an addictive golfing game that is simple, yet difficult to master, I would highly recommend the Golden Tee Classics. BTW: I would be willing to pay for DLC that including some of the more modern Golden Tee Fore! games.
