*Inhales*. *Exhales*. Again. And again. And... No. I wasn't that mad. I wasn't mad at all actually. Let's have a calm and collected conversation, shall we? Good points: Artwork is very nice. Backgrounds/scenes are pleasant to look at. I believe I laughed more than once. The game doesn't suffer from broken language, even though it does use some strange words at times. Rarely. Now usually with games that are aimed for a different age group, such as here: for teenagers, I would go on and say "yeah, if you are in HS, you might enjoy this". I wont this time. Because I am not even sure WHO would enjoy this. The BIGGEST and freaking ginormous problem this game suffers from is... THE MAIN CHARACTER! I've seen terrible personalities... But this... I think this actually beats them all. The MC (Alice) is an unbearable beep, who thinks the world revolves around her. She is highly judgmental and if anything goes wrong? She swears at it/people constantly (mostly in her head) and WHINES that she is just a pitiful freaking victim in all of this. That coupled with her intense self-loathing? Works wonders for her character! Example: Her best friend went through a sort of a tragic event. MC also became a beep to her... So her friend became somewhat distant and had trouble in one of the volleyball games. What did the MC do? Told her that she is dead to her. Called her some nice words too. Now, now... I know that something impeded the MC from what she really wanted to do... But who gave her the right to be a horrendous beep and judge everyone else? Had she ever been in their shoes? Actually TALKED TO THEM? KNOWS HOW their lives are like?! NO!!! This entitled beep only cares about herself and her own pitiful "I AM SO FAT... I AM SO FLAT..." existence. Mark, a guy who tries to point this out, gets berated up the ass. He retreats, only for the group of girls, whom he rightfully didn't agree with, to say the following "best men are women". Only because these terrible heathens were gossiping like idiots about a girl they knew nothing about. Now HE is the worst kind of sheet for standing up to them? HELLO?! Oh I am sorry! Am I being too judgmental? Well welcome to the entirety of this game! See how far YOU will make it! Then you might say... "hey, usually characters are terrible and have a redeeming arc or quality?" I'll tell you right now. She wont. She even gets everything her way in the end with extra sugary pudding goodies on top. Yep. Note this a kinetic novel with choices, meaning YOU CAN'T change the ending (just the flavor text/Achievements). I wonder why... Hmm... Mysterious indeed. She even has the flat ass to say: "Do you even know what it's like that for this person? FOR ME?!" You damn hypocrite!!! Have you looked at your starving self in the mirror? Family? Completely loathes her mother and makes sure to tell her that "You tick me off!!!" and a load of other BS. IF and ONLY IF! There was a GOOD ENOUGH REASON FOR HER DEEP SEATED HATRED FOR HER MOTHER...! Then I would've been more than able to accept (or at least understand a bit) their already stupid conflict. Let's talk about the "drama" aspect. I will say this right away: no matter how HORRENDOUS a person is... I don't wish ill upon them. Unlike the MC, I don't lack compassion or brain cells for that matter, so I will not dignify and say that "yeah, what happened to her... She deserved it!" I went through it and I can relate. Was it actually dramatic? Good drama and such? You know what...? The MC's behavior/words overshadowed all of it. Really? Yes. Most of the time I just had to stop and shake my head, wondering when she will become better. Never got my wish. Drama was there...
But it's like this: the stupid "princess" got everyone else to help and resolve all the problems for her. She got three guys, if not more vying for her attention and she forsakes all her friends for one guy, who turns out to have a hidden secret (he's so not into her!). Then in the end, only the "bad guy" is punished and MC comes out with a clean, true love and feeling that she is now free from her burdens............
