Gloom and Doom is a visual novel throwback to 90s slacker movies - complete with the solitude and sarcastic retorts - but with a supernatural twist. Push a powerful but unmotivated wraith to complete his stagnated quest to enter heaven, while trying to kill the suicidal but unkillable Doom Bringer.
Dude, this is so cutting!
I had so much fun playing this game. Well, that's not quite a surprise to me, seeing as I was already predisposed to like it as soon as I read the description: "90s outcast movies" quirky, but oh so human, supernatural characters, "a dark coming-of-age story" against the backdrop of looming apocalypse, comicbook style visuals...But beyond that initial hook of 90s nostalgia, loads of pop culture references and familiar tropes I found much more - a careful look at depression, loneliness and alienation, being stuck in a loop with no exit, themes of free will vs destiny, choices and responsibility, and a central heartwarming relationship between two unlikely protagonists. Gloom and Doom is the first visual novel of Neo Tegoel Games, a 'one-man band' developer who wrote, designed, coded it, made art. It's obvious when you play it how much care went into this, but most importantly, that translated into a very good visual novel. I won't even add "for a first-time creator." It's just very good. Period. Of course, your immediate enjoyment will depend on how well you respond to that initial hook I mentioned. As a lover of all things pop culture, this was like a catnip to me. It was fun catching all the references and recognising tropes. And there are a lot of them: from movies, music, games, TV shows, comics. I mean, the heroine is called Wynona like the queen of 90s cool. You will argue with a ghost about horror movies, not to mention about the merits of 2D vs 3D games. You will lament the slow dying of the music album format. The most fun I had was the movies and games trivia quiz hosted by the 'Goth Team Rocket'. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2371754934 Be prepared for a lot of familiar character tropes: a nerd and a cheerleader, dumb jock bullies, an outsider etc. Even angels and other supernatural characters are not exempt and have many human quirks. Archangel Michael is a dudebro jerk executive, Angel of Wisdom a cool skateboarder; there's an earnest and overzealous Angel of Justice, then Angel of Mercy, a perfect girl love interest for a brooding antihero. Lucia, a gender-bent Lucifer, is a cheerful female best buddy (with a touch of riot grrrl?) With a shortish blond hair, she reminds me of Lucifer from Vertigo comics, just infinitely more fun than the brooding male counterpart. The VN is aware of these tropes and often pokes fun at them in a bit of meta commentary (the role of the female LI e.g.) As can be seen, there're a lot of Western media influences which was to me, after all the exposure to Japanese VN tropes, refreshing to came back to. Besides the aforementioned film inspirations, it reminds me of some supernatural TV shows I used to watch. Also, as a big fan of Vertigo comics like Sandman and Lucifer, I was happy to encounter similar beats and story points. But even more, this supernatural story with quirky characters, lots of humour and going against Heaven and Hell gave me such Good Omens vibes at times. This is all very fun for sure, but it would ring hollow without the good writing that ties it all together. In fact, these references are sometimes used to make a point the story is trying to convey. And generally, the writing is just very engaging and fun. Exposition is handled well, flowing naturally from the dialogue, but always infused with humour and self-awareness. But most importantly, there's a lot of diving into characters' inner thoughts making them come alive and feel real. For all the supernatural shenanigans going on, this is essentially a character drama driven by conversations and relationship between two protagonists (think of Before Sunrise, noted as inspiration). Gloom is an ancient wraith who's spent 400 years trying to atone one 'bad' choice by killing lots of demons so that he can finally go back to Heaven. He's very good at killing, he kills everything, but doesn't like it. He's that brooding antihero archetype, rough around the edges, but with a heart of gold and a strong sense of justice. Wynona is a teenage girl, a loner all her life, suffering from depression, convinced she's the Doom Bringer who will bring hell on earth. She's equipped with a good dose of cynicism and teen angst almost embodying Generation X as seen in 90s movies. She's tried just about every way imaginable to kill herself, as an act of self-sacrifice, finally hoping that a killer ghost would be able to do it. But, alas, the killer ghost doesn't like to be used as a suicide tool even though this is the final kill that will get him to Heaven. We follow them separately at first, getting to know them and when they finally meet, it's an incredibly fun and meaningful encounter that jumpstarts their quest. