NOTE: This game was given to me by the developer for review purposes. This did not influence my review in any way.
========================================================== ---------------------------------------OVERVIEW------------------------------------- ==========================================================
GiAnt is a first-person ant simulator from a new solo indie developer. You play Adam, an ant who is unfortunately miscategorised as a girl and given the job of a worker ant. The game starts with you attending a brief session at ant school before "The Captain" sends you out into the world to collect candy. Outside of the nest you need to avoid other insects and spiders while you explore and collect enough candy to be allowed back into the nest. Unfortunately I'm not sure what happens after that, as in over an hour of play I didn't manage to collect any more than two pieces of candy before the game crashed or I fell afoul of the aforementioned other insects and spiders.
========================================================== ----------------------------------------QUALITY------------------------------------- ==========================================================
Graphics - Graphics are a very mixed bag. Ant models are nice and have a bit of character, and the nest is sort of good in a cute way. Once you venture outside, though, you'll see the graphics really start to shine, with a great blurry effect put to fantastic effect on everything beyond a certain distance away. When you stop and look at it, it's really very impressive. Unfortunately, when you move there are some weird texture distortions and flickering, and shadows tend to flicker in and out in some areas as well. Couple that with some variable-quality close-up models and scenery, and a general lack of activity and feeling of emptiness in the game world, and after the first "Wow!" moment, I rapidly found myself much less impressed. The sprinkler, too, is terrible, and I still can't work out how a blowfly is hurting me! The cubist reflections in the kitchen cupboards are pretty weird as well (see the screenshot in my profile). The UI is mostly good, although the use of a default Unity UI font for the candy and lives counters looks very out of place. Loading screens, too, are pretty terrible: just a plain black background and two-tone grey bar in the middle of it that fills up as the next area loads. It's disappointing and quite jarring, taking away from the immersion of the game. Graphics options are fairly straightforward and offer a fair bit of choice for optimisation for lower-power systems. Sound - Sound is fairly minimal, but okay. The lack of any consistent background music or audible environmental sounds makes the world feel even more empty sometimes, but triggers for music and some world interactions kick off some interesting changes. The game includes voice for the ants. This is mostly well done, although the "Ow!" sounds get a bit painful to listen to over and over again. Similarly, the annoying high-pitched spider sounds and buzzing of the flies when they're near are too loud and grating. There are no sound options to adjust volume of music, environmental sounds, and voices, and the mix is a little off, making it impossible to get the right volume all the time. I missed a fair bit of the speech due to nearby insect sounds or a sudden musical trigger, and environmental sounds (except for other insects) would be good if they were a bit louder. These should all be separately adjustable for user preference. Gameplay - The game plays like any other first-person game: WASD for movement, space to jump, and mouse to look around. You're unable to attack or defend yourself, or even interact with the environment, though, so you'll not be needing mouse buttons any time soon. The aim of the game is to wander around collecting candy, which you locate on the minimap (sorry, "Antdar") in the bottom right. It's not always reliable, though, as the map is in 2D, whereas the candy can be above or below you as well. As you explore you'll encounter (overly) aggressive flying insects (that look like blowflies) and spiders, as well as other creatures on occasion as well. Other ants will talk to you, while environmental creatures will just ignore your passing. The game also includes powerups, but these aren't explained and they don't seem to do anything except to add some green misty stuff to the area directly around them for a short time. When I collected one once it seemed to scare a hostile insect away, but the next time it did no such thing and I was killed while walking into and out of the powerup trigger. Hostile spiders and insects are annoying and have extremely poor AI: they just make a bee line (haha) for you all the time and keep following around until they've killed you. There's no way to fight them off or escape, especially since the powerups seem to do nothing the majority of the time. To make matters worse, the game plays like a typical gravity-based FPS, completely ignoring the fact that you're an ant and should be able to climb pretty much anything. The best example of this is probably the candy that's 'hidden' at the top of the tree under which your nest is located. Rather than just running up the tree, you have to find a weird walkway that seems to be made of timber boards running up and around the tree like a corkscrew, but even that is on an angle and you'll find yourself getting stuck between it and the tree as your ant insists on staying perfectly horizontal. It's a real shame and is probably the biggest problem with the game, as it completely ruins the suspension of disbelief. It's very easy to become stuck on the terrain, and there are some crazy clipping issues as well, making it possible for you to walk through some stones and then become stuck between them and other terrain. Finally, there are a number of little niggling problems: - poor writing in the small amount of text that's included (the wrong 'their', 'occational') - the game often crashes if you minimise it while playing - there are no visual damage indicators when you're being attacked, so if you've turned down the annoying sound when insects are chasing you, you'll often be killed before you realise it - sometimes the game doesn't realise when you've died, so you have to quit to the main menu and restart to try again - the ant bridge mentioned as a cool feature is really just a static part of the map (see my screenshot), rather than a cool dynamic feature of ants helping you - the Steam page says it has achievements, but it doesn't seem to (at least not yet)
========================================================== -------------------------------------PROS & CONS------------------------------------ ==========================================================
Pros: + very impressive 'long range' graphical effects (esp. outside) + creative use of size differences + mostly entertaining voices + an interesting idea, by a solo developer Cons (see above for more): - you're an ant, but you're stuck on the ground and can't climb anything - poor enemy AI that just doesn't give up - a lot of terrain and graphics problems - some annoying sounds and no volume options - a very empty-feeling world that's just not much fun to explore
========================================================== --------------------------------------CONCLUSION----------------------------------- ==========================================================
I'm sad that I can't bring myself to recommend GiAnt. I wanted to love it, and for the first few minutes I did. But after that all of the game's faults started to appear, and there are many. With a little bit of work, GiAnt could be a great game, and if it were in Early Access I would probably recommend it. But it's now been released and it shouldn't have been; it's unfinished and it needs a fair bit of work to reach its potential.

