I have put so many hours into this game over the last decade+. While it's definitely more suited to being a mobile game, the steam version has somehow managed to suck yet more hours out of me. It's very simple but the dopamine from seeing the little icons flow into your game is very real. And attaining that elusive 40/40 review score is a fun little challenge. Definitely worth trying for those with time to kill while on public transportation.
played this a lot on my phone years ago
Since I was a child, I've always loved Kairosoft games, though back then I played pirated versions on my phone. Now that I finally have time to play, I took advantage of this anniversary sale and directly purchased the first and second bundles of the Kairosoft collection. It's not that I don't like the third and fourth bundles, or that they aren't good enough—it's simply that I'm still a student and not financially independent, so I could only buy as many as I could afford, in the order they were released. I plan to complete them one by one according to my own preference, and write some simple reviews for fellow Kairosoft fans. As the first title in the first bundle, Game Dev Story has a fairly straightforward premise: you play as the boss of a game company, managing your business with the goal of winning the Game of the Year award. The core gameplay loop is about continuously developing new games. You can choose from successive generations of consoles (which is quite interesting, as it gives you a sense of console evolution). After selecting a game genre, each title is scored across four dimensions—writing, programming, graphics, and music—and these scores depend on your staff's corresponding attributes. So the loop is clear: develop games → sell them to earn money and skill points → train your staff → then use better staff to create higher-quality games. However, this loop starts to feel tedious after about three hours. There isn't much variety in what you can do—you're mostly just developing new games over and over, and the popular genres remain largely the same. Later on, after unlocking hardware engineers, you can develop your own console, reaping both game sales and licensing revenue. Eventually, by repeatedly changing jobs and maxing out all classes, you unlock the hidden "Hacker" class. Along the way, you gradually recruit the legendary eight-member team. Unfortunately, the stat gaps between characters are quite noticeable—my starting character, whom I trained extensively and even maxed out as a Hacker, can still be easily surpassed by Kairo-kun. To win Game of the Year, you need all four stats to reach 800+, which is pretty demanding. It's also wise to invest heavily in promotion and marketing. It's worth noting that in the Chinese localization, many game studios and game titles are clearly parodies of real ones, which will bring a knowing smile to veteran players.