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369455457 Their dynamic is the best part of the game with fun banter that reveals clashing of the old and new generation and develops slowly into a real heartwarming relationship that changes them both. They're very relatable characters, different on the surface, but actually very similar. Both feel lonely and alienated, unable to find their place, stuck in an endless cycle with no exit, making choices that don't really matter and struggling to take destiny into their own hands. The game often changes perspectives between the two and that is essential for revealing their inner voices and doubts. The most potent scenes are Gloom talking to furniture and projecting his own condition onto it and Wynona's obsession with windows that represent all the different lives she could've been born into, but hasn't. These are all some heavy themes this VN tackles. One the surface they're talked about casually with a healthy dose of black humour, especially depression and suicide ideation. But underneath all that, these issues are handled thoughtfully, with care and a lot of heart. There's a warning for this when you start the game and later the credits offer links to suicide prevention helplines. This is narrated by a side character you can save from jumping by lending a listening ear and earning the most satisfying achievement in the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2371412980 The themes of helplessness, having no control over circumstances and self-fulfilling prophecies are reflected in the game's choice system. Like I said, characters feel like they've been dealt "pointless choices that don't actually change anything." And that's exactly how I've felt at times while playing. There's a lot of choices ranging from those that don't have any influence on the ending you'll get (but are fun nonetheless) to obvious story choices. In between are those that look insignificant, but actually add up in the end. They reflect the point the story is trying to make: lots of small deeds make a difference; and even if your choices don't change the world, they change who you are. There are 7 endings in the game and despite the numerous choices, navigating them isn't confusing. I got the canonical ending on my first playthrough and that one is truly the most satisfying. It's of decent length with good, steady pacing that picks up towards the end with quite a bit of action made alive by some cool animations. Speaking of visuals, they are of refreshing 90s comicbook style not often found in VNs and a welcome change from the usual anime style. If you like supernatural stories, comics, pop culture, you're gonna love this. And even if you don't, underneath all that is a story that deals with universal issues everybody can relate to. 虚假的杀戮天使:Angels of Death 真正的杀戮天使:Gloom and Doom ↑以上是玩笑话(p.s. (Wynona: This is so cutting!!!),片尾做得尤其出彩。
Lucia
Gloom
Wynona
This is a story about the reunion between a powerful Angel of death atoning for his sins and a young girl with supernatural powers that might bring the doom upon the world in the nearby future…
TW: death, suicide, violence
Game's premise:
Gloom is a powerful wraith currently atoning for the sins committed 400 years ago where he used to carry the title of a prominent Angel. Due to prior affairs he lost the said title as well as his place in Heavens, which caused him to end up living on earth in a disturbing abandoned construction as an Angel of death. Determined to return to Heavens where his beloved wife Muriel resides, Gloom is compelled to conclude all the dirty work that Archangel Michael passes on him; which includes executing those that are said to bring evil, such as killing demons and malicious spirits. There also happen to take place lots of rumours among humans about this ominous spirit, taking the lives of those that meet him… and he is known to reside at that exact same building. After getting an assignment including taking a life of a very dangerous being – aka the Doom Bringer – that is supposed to destroy the whole world, Gloom happens to have a sudden visit… It appears to be a young girl claiming to be the Doom Bringer in person and she is asking you to take her life straightaway…?!
Characters:
Gloom is a hardworking wraith who does not happen to enjoy his “work” at all, knowing that Michael keeps passing on him all the work that no one happens to be willing to do. Often ending up to question himself if slaying demons mainly because of their title only, is actually the right thing to do. While being spurred on by the force of love towards his wife Muriel, Gloom spent 400 years slaying the evil, with no reward in his sight. The Doom Bringer presenting herself as Wynona is a young girl who spent way too much time trying out different suicide attempts. Not only she has to face the same nightmare over and over since she was a child, but she is also seeing it as a sort of prophecy stating her she is going to cause the end of the world if she won’t cease her existence. The problem here happens to be, that no matter how hard she tried, no matter how many broken bones and bruises her attempts caused, her body is quick at regenerating, not allowing her to put her soul to rest. And this is where after hearing the rumours about the powerful wraith residing nearby, that she decides to ask for his help. While this game offers such gloomy appearing characters and a horror setting taking place in a supernatural environment, the characters actually do happen to have a really warm side to them, such as for example the love Gloom feels towards his wife and Wynona’s will to help every tiniest animal in need that she happens to meet. While being surrounded by unfortunate circumstances and the surroundings either taking advantage of them or even bullying the innocent, the feeling you get from them is quite human and relatable.