First review I'm writing because this game got on my nerves. I paid 9$ for this, and it's just not good. The idea is funny, and I get that it's a SUPER indie game, but man... Don't put yourself through this. Game crashed several times, couldn't even run it on windowed, PLUS I couldn't climb the pipe you're supposed to climb to enter the house and go on the ant bridge. I kept sprinting, but it just wouldn't make it. Can I do better? Hell no, but would I try to do anything like this and SELL IT? HELL NO. I would give it out for free, since there are WAY better games to spend 9$ on. Really disappointed with my purchase. In the future, try to make a game that's actually worth the money you're asking. Cheers.
Playing as an ant would be an interesting concept but this game does nothing with it. I collected all the eggs on the first 3 levels multiple times. It would either randomly not give me credit for one (I counted) or the counter would break. After the 5th time it finally counted to 100 and didn't unlock the achievement even tho it unlocked the gun. The gun was also broken for me and wouldn't do anything unless I was in melee range making it useless. The game also frequently crashes and I would clip into the environment making me stuck so I would just die. Don't buy it, it's terrible.
GiAnt is a very messy and boring game, that obviously tries to be silly, but just ends up not being very fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNUocPZXXxQ I liked the idea of playing as an Ant, and so I picked this up without looking too much into it. After playing the game for about 10 seconds it was evident what bad quality I was getting. This is the experience you'll have in the first minute playing the game: The first level starts you off in a garden. You spawn under some grass, and there are signs next to you with awful colored text that is just annoying to read. There's also a big transparent green cube with a handgun in it. That's right, a pistol. A pop up will appear telling you that you can equip your matchstick with C to fight off enemies. Why can we not just fight with our pincers? Ok whatever, the game is just trying to be funny, it's fine. Suddenly you hear a high pitched squealing sound. A badly textured spider will come charging towards you unwarranted, and you try to flail your matchstick at it. The enemies in this game are very hard, so it could very possibly kill you right there. Or you might hit it about 20 times and it'll finally die. As you explore the world you will find a lot of nothingness. Sprinting between big landmarks looking for something interesting to do. You will gather dozens of enemies chasing you at once, because you can't be bothered to fight them as they are hard, and the combat system only consists of mashing the left mouse button and hoping they die soon. So you just outrun them (Very easily) and move on. The objective of the game is to collect all 100 eggs within a level, which will then unlock the gun that is available in that cube that I mentioned. There's one gun per level. Although I fail to see the point in really using them, as by the time you'll unlock them, you'll be done with that level as you've spent ages running around a boring wasteland collecting stuff. Oh, you can also skip all of that and just buy these guns as DLC on the store page. Yea. Things are badly animated, or not animated at all. Enemies make so much annoying noise, the voice acting is bad, and so very quiet. There are no subtitles to help with that. You can buy the soundtrack as DLC although I didn't notice any music in the first two levels that I played, so I'm not sure what exactly that could include. I quit at some point during the first level, and then went to the main menu and clicked continue, and got dropped into the second level even though I hadn't unlocked it yet. Most importantly, the gameplay is not fun. Everything feels stiff, unfair, and uninspired. I don't like saying this, because I do think that the developer tried to make a funny little game, and just failed. That being said, there's a lot of stuff that is unpolished and comes off lazy, so I can't help but feeling anger ontop of that pity for having the nerve to sell this for money. The exploration, secrets and collectibles are not fun to discover. You can't really understand the story or dialogue even if you tried because of the quality. The combat is lacking so much, the enemies are so hard and not fun to kill. I feel bad saying that there's unfortunately, nothing redeeming about this. I hope this review was helpful!
Was really reluctant to buy this game, especially after some previous bad reviews. I saw that it had had a huge update since the reviews (and that it was in the summer sale for a bargain) so gave it go.... + I came out of the nest into some overgrown grass + Out of the grass and was almost squashed by a human foot + After recovering from almost having a heart attack I realised I was being chased by a terrifying spider + Killed the spider with my flaming matchstick of death + Grabbed a Speed Boost and got to my first candy collectable + Turned around to see 3 thug-life looking flies about to rip me apart + Just as they were about to rip me apart, they saw a spider and started chasing him instead =) winning + Helped the flies destroy the spider with my Matchstick... Realised that they could now concentrate on me. RAN! I love this game, you never know what's going to happen next, it's seriously so much fun. Fast paced, full on, Going to play the Warfare DLC now, so I can kill those damn with a bit more fire power =)

Played this with my friend and had an absolute blast playing it. now with the update and the DLC its even better. Would recommend to anyone.
The game's premise is great. You get to be an ANT. a GiAnt. The sound effects are cool and each insect in the game has a different audio cue. AND...that's where the positive things end. The frame rate is terrible even on low settings. The combat is unbalanced and unfun. The AI is terrible and running away from guys just creates a line of enemies behind you. I played for 15 minutes but there is so much that this game needs to be good that I just cant reccomend it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqv6iu7o-CM
