Ow man, this could have been great. The world building and the narrative aspect are the best thing I've ever seen in an action platformer game. That's where the compliments stop. The controls are very difficult, especially on keyboard. The game itself is kinda difficult. literally too difficult in some places. The "polterscope" effect makes the framerate crawl to a halt, which is unfortunate because it turns one extremely difficult platform jumping session into an almost impossible challenge (the pit of despair). I don't know if this area is necessary to finish the game, partly because of the endless maze of platforms in just the firs level (after the prologue) and that was enough to discourage me from continuing. I can't be arsed to keep looking for that potentially hidden passage that would enable me to continue, which could be anywhere in the thousands of screens that the first level had to offer. I don't feel like endlessly backrtacking through that maze to find the one door that my brass key will open. The save is arbitrarily locked to save points, which doesn't make sense, and it made me lose a couple important items that I don't feel like going back to collect. The level/map design is as pointlessmy complex as in old computer games from the 80s. A real shame because no platformer before had ever managed to hook me with the story. Ghostly Matter is a flawed, but pretty good metroidvania game. So what’s the story about. It’s a dark night as the world renowned psychologist and neuropsychologist professor Emeluis Penderghast is working late in the night with his assistant Amanda both of them working on the EVP Electronic Voice Phenomena. But as they test the device a strange voice begging for help comes out, a voice that Emeluis knows as his old friend and colleague doctor Walter Melvil, a man he had not seen or talked to in ten years due to a big fight they had. But despite that Emeluis goes to help his old friend, but he will soon be put face to face with the dead and true evil. All right what’s to like about the game. Well I like how it’s a metroidvania game meets ghostbusters that was a fun idea and reference/Easter egg. And it’s not the only reference/Easter egg, though out the game there are little references/Easter eggs to other works of horror like the evil dead. The enemies though out the game where creepy looking my fav being the mad doctors, mostly because of the death animation they have, and the bosses in the game where all so creepy looking and fun/hard to fight. The weapons and power ups were fun to use and helped with some of the more hard bosses. And lastly the story was good and had some nice moments. There are all so notes in the game watch is all good to help with the story andd the world. Now let’s talk about the bad of the game. Well to start the map sucked, you see in most metroidvania games you can look at it full size, but in this game you can’t, you can look at it in your inventory but it’s small and you can’t make it big. Then we have enemy placements what I mean by that is that some enemies are placed where you can’t hit them or dodge them, you have to get hurt and then you can hit them. There are all so some bugs in the game, like when I was fighting the tentacle boss when I hit one of its tentacles it would not fall it would stay up there, at first I thought it was a part of its attack till the whole well became filled with tentacles and I could not see where I was going. But after dying the bug did not come back. Then we have the sound effects, there are two that are bad, the fire balls in the temple and that scream from the ghost woman both can be very annoying and some of the platforming can be a pain in the ass. And finally there is how you save the game, like in the game After Death you have to walk into something to save, at first it was easy, but what makes it a pain in the ass is that you save before fighting the final boss witch can be a pain if you don’t have enough healing items, or when you’re fighting the boss and did not unlock all the achievements. Anyway Ghostly Matter is a flawed, but pretty good metroidvania game, with the good story, hard bosses and nice references/Easter eggs. So if you’re looking for a good metroidvania game this one is pretty good.
Such a weird game (in a good way!) you expect a metroidvania, but start as an adventure, continue as a metroidvania but then turn slowly in a shooter without leaving the other genres. Story is A+ rich of dialogues and some plot twist, Graphic is for the most part outstanding. Some flaws: dialogues may be too long, map isn't good as you expect from a metroidvania but serves the scope, it's very hard! both in terms of gaming skills and logic (but for someone can be a plus). The items item spawning is solved after the patch, so now you don't have the inventory full of unnecessary stuff. Absolutely recommended
The game suffered from a very very long and drawn out tutorial that had very little of the gameplay seen in the trailers. The jump controls were a bit clunky as well.
Vale muito, ainda mais quando está em oferta! Pura nostalgia, gosto muito! Gameplay: https://youtu.be/VDifQGaQDyU
You're gonna hate it at first, especially due to the key configuration that is not comfortable and, what's worse, cannot be customize. But if you somehow manage to get used to it, you will have a wonderful metroidvania that will keep your attention and curiosity on a high level. Plus I loved the old style graphic and the countless references to horror classics. Ghostly Matter has its faults but at the end of the day it's worth more than one try.
Voto 8/10
It's really a great game, a shooter-metroidvania with elements of an old-fashioned graphic adventure and an intriguing story. It's hard enough to create a good challenge. Recommended for metroidvania fans like me!