Featurings:
This is a Visual Novel title with immersive horror atmosphere featuring supernatural characters, yet comic story and type of speech coming from characters. While the main setting of the protagonists may feel unjust at first, I reassure you that the game is quite fun, with really a lot of hilarious dialogues, puns and also a huge amount of references coming to important movie titles and videogames you wouldn’t expect to hear of in such a context. The art style is sure not for everyone, involving the typical traits of American comics, which also happened to capture my interest a lot, being a huge bonus to the atmosphere and the diversification from other Visual Novel titles. Lots of characters will be presented with unique design and entertaining personalities. While the language used in their dialogues is quite informal, with occasional presence of swear-words, the final result coming to personages is that they appear to be quite natural and expressing themselves casually among each other, while for example having important discussions such as the idea that the war between Angels and Demons, does not exactly equal the concept of Good VS Evil. The story is accompanied by surreal BGM that will take you directly into the world where different types of surreal creatures happen to dwell amongst humans. In this game you will find animated background scenery setting accompanied by sound effects such as for example the rain sounds. While proceeding with the story a screen with automatic character selection will appear, that after showing you which character does get picked, will display you the determined personage’s point of view in the story. This way you will be able to understand better their feelings and overall involvements. Being a Visual Novel, the game presents significant choices that will take you to determined endings. A slightly negative point to me personally was the huge amount of choices, which at first caused me a tad of confusion coming to how to achieve determined endings. What makes the gameplay more clear is that the story is divided in parts while proceeding with the playthrough. A total of 7 different endings will be present, nonetheless, I would’ve loved to have more details coming to Wynona’s whereabouts.
Overall:
While reading through the game’s notes, I realized that this is the first game realized by the developer, who stated clearly they didn’t know where to start at first. The overall result is really intriguing and also very inspiring to public willing to produce a work of theirs from scratch. This title is recommended to horror enthusiasts, as well as to public looking for a fun read to entertain themselves in order to take that typical deserved break from titles touching heavier topics that are difficult to process. As said, you will find a diverse vastity of characters that are really particular and amusing. Not recommended if you are looking for an eerie game featuring jump-scares et cetera. Found out about this game through a review about how this was made by a fellow singaporean during covid lockdown and felt that i needed to show some support. Got the game with little expectations as i was not a Visual Novel kinda guy. What left me pleasantly surprised was that the story had depth and was easy to follow, almost like watching a movie with educational moments every few steps along the way. Story was well thought out, engaging and the characters were well designed. The dialogues along the game often caught me by surprise. Overall a great and unique game to past time and get yourself immersed in a unique story. Just imagine a good book where you can determine your ending with your choices.
A coming-of-age story that can be read in one sitting: the dialogues are decent, the sprites are great, the plot is simple yet charming. Please, note, that this game tramples over the Christian mythology, which can be a dealbreaker for some. Other than that, the novel is fine.
Well that was great, i hope the story continues in some form. I got the ending i wanted so i am happy. The characters was great but all the pointless choices did drag the game down a bit for me as i want meaningful choices in the games i play. I would recommend anyone interested to buy this the story is pretty good tho the game is rather short.
The 90s called, they want their references back. They also said for those who got the references, your candles are gonna start costing more than your cake.
I will give this one a recommend since the story is a nice one, nothing revolution, it is a story of redemption and discovery. Funny antic, nice drawing and music. A lot of the old game and movie references. You wont find Shakespeare here, but the core story is solid. There is one big no for but since it is at the very end so i could just tune it out. Why pull the " I am the woman hear me roar here " and the bad guy, I am pretty sure trying to kill the innocent kid is more evil than being a sexist, etc.... . These things they are out of place and does not contributing anything to the story. So I would recommending buy it, just ignore a little weird ideology leaking in the game at the end.
I'm not really one for visual novels, but this game has really changed my mind. It was recommended by a friend, and found it amazing with the ton of pop culture references in the dialogue and backgrounds. Simply amazed that this was all done by one guy. It does have some deep themes, but is well paced with its sense of humour. Also loving the art style, its unique and refreshing from the typical anime style. The intro/tutorial has also got to be the most interesting/different (in a good way) that I've seen in a long time in any game. Definitely give this game a shot.