I just spoiled you the ending, but I highly doubt anyone would be surprised. Oh and I wont even go and count how many times the MC says one thing, only to turn around and do the exact thing she was complaining against. "MEN SUCK!!! Why they care for chests so much!?"... Seconds later. "Can he see my chest? Should've worn my push up bra!" Then this... "He so dreamy... WHAT?! He is looking at THAT BEEP?!... MEN ARE PIGS! I HATE THEM ALL!!!" WAH! Sighhhhhhhh.............. It is clear and obvious this wasn't for me. Even if you tell me "this is HS... Their mentality is different..." Hell, you don't think I know? I've been there. Done that. I actually had a friend, who I thought was a friend back then. She too, loved to use people, judge and was pretty much like the MC. You know what happened to her? Years later she was alone and had nobody to help her with anything. She lost her beauty too. Never had smarts. She started a blog, praying and writing for some poor and lonely soul to come and save her. I would've felt bad for her, but after the ways she used me and everything else she put everyone through? I had no pity for her. Same with this game. I have no pity for such intolerable characters. If they wish to be horrible, then they can continue to do so on their own. Until life gets them. They might have a happy victory/moment here and there, but later... It's going to be a hell of a ride. (The words are to be considered. Not a threat of any kind. I am well aware that these characters are fictional.)
Alice is a sophomore at her school who has had feelings for her childhood friend Mark for quite some time. However, when the school’s heartthrob begins to show an interest in her, Alice (for the most part), forgets all about that to the disappointment of all the other high school girls including her best friend who has harbored feelings for Raphael for almost ever. I had mixed feelings about this VN. On one hand, it attempt to portray realities that can often grace our high schools. People are mean and meanness was something that was often prevalent in every high school circle. However, it felt as if it was trying TOO hard to be authentic and with the occasional hypocrisy, it left a bitter taste at the end. Alice is NOT a very nice person. She is often combative and selfish towards her family and friends and while it is refreshing to have a character who, for once, is not the perfect image, it makes it difficult to reconcile that image to the mature well to do character at the end. The problem is that her lashing out at everyone happens relatively early and there is very little built-up of that tension. We start with a threatening phone call and then she just beings lashing out. She is mean to her mom, her best friend, sometimes to random students, and even her child-hood crush. Although we can make arguments that Alice acts in this way because she is dealing with an extremely difficult situation there really is no excuse for some of them. When she apologies to her friend it is mostly awkward and fails to address the main reason of why her friend was upset in the first place. The only side we see is Alice’s side. Consequently, when she argues with her mother there is no real reason for her rudeness. Yet, instead of showing growth, Alice “flips” the argument by telling us, the readers, how manipulative her mother is because it makes her feel bad being mean to her. There is nothing wrong with a protagonist having rough edges. It just has to make sense if those rough edges disappear by the VN’s end. It is a contrast seeing all the swearing and verbal attacks suddenly stop after discovering the identity of her cyber bully. Yet by the end, she is a mature and well-adjusted adult and any apologies she makes ends up being generic and barely touches on a personal level. It is hard to get into a VN when the characters are difficult to like. Sigh. I know some people will probably enjoy it, but unfortunately, I didn't. I will say that I hope the writers of the VN keep writing. They obviously have skill, but now they need to reach that next level.
Overview
In this story we follow the life of Alice, an unremarkable student other than for her position as a valuable member of the school volleyball team. For the last couple of years, Alice has had a crush on her long-time friend Mark, and she suspects he feels the same, but he never makes the move to ask her out; leaving her unsure of his feelings and intentions. Most of the girls in the school are infatuated with Raphael, the handsome and mysteriously alluring idol and member of the boys' volleyball team; including Alice's best friend Emily. As the story progresses, Alice is approached and asked out by Raphael, marking her as a target for jealous looks, back-biting and even threats of violence against her.
Graphics
There are a good amount of backgrounds included in the game, with some of the details outstanding considering the asking price. I was particularly impressed with the polished, reflective surface of the school gymnasium, though that was not alone in catching my eye. Sprites are typical anime style, and adequate-to-good. Raphael's fingers look a bit odd, but all other character details held up quite well.
