GTA2-like that's a bit too overwrought for its own good. Got tedious to play real fast. It doesn't help that your character and the driving feel floaty and unresponsive so the moment to moment gameplay is rendered subpar. I can only recommend to those with a lot of patience for these type of games but we all know that's in short supply.
I don't understand why the hate against this game. Its a great GTA2 alternative, but its more than just a skin. The cars are indeed floaty, but that's because they are actually hovering. You can get used to it in 2 minutes. Just press SPACE to stop if you are sliding the wrong direction. BTW, it has never been easy to drive in GTA 1-2 either, and this is pretty much the same experience imo. The game is fun, but it's fun like we had in the 90s, so not the same experience as today's AAA games. If the missions are boring its because this game is much simpler than games nowadays, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It is top-down view, but its not sprite based like GTA1-2 was. It's 3D behind the curtains, with a nice HUD, shaders, reflections, shadows, transparent glowing pickup indicators, fire-smoke-particle effects, slight perspective tilt, proper handling when you go under something, everything that a 3D game engine can bring. It has tons of quality of life and overall game play depth additions compared to GTA2: - The districts look and feel different - You can set in options how much aim assist you want. Aiming has always been the painful part in GTA1-2. - The target indicator arrows with distance look nice and don't obstruct your view - You can hack people, gates, etc. It's fun to see the different pedestrians stats like: age, gender, occupation, place of residence, net worth, heart rate - You can buy weapons from vending machines on the street - You can buy augmentations from stores, so you have that cyberpunk addition - Lamp posts, fences are destructible - Your cars health, weapon, ammo, gang influence is shown on the HUD - Usable minimap and by hitting ESC it pauses the game and shows a fullscreen zoomable city map with all the points of interest that you can toggle if it feels cluttered, just like in GTA5 (no waypoints and GPS navigation though) Is it abandoned by the devs? I don't care... Games in the 90s were all abandoned after release unless there was a game breaking bug that had to be fixed. I actually like that they don't update the game and don't turn it into completely different game, or ruin it to make market for the sequel (like many big names do it nowadays). It's way overpriced for 20€, but on a 90% sale its worth 2€ if you like cyberpunk themed games.
Eh. The sense of nostalgia I get from this game is pretty awesome but I would not recommend it. I bought it, tried playing the intro mission, and found that the NPC gang leader that talks to you throughout the mission ends up babbling bits of dialogue from much further into the game, talks about things and situations I haven't even encountered. Naturally I thought this was a bug, so I tried to make a new save and starting the mission over. Same thing. I thought "ok maybe the dialogue is just weird and this is intentional?" No. I tried another mission from another gangleader and I encountered the same thing: a mixture of mission-related dialogue and then some buggy, SPOILER HEAVY DIALOGUE I was meant to read much further into the game. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Apparently none of the other, recent reviews have noticed this obvious flaw? I call ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The game seems serviceable, it has a big problem with terrain readability that was not present in GTA2 so that's not great, but it doesn't seem completely awful for two bucks. Yet if the very first few missions that are meant to introduce you into the game are busted then what can I expect from the rest of the game? Who are these people leaving positive reviews that miss this obvious problem? Don't bother.
Cyberpunk GTA 2. I could forgive the bugs and annoyances here and there, but I can't forgive one thing: the driving is bad. Like, really bad. Here's a list of everything that came to mind, I could be forgetting some things too: (I will preface this by saying I used a controller the entire time I played, and some of these issues may not happen on kb+m.... like the acceleration when you exit a vehicle or firing your gun inside the car and hitting your own car every time you enter and hold down the gas. but the other issues with driving and collisions definitely won't change) Cars don't seem to accelerate and brake properly, it doesn't feel great to drive. They don't handle properly at all in cornering. Just in general, they feel like they "stick" to roads too much. Their hitboxes are jank and frequently don't match the models. Collisions feel dreadful, you bounce weird. You also get stuck on little corners of nothing, or hills/elevation changes you can't see, fairly frequently. When you try to drive away from a wall while scraping against it, instead of steering you away from a wall, it almost always bounces and steers you INTO it so that your hood is against the wall and you can't drive (this is backwards, both for real-life physics and, you know, fun). Cars will randomly and quite drastically slow down on completely flat straightaways for no discernible reason. I've tested going back over the same flat road after and had no slowdown. No hills, nothing. Annoying. While driving, there's seems to be some auto-straightening effect with orienting to east/west/north/south, which makes precise driving, and driving offroad on non-straight roads incredibly annoying as well. This might be what causes the random mystery braking, who knows. When you exit a car, it massively accelerates, every single time, and if you are turning at the time, you're likely to run yourself over. When you have to pick someone up, they can kill themselves on your car even when you're barely moving, or even dying from touching your bumper in the front, when you're reversing the opposite way. Every time you get in a car, you fire your weapon and hit the car from inside the car, if you're pressing the gas to try and drive right away (on controller, anyway). A minor annoyance, but if they didn't even fix something THIS simple, it sort of speaks to their willingness to fix all of the glaring flaws with the driving. Yeah. It's been years and the physics never got fixed, and at this point, probably never will, unfortunately. Needs polish, obviously, and bug-fixing, but it probably could've been great. Other reviewers note the third city never loads and is unplayable, meaning there are only two sections to play, not 4 as the game leads you to believe. I didn't get that far, so I couldn't say for sure.
