Ganryu 2 is a retro-inspired action platformer developed by Storybird Studio and published by Maximum Entertainment together with PixelHeart. The game serves as a modern continuation of the 1999 Neo-Geo title Ganryu, drawing heavily from the mythology and historical legend surrounding the famous samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Rather than presenting a historically grounded narrative, the game takes a more fantastical interpretation of Musashi’s rivalry with Sasaki Kojirō, building its story around supernatural revenge and heroic adventure. The premise revolves around Musashi’s journey across feudal Japan to confront the resurrected spirit of his rival, creating a story that functions mainly as a thematic backdrop for the intense action and platforming challenges that drive the gameplay. The narrative begins after Musashi’s legendary duel with Kojirō. Having defeated his rival, Musashi attempts to leave the life of constant battle behind and retreats north to pursue a more peaceful existence. However, tranquility does not last long. A mysterious voice eventually calls him back into conflict, revealing that Kojirō’s spirit has returned with vengeance in mind. The threat posed by this supernatural resurrection forces Musashi to once again take up his weapons and travel across Japan toward the island of Ganryu-jima. The story unfolds primarily through brief scenes and atmospheric storytelling, emphasizing the legendary rivalry between the two warriors rather than complex plot development. Gameplay in Ganryu 2 follows the traditions of classic side-scrolling action platformers. Players control Musashi as he travels through a series of levels filled with enemies, environmental hazards, and platforming challenges. Combat focuses on Musashi’s sword attacks, which serve as the primary method of defeating enemies encountered along the journey. In addition to his sword, Musashi can also throw kunai to strike enemies from a distance, offering a limited ranged option that becomes useful in certain situations. Movement abilities such as double jumps, wall jumps, and dashing give players the mobility needed to navigate difficult sections of each stage and avoid traps. The game’s design strongly embraces the structure of old-school arcade titles. Levels are filled with enemies that appear in carefully designed patterns, and traps are placed in ways that often require players to learn their timing through repeated attempts. Boss battles appear at the end of major stages and serve as skill tests where players must observe attack patterns and find the right moments to strike. Because the game intentionally mirrors the style of classic 1990s action platformers, it can feel quite unforgiving. Limited lives and relatively sparse checkpoints mean that mistakes can send players back to earlier sections, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on patience and skill. One of the most striking aspects of Ganryu 2 is its visual presentation. The game uses detailed pixel art that evokes the look and feel of classic arcade games while still incorporating modern animation techniques. Each level represents a different environment within feudal Japan, and the seasonal changes between areas help create visual variety throughout the adventure. Players travel through blooming spring landscapes, vibrant summer regions, fiery autumn settings, and snowy winter environments. These changing backdrops add personality to the journey and help maintain visual interest across the game’s stages. Character design and enemy animations also contribute to the retro aesthetic. Musashi himself is portrayed as a determined warrior moving fluidly across the screen, while enemies range from ninjas and bandits to supernatural creatures that reinforce the game’s mythological tone. The visual style pays homage to classic ninja action games from earlier gaming eras, creating a sense of nostalgia for players familiar with arcade platformers from the late twentieth century. While the game’s visual direction is one of its strongest elements, the mechanics occasionally reveal some rough edges. Movement can sometimes feel stiff or slightly imprecise, particularly when performing wall jumps or navigating tight platforming sections. In a game that demands precise timing, even small control inconsistencies can lead to frustrating moments. Additionally, the high difficulty level may feel overwhelming to players who are more accustomed to modern platformers with forgiving checkpoints and adjustable difficulty options. Despite these issues, Ganryu 2 offers moments of genuine excitement when its gameplay systems align. Successfully clearing a difficult section after several attempts or finally defeating a challenging boss can feel rewarding in the way that classic arcade games often did. The combination of fast combat, platforming challenges, and retro presentation creates an experience that is both nostalgic and demanding. Ultimately, Ganryu 2 is a love letter to classic action platformers. Its pixel-art visuals, challenging gameplay, and mythological samurai narrative all contribute to an experience that deliberately echoes the spirit of older arcade titles. While the game may struggle with occasional mechanical stiffness and punishing difficulty spikes, it still delivers a satisfying adventure for players who enjoy retro-inspired challenges and old-school game design. Rating: 7/10
Yes, I would like to recommend Ganryu 2 for everybody.
5/10 didnt really enjoy this
YEEEAH!!
The game is awesome, similar to "Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master", but its only drawback is that it is short
There are a lot of bugs in the game, the developer apparently forgot about its existence, the most empty and uninteresting product.
