About
Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.
You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.
If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.
The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.
We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.
Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

When I first launched up Garry's Mod, I figured I’d play it for about 5 minutes, check out what it had to offer and then move onto something else, but that could not have been further from the truth, as within the blink of an eye, Garry’s Mod had grabbed a hold of me, becoming hands down one of the greatest games that I’ve ever played. Even from the main menu screen, I had a feeling that this was going to be something great, but who knew I was in for something this magical. There’s not many games that manage to convince you, within a space of minutes, that absolutely anything is possible but Gary’s Mod does just that, and much more. It’s a game that won’t hold your hand, won’t dictate how to play or where to go, instead it’ll just dump you in a giant toolbox with a physics engine and an empty sandbox and tell you, “Go have fun”. That simplicity is where the timeless, everlasting fun of Garry’s Mod lies. Compared to many modern-day games where after you have completed the story and all of the achievements, you will soon find your experience of the game begins to die, Gary’s Mod’s experience can’t be defined as a “game” with a story mode, the game simply doesn’t end. Each and every time I boot it up, there’s always something new I feel I have to try out, build, visit, test, join in with, and there is certainly no possibility that I’m going to exhaust the game in the foreseeable future as it feels infinite. Without doubt the greatest feature (or the heart and soul of the game if you will) is the Steam Workshop, and it cannot be said enough just how incredible the Workshop is for Garry’s Mod. In just a few clicks, you have access to hundreds of thousands of player-made mods and models, essentially turning the game into what you ever could dream. Fancy some realistic weapons? No problem. Futuristic technologies? It’s here. Need a horror map to shriek through? We got that too. What about some military vehicles, anime characters, dinosaurs, improved graphics, joke models or even some fully original gamemodes? Chances are someone, somewhere on the Garry’s Mod Workshop has it and is more than happy to share it with you. The sheer amount of creativity that comes from the Garry’s Mod community is insane, I can guarantee that even if you browse the Workshop for just 5 minutes, you will end up downloading about 10 more addons than you intended as they are all so unique and exciting. For instance, you’ll tell yourself that you’ll only download 1 more map to complement a build, and an hour later, you’ll be download an additional fifty addons that fundamentally changes the way the game operates. It’s these little and larger moments that encourage the community to explore their creativity and think outside the box. Also contributing to the game’s everlasting fun is its magnificent physics engine. All it takes is spawning in a few props, and you’ll have yourself an hour long building mission to create the most complex car, building, robot, flying device, or just a truly insane and ridiculous contraption that will spectacularly explode the second you activate it. Although, frankly, these spectacular failures are even funnier than if they had been successful. The look of disbelief on my face when my contraption blasts into orbit thanks to a backfiring thruster will never cease to amuse me and these instances give the game life and character. If you think Garry’s Mod is good on its own, just wait until you play it with friends. The laughs that I have had while playing Garry’s Mod with friends will live with me forever. From meticulously attempting to build an impressive base, to someone randomly spawning an army of zombies, detonating half the map in a huge explosion or even just sending everyone’s creations careening through the atmosphere in one glorious physics explosion, this game somehow turns absolute chaos into some of the funniest experiences I have ever had. Another thing that draws me back to Garry's Mod year after year is the incredible diversity of multiplayer servers. No matter what you're in the mood for, there's almost always a community that's built an entire game around that specific concept. Some days I'll spend hours in a roleplay server where everyone commits to their characters and creates funny, compelling stories together. Other days I'll jump into Prop Hunt, Trouble in Terrorist Town, Murder, Deathrun, or countless other user-made game modes that have become legends within the Garry's Mod community. It's honestly insane to me that a single game can hold so many different types of experiences. It really feels like playing hundreds of games at once since every server offers a completely different style of play. The roleplay communities are a whole separate beast, and the way people build them out really showcases the flexibility of Garry's Mod. We're talking about entire cities, with functioning jobs, economies, police departments, emergency services, businesses and full communities where players are weaving new stories everyday. Some people spend hours constructing restaurants and taking on chef roles, others will go be mechanics, doctors, police, firefighters, or the mayor and manager the whole server! There's something inspiring about how dedicated these players are to making the world come to life, and it proves it's not just a sandbox – it's a creation engine. Of course, not every session needs to be a serious one. Some of my favorite moments in Garry's Mod happen when I just load into a random map with absolutely no goal in mind. It all hinges on what crazy, spontaneous ideas I come up with on the fly: "Let me see if I can build an impossibly tall tower with only random chairs." Or, "Let me fill the entire map with balloons until the sky is completely blocked out." Or, "Let's put 200 npcs against 200 more npcs and watch it go down." It's hilarious because no matter what absurd thing you decide to do, it somehow ends up working in a completely unpredictable way. One feature that everyone needs to appreciate more is the Tool Gun. On the surface it's a simple utility item that you can grab when you spawn, but after enough time, it becomes incredibly powerful and flexible. Players can use it to weld anything to anything, add wheels, ropes, thrusters, lights, buttons, hydraulics and hundreds of other components. It’s only limited by the user's imagination, and we see people building everything from tanks, airplanes, functional computers, rollercoasters, entire cities, musical instruments, automated factories and even games inside Garry’s Mod itself. I think I reach the limits of what people are able to do, but somehow a week later someone’s uploaded something even more insane. The game’s sheer longevity is frankly amazing. Many games fall by the wayside after a year or two, but Garry’s Mod keeps pulling players in by evolving with its community. There are hundreds of new addons created every day on the Steam Workshop that introduce new models, improved game mechanics, whole new types of gameplay and fresh challenges to the game. After thousands of hours logged into the game, there's still always a new map to download, another game mode to play or another creative script to explore. It never feels old. The game also happens to be incredibly approachable. If you just want to fool around with your friends for a few minutes after a long day at work or a week of crunch at the office, or if you're the type of person that enjoys spending weeks building complex engineering masterpieces, Garry's Mod has room for both play styles. There is truly no wrong way to play the game, and that is something most games don't achieve. The freedom is almost unparalleled, allowing players to try anything they can think of, experiment without penalty, and enjoy some of the funniest and most memorable moments that video games have to offer.
