A very awesome retro twin stick shooter to play when just bored out of your mind, very cheap as well. Would even be possible to get this when selling any game skin for 1€ and you have yourself one very fun game. Got this when it was still free.
Juego que revive infancia y con un gran potencial para le gente que le guste lo retro
its way too hard, should have upgrades, and easier mode
Golden Hornet is a donationware 2D retro pixel ripoff of Choplifter from the Commodore 64 in the early 1980'sm that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. Gameplay consists of lightweight arcade style shooting with upgrades (this is a feature that Choplifter lacked) and landing to rescue people on the ground and take them back to base (just like Choplifter). They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. The general level of quality is fairly poor here, while the controls are reasonably responsive, there's no mouse support and you're reduced to shooting (badly) in only 8 directions. The retro pixel "art" is particularly lazy and below the quality of even the lowly asset store packs most shovelware developers resort to using. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. Using a video game construction kit requires little to no talent or skill as a game developer. Very often, GameMaker Studio is used to make shovelware and lazy cash grabs, although in this case the game is mostly free, but the developers do still have their hand out for money in the form of a paid "Steam edition" of exactly the same game.

Golden Hornet, developed by Hijong Park and published by PsychoFlux Entertainment, is a retro-inspired twin-stick shooter that builds its identity around fast-paced action, tight controls, and a clear focus on arcade-style gameplay. Rather than attempting to modernize the genre with layered systems or narrative complexity, it leans into a straightforward design philosophy where players pilot a combat helicopter through enemy-filled environments, completing objectives and surviving increasingly demanding encounters. From the outset, the game establishes itself as a skill-driven experience that values precision and consistency over spectacle. The core gameplay revolves around dual-stick movement and shooting, allowing players to navigate freely while firing in any direction. This creates a fluid combat system that is easy to grasp but becomes increasingly challenging as enemy density rises. What adds depth to the formula is the dual focus on combat and rescue operations. Players are not only tasked with eliminating threats but also with safely retrieving hostages scattered throughout the levels. This introduces a constant tension between aggression and caution, as rushing in can lead to mistakes, while hesitating can result in missed opportunities or increased danger. The structure of the game is divided into mission-based progression, with a campaign mode that gradually ramps up difficulty through more complex enemy patterns and tighter level layouts. Early stages provide a manageable introduction to the mechanics, but later levels demand sharper reflexes and better situational awareness. Enemy placements become more punishing, and the margin for error narrows, requiring players to develop a more disciplined approach. In addition to the campaign, the inclusion of an arcade-style mode focused on endless play and score accumulation reinforces the game’s emphasis on replayability and performance improvement. One of the standout qualities of Golden Hornet is its pacing. The game is designed for quick, intense sessions where action begins almost immediately and rarely lets up. This makes it particularly effective for short bursts of play, as players can jump in, complete a mission, and feel a sense of accomplishment without committing to long sessions. The scoring system and leaderboard integration further enhance this loop, encouraging players to revisit levels and refine their performance in pursuit of higher rankings. Visually, the game adopts a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes clarity and readability. The environments are simple and functional, ensuring that enemies, projectiles, and objectives are always easy to identify. While this approach lacks the visual detail of more modern titles, it serves the gameplay well by keeping the focus on action and responsiveness. The sound design complements this simplicity, providing clear audio cues that support the player’s awareness without becoming a dominant feature. However, the game’s commitment to simplicity also highlights its limitations. The core mechanics remain largely unchanged throughout the experience, with progression relying primarily on increased difficulty rather than the introduction of new systems or gameplay variations. This can lead to a sense of repetition over time, particularly for players seeking evolving mechanics or a more diverse set of challenges. The absence of a narrative or deeper world-building further reinforces its focus on pure gameplay, which may not appeal to those looking for a more immersive experience. Despite these drawbacks, Golden Hornet succeeds in delivering a cohesive and focused arcade shooter that understands its strengths. It offers a satisfying gameplay loop built on precision, timing, and adaptability, providing moments of genuine engagement for players who enjoy refining their skills. Its accessibility makes it easy to pick up, while its increasing difficulty ensures that there is enough challenge to keep players invested. Ultimately, Golden Hornet is a well-executed example of retro-inspired design, offering a polished and enjoyable experience within a clearly defined scope. It may not push the boundaries of the genre, but it delivers a consistent and rewarding challenge that captures the essence of classic arcade shooters. For players who appreciate fast-paced, skill-based gameplay, it stands as a solid and dependable entry. Rating: 7/10