It looks like the game (actually) hasn't left the early access yet. Almost every component works not as expected: keyboard controls scheme is unintuitive, fps drops occur regularly (I have RTX 3070 laptop), campaign characters/employers talk a lot, but it is hard to catch what they need from you, it is really hard to understand if jump to the particular building/stairway is possible or not, the same for jumping down: only god knows — if it is going to hurt (or kill) you or not, lots of crookedly made mechanics — sometimes it is almost impossible to hijack the slowly moving car, cancel the police chase, accept the mission if gang already hates you (you need to reach to their terminal to pay the bounty), etc. Unplayable! Play old GTA 2 or Rustler (Grand Theft Horse) instead.
i reeally wanted for this to be good, but its badly optimized, the character art collides with the rest of the game, they are also badly written and NEVER stop talking with hundreds of text boxes. the 3d world looks great but it feels like its either mining bitcoin or every mesh has 9999 polygons... if you made the same game but without focusing so much on the stuff that no one cares about then itd be golden.
I'm very on the fence with this one. I've had it on my wishlist for a long time but seeing the bad reviews I've always postponed it. Now after it came out of early access I've decided to give it a try, and while the concept is fun, it isn't really polished, it feels like an alpha, with a ton of small but annoying things that should be fixed and that take the fun away. If steam had neutral reviews, that'd be one of them. I feel that it has more negative reviews than it deserves though, hence the positive. Pros: + the concept is interesting + the maps are nice + the plot might be interesting, although the way it's presented doesn't really allow focusing on it much Cons: - the interface is absolutely terrible, especially on controller. It feels like no developer even tried to play it with a controller. Using the menus or the map is a nightmare - the driving can be quite bad, especially on slopes or ramps, the car just randomly turns or bumps into things. Also, if a pedestrian jumps on the car (which happens way too often), the constant collision also makes it drive weird - the plot - whenever a message is shown, it scrolls pretty fast if it's longer than the container, and the game doesn't pause, so it's often hard to read it - the alternative camera mode would be fun but it's broken, it doesn't really follow the turns quick enough and feels like driving drunk - fall damage is pretty bad, it's impossible to tell if the fall is going to damage you or not because in a top to down perspective it always looks the same. Sometimes jumping in the same place can result in half of the hp bar gone - one safehouse isn't enough, constantly driving to the other side of the city when everyone attacks you on the way just to save really isn't fun - the achievements are quite uninspired, and to be honest could just not exist and it wouldn't make a difference - no cloud save
i paid $2 for this mess.. i feel ripped off.
It's GTA 2, but in a cyberpunk setting. and weird controls with a bit of jankness. Totally GOTY.
I came in expecting a spiritual successor to GTA 2, one of my favorite GTAs, and ended up quite dissappointed. I am a firm believer that if it weren't for the bad gameplay, GTA 2 would genuinely be one of the best games in the franchise. The radio ads, presentators, the soundtrack, the gangs, the dialogue, the voice-lines, the announcer, the aesthetic and so much more make GTA 2 the most unique GTA out there, and the reason it stands out over its (practically unplayable) predecessor is for one simple reason: it has aura. I would like to follow up this introduction by pointing out that Glitchpunk is everything GTA 2 is not: The soundtrack is forgettable, and might as well be replaced with ambient sounds altogether, the radio ads and presentators are likewise generic and, dare I say, lame, lacking any sort of charm (unlike the ones in GTA 2), the artstyle, both the character portraits and car/pedestrian designs, are incredibly ugly and unnappealing (contrary to the GTA 2 artstyle, which was ugly *and* appealing), the gangs are all generic cyberpunk rubbish you've probably seen a million times, hackers, evil corpos, yada yada, you know it all. No gang made up of lunatics that took over their asylum, or an army of scientist clones, or a russian mafia that orders you to kidnap people to turn them into hotdogs, that'd all be too original. Make sure your cyberpunk setting looks just like all the other ones made before it, that ought to sell well, right? Put simply: Glitchpunk does not have aura. To better illustrate my point, I will ask you to compare both games' evil corporation: The Zaibatsu and Megacorp (the latter being an obvious rip off of the former). The Zaibatsu all drive in Z-types with a big yellow Z on top, their leaders all have spanish names despite supposedly being japanese, and they deal in the business of selling experimental drugs. By all means they should be generic, and yet they manage to exude a form of aura that the latter Megacorp does not, despite both literally being called "evil corporation". It simply puts into perspective that good writing does not depend on a game's age. The gunplay may be more tolerable, yes, but that hardly makes up for everything else, and the missions the game offers are really too simple for the gameplay to be that enjoyable, even for 2D GTA standards. I don't recommend this game, I had high hopes, but I was thoroughly dissapointed with how much of a miss it was. GTA 2 is a very special game for me, and it's a crime that no modern developer has managed to make a good spiritual successor to it.
