GINSHA, developed by PolarityFlow and Adrian Zingg and published by PolarityFlow, is an indie metroidvania that sets out to do far more than most games in its category. On the surface, it presents a familiar structure—side-scrolling exploration, ability-based progression, and interconnected world design—but beneath that foundation lies a surprisingly dense mix of systems. It blends action-platforming with RPG elements, crafting, narrative choices, and even a morality system, creating an experience that feels both expansive and, at times, overextended. Movement and exploration form the backbone of the game. From early on, players gain access to a range of traversal abilities that make navigating the world fluid and satisfying. Double jumps, dashes, and aerial control allow for a sense of freedom that encourages experimentation, particularly when revisiting earlier areas with new abilities. The world itself is structured in a way that rewards curiosity, with hidden paths, upgrades, and optional content scattered throughout. Rather than guiding players through a strict path, the game often leaves direction open-ended, which can make discovery feel more organic but also occasionally disorienting. Combat introduces a notable twist on the genre by focusing on ranged, twin-stick shooting mechanics instead of traditional melee systems. Players can aim in multiple directions while moving, creating encounters that rely on positioning and quick reactions. This approach gives the game a faster, more dynamic feel, but it also contributes to a higher difficulty level. Enemies can be aggressive and overwhelming, and some encounters require precise execution to survive. While this can be rewarding for players who enjoy challenging combat, it can also feel unforgiving, especially when combined with the game’s other complex systems. One of the defining aspects of GINSHA is the sheer number of mechanics layered on top of its core gameplay. Crafting systems allow players to create and upgrade equipment, while different weapons and companion drones introduce additional ways to approach combat. There are also dialogue choices that influence the story, adding a level of narrative agency that is uncommon in the genre. These elements provide depth and customization, giving players the ability to shape their experience. However, they also make the game more difficult to fully grasp, as menus and systems are not always intuitive or clearly explained. Visually, the game adopts a pixel art style with a science fiction theme, creating environments that feel varied and atmospheric. Alien landscapes, technological structures, and environmental effects contribute to a sense of scale and immersion. While the overall presentation is appealing, it is not entirely consistent. Some animations lack fluidity, and certain elements feel less polished than others. Despite this, the art direction succeeds in establishing a distinct identity that supports the game’s tone. The narrative adds another layer to the experience, exploring themes of survival, identity, and the state of a dying world. The inclusion of player choices allows for multiple outcomes, giving the story a degree of flexibility. However, the execution can feel uneven, with dialogue-heavy sections that may slow the pacing. Without voice acting, these moments rely entirely on text, which can reduce their impact for some players. Still, the ambition behind the storytelling is clear, even if it doesn’t always fully deliver on its potential. Where GINSHA excels is in its sense of scale and possibility. It offers a world filled with systems to explore and mechanics to master, creating an experience that feels larger than many indie titles. At the same time, this ambition is also its greatest challenge. The combination of complex systems, high difficulty, and minimal guidance can make the game feel overwhelming, particularly for players who prefer a more streamlined experience. Ultimately, GINSHA is a game that prioritizes depth and freedom over simplicity. It provides a rich, challenging adventure for players willing to engage with its systems, offering moments of discovery and accomplishment that reflect its ambitious design. However, its lack of balance and clarity prevents it from reaching its full potential. In the end, it stands as a bold but imperfect entry in the metroidvania genre—one that offers a lot to explore, even if it doesn’t always bring its many ideas together seamlessly. Rating: 7/10