Positives
- What struck me most of all is how well the writers have captured the attitudes, thoughts and actions of high-school teenagers. There will be times you feel annoyed with the MC, whether it be an obnoxious reaction to someone, or just her private thoughts. These moments may not be how we'd react, but they ring so true to the reality of life at that age. Well done! - There are 9 secondary characters in the story and every one of them has a personality developed well enough to be both individual and believable. - I don't know the nationality origin of the developers, but if this has been translated into English, what a pleasure it is to see that this localisation has included the characters' names. Such a rare treat. I do appreciate not having to do battle with names that are “alien” to me and difficult to get my head around. - There is only one ending to the story – at first glance you might consider this a negative, but as the story realises the nature of its protagonists so well, keeping it direct and focused has ensured that there are no forced alternatives which would weaken the credibility of their behaviour. This was the right decision. - All primary characters get a change of clothes!
Negatives
- The game offers narrative in both English and French (yes, this is a positive, but..) and when first opened, is presented with options in French, with the choice of language tucked away within the preferences menu. If there are language alternatives, this should be the very first thing the player sees, not be expected to go looking through a foreign language in order to find the option to change it. - The UI is straightforward and pleasant to look at, but has a couple of slips: the main one being that there is no backstep option – or if there is, then it is extremely well hidden. You can discover any missed dialogue from a history log, but this can only be accessed by going into the preferences menu first; so it is a two step process to find, and then return to where you were. Unnecessarily click-intensive. - The other UI slip is an odd one. If you are reading the story in French, then you might want to be bilingual, as the quick-access menu at the top of the screen remains in English. - My favourite beef: language quality. Ugh! In the English version, all errors are minor (you'll never have a problem understanding what is being said), but there are SO MANY OF THEM, especially in the first half of the game. Strangely, it improves later on. What is so frustrating is that the nature of the wealth of errors is such that it suggests the writer knows better, but didn't give it a thorough check before release. Typical examples of this are French spellings of character names appearing occasionally (Marc for Mark, Nathalie for Natalie, Raphaël for Raphael); tense and plural mismatches, and my particular fave: "She would be the perfect candidate to be Raphael's boyfriend, for sure!" Would she really? That's quite the achievement!
Verdict
Although this is a single-ending story, there are 39 choices to be had during gameplay, all of them providing entertaining alternative dialogue and/or leading you to achievements otherwise missable, so there is plenty to keep your mind active as you work your way through. Putting aside the text issues, the actual story and character creation is laudable. The writers have captured just how quickly and easily both romances and friendships can come and go during the high school years, and given us an MC who is likeable and annoying at the same time. Narrative flows nicely, and still manages to produce a surprise or two along the way. For the price being asked, I feel this game is worth every penny. I had a really good time playing through, and even found myself staying up half hour too late to try and push through to the resolution rather than risk not being able to return for a couple of days; which is always a sign of an engaging story. If you're interested in this one, don't put it on your wishlist for it to sit there forgotten about ad-infinitum. Just buy it. It's highly likely that you'll be happy with your purchase.
Note to developers: If English is your native language, please go over your script and make some corrections – they will be obvious. If not, try to find a native to give it a quick once-over. It will make a difference to readers' impressions. If I wasn't so severely over-committed, I'd help you myself. You did a great job with the story though. I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the future.
Note: I updated this review although it doesn't include screenshots since I didn't upload screenshots at the time I first wrote this review.
The competition for love begins. XD

Introduction
Game of Love is a visual novel developed and published by Golden Castle Studio. You take on the role of Alice, a high school sophomore on the school's volleyball team. Basically, Alice is living the "typical" high school life, dealing with obnoxious teachers, an overbearing mother, and a high school diva. However, that all changes one day when a member of the boys' volleyball team, Raphael, a junior, starts to take an interest in Alice. Alice ends up becoming popular, attracting the attention of lots of guys, including her childhood friend Mark, who had never taken an interest in Alice until Raphael started paying attention to her. However, she also ends up inciting envy and jealousy from other females, including her best friend Emily. On top of that, Alice starts getting threatening text messages. Can Alice handle all this newfound attention and not succumb to threats? I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, Game of Love is advertised as a kinetic novel and it pretty much is since you end up getting the same ending. However, many choices are presented throughout the story (which is a bit unusual in kinetic novels since they follow one story path from beginning to end). While some of the choices simply affect the flavor of the text, others are tied to Steam achievements. There are a few CGs as well as a few music tracks and sound effects. However, at the time of this review, no Steam trading cards are available and Steam achievements won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game."
