A simplified and repetitive "Into The Breach"-clone with ugly voxel graphics. The "Hint"-system is frustrating by doing the rounds for you instead of being you know... hints. Not without it's charms but as a competitor to Into The Breach and as a newer Godzilla-game it is disappointing and I can't help but think Toho should have put their efforts into making a more worthwhile "real" Godzilla game. The concept of large Fungoid infecting both Kaiju and buildings are pretty cool though and I could see them revisit it in a future game with success.
Godzilla Voxel Wars is a fantastic puzzle game. If you've played Into The Breach you'll know what to expect from the gameplay (Enemies move, show you where they're going to attack, you move and try to stop eliminate/move/stop them with various abilities) in this turn-based tactics game but where it differs from Into The Breach is the fact it presents its levels as puzzles. Every level will be given a target number of moves it can be beaten in and you have to try and work out, using your knowledge of Godzilla and friends moves, how to beat each level without taking any damage. It may sound simple having only 2 or 3 turns to work out a route to victory but the combinations of allies, level and enemies soon build up and some levels can be very challenging. Every level you get a perfect score on though will give you a hint token and that can be used to reveal a third of a solution to a level - and up to three can be used on a level straight showing you the answer - meaning even the most seemingly impossible levels can be worked out with a hint or two. It's a simple premise but it's done exceptionally well, the complete lack of randomness in the level is a refreshing touch and there's a chess-like feel in the simple to learn, hard to master aspect of the game. The game also has a level editor - playing through the campaign unlocks more tiles to use in the editor and you can share your levels online. As far as I can tell any level in the campaign could be recreated in the level editor and it's interesting to see some of the levels people have built in this game so far and extends the life of the game far beyond the two beefy campaigns that are in the game already. If I had one complaint, that might put people off, it would be that I do find the game rather difficult at times - though this may have more to do with me than the game - but I can see the steep learning curve putting some people off, sometimes it can feel like you're trying all possible outcomes just to see what works. That being said I'm earning the hint tokens faster than I'm using them so if I'm ever getting to a point I'm getting too frustrated I can always use those. I think if you're at all interested in the game I'd recommend it. It's not going to be for everyone but I'm really enjoying jumping in every so often and beating a few more levels. I think the game has been criminally underlooked in general and should be a lot more popular than it is. Also it has Godzilla and there's not many games that wouldn't be improved with the addition of a Godzilla.
Really good puzzle game. Plays similar to Into the Breach but uses level based puzzles instead. Consistently adds new elements, enemies, and other Toho monsters to control which keeps it fresh. Does a good job of having the pieces reflect their respective monsters. Even has a level editor and community maps.
I’m an immense Godzilla fan, but despite that, I think I’d love this game even if it was reskinned entirely. This is a fun, clever and unique puzzle/strategy game that really goes above and beyond to embrace Godzilla and make Toho fans grin. It’s turn based on a grid, reminiscent of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, but the gameplay is much simpler at first and it plays more like a game of Chess crossed with a puzzle. Most levels can be completed multiple ways, but there’s a nice ranking system which will motivate you to perfect each outcome and collect rewards. I’m towards the end of Island 2 (of 5 I think) and the challenge is escalating. Godzilla, Mothra, Angurius and Mecha Godzilla have all made an entrance so far and I’m stoked to see who else erupts onto the board. Final note for those concerned with replay value - Aside from the Star system for perfecting levels, they’ve also included a separate set of “underside” levels, which function as more difficult variants. And there’s a Super Mario Builder style mode, enabling players to create their own levels, upload them and let everyone play. Genuinely, for the price of admission, this game is a blast. Godzilla or not.
I'm a big Godzilla fan and also happen to like puzzle games. This was a very well done game i enjoyed it a lot. I never tried building my own levels but you can post them and then be ranked on how well its doing with the community. There is a story that i really didn't pay attention to the characters and game play is what held my attention through the story mode. Levels can be very easy as well as very challenging. When things get tough you do collect hint tickets that can help you out as well if things are more of a wall to you, you can spend these tickets to show you how to beat each map. The downside to this being there's no negative to using them to solve it but it doesn't take from the game at all . You can't complete the game 100% with these tickets. all of my time playing this was all on my steam deck. (proton experimental) average battery drain, no control tweaks the game has game pad controls. touch screen and track pads work just fine as well.
Don't let the cutesy design fool you. This is a well crafted strategy/puzzle game with some really mind-wrenching levels. I've found the game as challenging as it was charming, and as a Godzilla fan, I was satisfied on all fronts. I'd suggest anyone to at least try this game out, especially for its low price.
Fun game with neat, voxel graphics that respects the Godzilla license. I do like the premise of a kid playing with toys, to explain the style, and the resource/collision mechanics. I would call it a strategy RPG. There is also some replay value in 3 starring levels like this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6_NrJUkamP4
While not a traditional Godzilla video game, it is still a fun puzzle game that uses Godzilla and many other classic TOHO kaiju.