Review
Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. Upon first opening the game, I immediately noticed that the default language is French even though I have English as my default language. I had to go into the game's preferences area to change the language to English. Aside from that, I'll talk about the story. I was interested in this visual novel because I liked the story premise - the idea of an ordinary high school student becoming popular and then having to deal with the problems associated with it. However, as I got into the story, I found certain aspects which personally irked me. First off, I found Alice to be kind of annoying as the main character. I believe she was depicted to be the typical high school teenager, but I didn't like how she would swear a lot. (I know it's normal to swear at times but not to the extent that Alice does. lol) Also, she has a terrible relationship with her mother, but I feel like the story doesn't really justify Alice being mean to her. Yes, the mother is overbearing and perhaps worries too much about Alice, but I don't think that justifies Alice yelling at her mother and accusing her and such. (On this point, I kind of know what I'm talking about since I don't have a good relationship with my mother. However, I have very justifiable reasons, way more than someone being annoying.) Typically, I like empathizing with main characters, but Alice was a bit of a difficult pill to swallow, even when she was later bullied and such. As to the rest of the characters, I found most of them to be ok or to my liking. I'd say that Jessica, the popular, beautiful diva, was my favorite because it turns out
that she's very much misunderstood
. On the story itself, it's your typical high school drama story and then some. I felt that the drama was a bit overdone at times although I liked how the writer tackled the issues of bullying, same sex relationships, etc. The only complaint I have about the story is
that after Alice finds out the true culprit behind the threatening texts, she never gets things resolved with the person whom she accused. It's like Alice and the accused were both too proud to talk to the other about what happened and try to work things out
. On the writing, I felt that it was paced ok. I noticed a couple of typos as well as a few grammatical errors that bothered me as an editor. The errors are probably a result of the translation from French to English. On the art style, it's ok. It's not the most polished and I found a couple of sprites a little rough-looking. However, the backgrounds were fine although the art is nothing spectacular. On the soundtrack, like the art, it's ok although nothing outstanding. With one track, it sounded way too dramatic to me. I know the story is supposed to depict high school drama and perhaps it's just my personal preference, but I felt like it was a bit overdone. Then again, I tend to like a bit more realism when it comes to reading stories.
Conclusion
Overall, would I recommend Game of Love? For Golden Castle Studio's debut visual novel, I think it's a fine visual novel. It has its flaws, but generally, I'd say that I enjoyed it. The developers teased that another chapter is planned, so I hope that it'll improve upon the flaws of this chapter. For the asking price, I'd say it's worth getting, as it took me about 5 hours to get all of the achievements and CGs. However, you can wait for a sale to pick it up then. ^^ On an additional note, I've posted an achievement guide here, so if you're struggling to get those one or two pesky achievements, hopefully, it'll help. Les choix n'ont pas de réel impact . Le jeu nous fait sauter de prétendants en prétendants pour au final ne pas nous laisser choisir avec lequel nous voulons finir. La qualité des dessins varie grandement dans certaines scènes
The MC is so incredibly judgmental and horrible that I can't play the game. I want to grab the girl and shake some sense into her. I wouldn't recommend this game.
Holy balls, This is a dumpsterfire. It's got the illusion of choice, it's got the worst MC I've played yet, it's got some poor English translations, and there's only 2 language options (French and English). There's so few actual choices for the player to make, that it really doesn't matter anyway. I'm getting a refund. What a waste of time.
I don't particular mind that the main character is a complete Uh b-- as long as there is character development which there isn't. I ended up skipping through it. It's a simple VN which i had zero expections going into and the price is so cheap it's not a huge loss or anything though.
